Abstract Purposes: Congenital biliary dilatation (CBD) is a high-risk factor for biliary tract cancer (BTC). We previously reported the potential for carcinogenesis in the biliary epithelium of patients with CBD. In this study, we investigated potential carcinogenetic pathways, focusing on the DNA damage repair response, in children with CBD and compared the findings with those in adults.
Methods: We enrolled 6 children with CBD and 10 adults with CBD without BTC who underwent extrahepatic bile duct resections, plus 4 control patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for non-biliary cancer. Levels of phosphorylated histone H2AX (γH2AX), MRE11, and Ku-70 in the biliary tract epithelium were evaluated by immunohistochemistry.
Results: The levels of γH2AX, MRE11, and Ku-70 were significantly higher in the gallbladder epithelium and bile duct epithelium of both children and adults than in controls.
Conclusions: Children and adults with CBD might develop BTC via the DNA damage repair pathway, as evidenced by increased γH2AX, MRE11, and Ku-70 expression.

Abstract Purposes: We use the laparoscopic percutaneous extraperitoneal closure (LPEC) method as the standard procedure for pediatric inguinal hernia. Despite judging there to be no contralateral patent processus vaginalis (PPV) at the time of the first LPEC, we experienced five cases in which metachronous contralateral inguinal hernia (MCH) developed, so we report the characteristics, including the predictors.
Methods: For pediatric inguinal hernia, the LPEC method was used in 1277 cases from 2005 to 2019 in our department. Of these, 374 patients underwent unilateral LPEC, and we compared the 5 patients with MCH onset and the 369 without MCH onset. The items to be examined were the gender, age, presence of a low birth weight, initial-onset side, and contralateral internal inguinal ring classification.
Results: There was no significant difference in the gender, age, initial-onset side, or contralateral internal inguinal ring classification between the two groups. Low-birth-weight infants were significantly more common among those with MCH than among those without MCH.
Conclusions: The only predictor of a contralateral onset after LPEC for pediatric inguinal hernia was a low birth weight. Therefore, for the above-mentioned unilateral LPEC cases, the possibility of a contralateral onset after LPEC due to acquired factors rather than congenital factors should be considered.

Abstract Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare disease with a poor prognosis, which essentially needs an early diagnosis because surgery is the only hope of a cure. On the other hand, primary aldosteronism (PA) is an overproduction of aldosterone from the adrenal glands and is known as one of the most common causes of secondary hypertension and hypokalemia. It is mostly a benign disease. ACC accompanied by PA is extremely rare, which can result in delayed diagnosis and clinical pitfalls. A 56-year-old woman was diagnosed with PA. Mild, symptomatic PA was clinically diagnosed as a right-sided aldosterone-producing adenoma (APA) with adrenal tumor using adrenal vein sampling (AVS). The tumor imaging findings showed abnormalities on computed tomography (CT) in terms of size and attenuation value compared with typical benign adenomas. Twelve months later, the tumor was confirmed to be an ACC with cortisol hypersecretion. The resected ACC specimen did not clearly show positive findings for CYP11B1 or CYP11B2, and disorganized steroid production was suspected. However, the prevalence and clinical characteristics of adrenocortical carcinomas with disorganized steroid production remain unclear. Steroidogenic enzyme immunostaining analysis is important not only for the diagnosis of adrenal adenoma but also for a better understanding of the clinical course of hormone-producing ACC.

Abstract Background/aim: The glucocorticoids (GCs)-glucocorticoid receptor (GR)-SGK1-NDRG1 pathway plays an important role in the response of tumor cells to various stresses including chemotherapy. In many solid tumors, the GCs-GR pathway acts as a tumor suppressor; however, its function varies depending on the type of cancer. This study investigated the relationship between the GR-SGK1-NDRG1 pathway and lung adenocarcinoma recurrence and overall survival.
Materials and methods: Lung adenocarcinoma cases (n=121, Stage I-III) were included. Immunohistochemistry for GR, N-myc downstream regulated gene 1 (NDRG-1), serum and glucocorticoid-induced protein kinase 1 (SGK-1), Ki-67, and programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) was performed to examine their relationship with clinicopathological features, recurrence, and prognosis.
Results: SGK-1 and NDRG-1 were significant prognostic factors. Recurren ce was more likely in the SGK-1, NDRG-1, and Ki-67 high/positive groups.
Conclusion: The GR-SGK1-NDRG1 pathway may be involved in the recurrence and prognosis of lung adenocarcinoma.

Abstract Ctenolepisma calvum (Ritter, 1910) (Zygentoma: Lepismatidae) is a primitive wingless insect that causes damage to paper, and it is regarded as a pest of collections in museums, archives, and libraries. This species was recently discovered in Japan for the first time and may have already spread over large areas of Japan, but, currently, no information is available on the biological characteristics of C. calvum in Japan. In this study, we observed the processes of development and reproduction of C. calvum found in Japan at room temperature. Oviposition was observed from April to November, with a peak in early June. The average egg period was 56.9 days at average temperatures above 24.0 °C, and was 72.4 days at average temperatures below 24.0 °C. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd instars lasted 4.7 days, 13.2 days, and 26.1 days on average, respectively, at average temperatures above 22.0 °C. Average instar periods were 23–28 days in 4th–7th instars and tended to increase in later instars. Instar periods also increased when the average temperature was 22.0 °C or lower. In individual rearing, the longest-living individual lived for approximately two years, up to the 15th instar. The head width grew at an approximate ratio of 1.1 per molt. First oviposition occurred at the 10th or 11th instar. Individually observed females oviposited once or twice a year, laying 6–16 eggs at one time, but females at least two years old laid 78.2 eggs per year on average in a mass-culture cage. Through this study, only females were found, and the mature females produced their progenies parthenogenetically.

Abstract This study evaluated the bonding performance of coronal dentin disks, designed for biological restoration, and CAD/CAM resin composite disks when bonded to flat dentin surfaces using dual-cure resin cements, with and without a resin-coating (RC) technique. Three distinct groups were established within the non-RC group, each using one of the two types of resin cements in a self-adhesive mode: one-step self-etch adhesive (1-SEA) without light-cure, 1-SEA with light-cure, and a separate group using an alternate cement. Within the RC group, a subgroup was established for each cement. The microtensile bond strength (μTBS) of the disk-dentin beam was tested after 0 and 10,000 thermocycles in a 5°C/55°C. No significant μTBS difference was observed among the non-RC groups. However, when using RC, the μTBSs of coronal dentin disks significantly exceeded those of CAD/CAM resin composite disks. Thermocycle aging did not affect μTBS in any of the bonding methods, except in self-adhesive mode.
