Abstract Sapote mamey is a tropical tree native from Mexico and Central America that shows potential as an alternative commercial crop for tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Its fruit is a good source of nutrients and it is highly appreciated in Mexico and countries of Central and South America because of its pleasant and sweet flavour and the bright deep orange-red colour of the pulp. A clear demand for the fruit exists in these countries and has been recently reported in other countries such as Australia, Israel, Philippines and Spain. This paper reviews information on postharvest biology and technology of sapote mamey fruit published by several authors in the past 60 years and presents experimental data obtained in the last 10 years by our research group. Topics deal with postharvest handling and physiology; changes of quality attributes during ripening such as colour, total soluble solids, firmness, water content, sugars and carotenoids; diseases, insects and disorders during storage; and responses to low temperatures. The effect of controlled and modified atmospheres on the postharvest life and quality of sapote mamey is also discussed. Other postharvest treatments and technologies that have been evaluated on this fruit are also revised, including the use of ethrel, the application of the ethylene action inhibitor 1-methylcyclopropane and the effect of heat treatments for quarantine purposes and waxing to extend the storage life. Since the preservation and exchange of native material is essential for breeding studies and for making new improved varieties available for commercial production, the creation of a bank of germplasm is an idea also presented in the paper. We believe this review will serve as a useful reference for those studying and investigating postharvest aspects of sapote mamey fruit. Hopefully, it will also encourage future research to preserve the quality, minimize postharvest loses and increase the demand for this pleasant and exotic fruit.

    una mirada sobre lo imaginario

    2023  Volume 2

Abstract The olfactory bulb is involved early in the pathophysiology of Parkinson's disease (PD), which is consistent with the early onset of olfactory dysfunction. Identifying the molecular mechanisms through which PD affects the olfactory bulb could lead to a better understanding of the pathophysiology and etiology of olfactory dysfunction in PD. We specifically aimed to assess gene expression changes, affected pathways and co-expression network by whole transcriptomic profiling of the olfactory bulb in subjects with clinicopathologically defined PD. Bulk RNA sequencing was performed on frozen human olfactory bulbs of 20 PD and 20 controls without dementia or any other neurodegenerative disorder, from the Arizona Study of Aging and Neurodegenerative disorders and the Brain and Body Donation Program. Differential expression analysis (19 PD vs 19 controls) revealed 2164 significantly differentially expressed genes (1090 upregulated and 1074 downregulated) in PD. Pathways enriched in downregulated genes included oxidative phosphorylation, olfactory transduction, metabolic pathways, and neurotransmitters synapses while immune and inflammatory responses as well as cellular death related pathways were enriched within upregulated genes. An overrepresentation of microglial and astrocyte-related genes was observed amongst upregulated genes, and excitatory neuron-related genes were overrepresented amongst downregulated genes. Co-expression network analysis revealed significant modules highly correlated with PD and olfactory dysfunction that were found to be involved in the MAPK signaling pathway, cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, cholinergic synapse, and metabolic pathways. LAIR1 (leukocyte associated immunoglobulin like receptor 1) and PPARA (peroxisome proliferator activated receptor alpha) were identified as hub genes with a high discriminative power between PD and controls reinforcing an important role of neuroinflammation in the olfactory bulb of PD subjects. Olfactory identification test score positively correlated with expression of genes coding for G-coupled protein, glutamatergic, GABAergic, and cholinergic receptor proteins and negatively correlated with genes for proteins expressed in glial olfactory ensheathing cells. In conclusion, this study reveals gene alterations associated with neuroinflammation, neurotransmitter dysfunction, and disruptions of factors involved in the initiation of olfactory transduction signaling that may be involved in PD-related olfactory dysfunction.

Abstract: ... E), fatty atrophy (A), retraction (R), and location (L), conforming to the acronym "PEARL ...

