(Abstract. During the months of February, May, August and October 2014, the water quality of the San Juan River was assessed. To this aim, six sampling points were established, where water samples and macroinvertebrates for physical-chemical and hydrobiological analysis were collected. Three biotic indexes were applied and one modified: EPT (Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, Trichoptera), BMWP / Col (Biological Monitoring Working Party) and ASPT (Average Score per Taxon) based on the captured communities of aquatic macroinvertebrates. The results of the physical-chemical variables and biotic indixes indicate that E1 and E2 stations are those with lower degree of contamination, other stations considerably decreased water quality due to economic activities around, and the short distance with the urban municipality of Andes. Of the three indexes analyzed, modified and adapted, ASPT ...

Abstract: Monitoring of distribution and fractionation of mercury (Hg) from within the San Juan River Basin ... in sediment samples was 0.405±0.074 mg/Kg and showed a uniform Hg distribution along the San Juan River Basin ...

Abstract Monitoring of distribution and fractionation of mercury (Hg) from within the San Juan River Basin that provides water for the Metropolitan Area of Monterrey, Mexico (MAM), was performed. The purpose of this work was to characterize the risk of Hg exposure to human populations that reside in communities nearby the area. Total Hg was quantified from water and surface sediments (0-10 cm) collected from 11 locations during the summer season of 2006. The analysis of Hg was carried out by Cold Vapor Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (CVAAS). Simultaneously, some relevant physical and chemical parameters were analyzed in water samples and correlated to Hg concentrations to trace the fate of Hg in the watershed. In the river water samples, Hg levels were in the range from 0.17 to 1.14 |ig/L. The mean concentration level of Hg in sediment samples was 0.405±0.074 mg/Kg and showed a uniform Hg distribution along the San Juan River Basin, conversely, the fractionation studies showed that chemical speciation plays an important role in stability and low mobility.

Abstract This paper presents a novel analytical model for predicting the behavior of composite materials under three- and four-point bending tests and large deformations. The model adapts a previous isotropic formulation to account for anisotropic behavior and contact interaction. The model was validated with experimental data reported in the literature using hybrid composite materials and quasi-isotropic laminates, obtaining accurate predictions of global reaction loads, deformation, and strain measurements. Moreover, 3D shell and 2D plane strain finite element models were developed to verify the analytical model and to study the effects of large deformations on the non-linear response of composite beams. It was found that before the first drop in the load-deflection curve, most of the non-linear behavior of the investigated materials is mainly due to geometrical effects and not to damage. Finally, the implications of geometric non-linearities in the ASTM D6272 standard stress calculations were discussed, and some limitations were highlighted.