Abstract Objective: The ISAKOS Shoulder Committee developed a new comprehensive classification system aimed to describe all rotator cuff tears. The five characteristics of the tears included are pattern (P), extension (E), fatty atrophy (A), retraction (R), and location (L), conforming to the acronym "PEARL." The objective of this study is to assess if the ISAKOS Rotator Cuff Tear Classification System is reliable by measuring the intraobserver and interobserver multirater reliability.
Methods: Arthroscopic videos of 36 rotator cuff tears, including tears of varying sizes and configurations, were evaluated twice by four surgeons from different continents blinded to tear type. Intraobserver and interobserver reliability was measured using multirater and intraobserver Kappa coefficients.
Results: Intraobserver reliability: An almost perfect agreement for "location" (κ = 0.98), substantial agreement for "extension" (κ = 0.73) were obtained for mean intrarater kappa, lower κ agreement for "pattern" (κ = 0.58), and relatively high agreement of 0.79 for "retraction." Every characteristic of "location" had an almost perfect agreement among the surgeons (κ = 0.91). Intrarrater reliability: In the partial-thickness posterosuperior tears "location," there was good agreement in tears involving less than 50% of the tendon (κ = 0.74) and moderate in those deeper than 50% of the tendon thickness (κ = 0.58). "Extension" in full-thickness posterosuperior RCT achieved moderate agreement. Within the anterior subscapularis tears, we have a substantial agreement in Lafosse´s Type 1 (κ = 0.73), moderate in Types 2 and 3 (κ = 0.45 and κ = 0.46) and slight agreement in Type 4 (κ = 0.06). The overall kappa summarizing all categories indicated moderate agreement (κ = 0.52). The articular pattern in the partial-thickness posterosuperior RCT "location" had a perfect kappa of 1, while the bursal pattern showed an almost complete agreement (κ = 0.87). In the full-thickness posterosuperior RCTs, we observed fair agreement in C, U, and reverse L configurations and slight agreement in L pattern (κ = 0.18). The overall kappa is 0.44 with a confidence interval of 0.41-0.47. There was substantial agreement in every category and the overall kappa for "retraction" (k = 0.70).
Conclusion: ISAKOS rotator cuff tear classification system provides sufficient interobserver reliability for communicating among surgeons and for pooling of data from clinical studies.

Abstract In this paper we evaluate different models and constraints to define strategic planning approaches. In addition, we analyze the best models to meet the expectations generated by the organization. A forest company situated in the province of Misiones, Argentina, provided the data. Hence, forest growth was simulated and, ultimately, optimized planning was used to evaluate different scenarios with 50-year horizon. The best results to stabilize log production were obtained when the harvest is relaxed in ±2 years. Relaxing the clear-cut age leads to a better balance in planting, thinning (1, 2, 3 and 4) and clear felling operations. We found that when maximizing the economic benefit, the NPV is slightly higher, however, this is not significant. In this sense, the planner chooses an economic or volumetric objective function. Furthermore, we demonstrated that model 1 presented better results than model 2 because it manages to stabilize production in the planning horizon. The results allow forest companies to see the implication of choosing the model for strategic planning.

Abstract Antepartum fetal surveillance (AFS) is essential for pregnant women with diabetes to mitigate the risk of stillbirth. However, there is still no universal consensus on the optimal testing method, testing frequency, and delivery timing. This review aims to comprehensively analyze the evidence concerning AFS and the most advantageous timing for delivery in both gestational and pregestational diabetes mellitus cases. This review's methodology involved an extensive literature search encompassing international diabetes guidelines and scientific databases, including PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Scopus. The review process meticulously identified and utilized pertinent articles for analysis. Within the scope of this review, a thorough examination revealed five prominent international guidelines predominantly addressing gestational diabetes. These guidelines discuss the utility and timing of fetal well-being assessments and recommendations for optimal pregnancy resolution timing. However, the scarcity of clinical trials directly focused on this subject led to a reliance on observational studies as the basis for most recommendations. Glucose control, maternal comorbidities, and the medical management received are crucial in making decisions regarding AFS and determining the appropriate delivery timing.
