Abstract Introduction: Blended learning seems to be an effective teaching concept in oral radiology. During the COVID-19 pandemic, blended learning shifted towards online-only learning. The aim of the present study was to compare the effectiveness of pandemic online-only and pre-pandemic blended learning in three consecutive oral radiology courses (C1, C2 and C3) and to examine whether additional video-based e-learning modules (VBLMs) had a positive impact on undergraduate students' performance during pandemic semesters.
Materials and methods: Data from 205 undergraduate dental students participating either in a blended learning or an online-only learning concept were analysed. Pre-pandemic blended learning comprised face-to-face seminars and access to an oral radiology platform (ORP). Pandemic online-only learning comprised online seminars, access to the ORP and additional VBLMs (two VBLMs for C1, four VBLMs for C2 and six VBLMs for C3). Through standardised e-exams at the beginning and end of each semester, performance in final exams and knowledge gain were compared between the two groups.
Results: No significant differences in scores in final exams (p = .11) and knowledge gain (p = .18) were found when comparing the pre-pandemic and pandemic groups. On course level, however, students receiving a lower number of VBLMs performed significantly worse in final exams (C1: p < .01, C2: p = .02) and showed inferior knowledge gain (C2: p < .01) during the pandemic.
Conclusions: Within the limitations of the study, the present investigation confirmed that pandemic online-only learning involving VBLMs might be as effective as pre-pandemic blended learning.

Abstract The annual Society for Neuroscience (SfN) meeting yields significant, measurable impacts that conflict with the environmental commitment of the Society and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recommendations to address the climate emergency (IPCC, 2018). We used 12,761 presenters' origins, two online carbon calculators, and benchmark values to estimate 2018 meeting-related travel, event venue operations, and hotel accommodation emissions. Presenters' conference travel resulted in between 17,298 and 8690 tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide (t CO

Abstract Purpose/objectives: Due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, undergraduate education shifted towards online-only formats from April 2020 until July 2021. Previous research indicated a negative effect on students' competence development, and it remains unclear whether blended learning concepts could provide compensation. Therefore, the present study aimed to compare pre- to post-pandemic students' performance in standardized baseline (BL) and final exams (FE), as well as the associated knowledge gain (KG) in three consecutive undergraduate blended learning-based oral radiology courses (C1-3).
Methods: Ninety-four students participated during two pre-pandemic semesters (October 17-July 18), and ninety-eight students during two post-pandemic semesters (October 21-July 22). Before the pandemic, conventional face-to-face lectures were combined with an oral radiology platform. Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, additional video-based e-learning modules were adopted from the pandemic online-only curriculum. In each semester, skills and KG were assessed by conducting standardized BL and FE. Students' performance in BL, FE, and the associated KG during pre-pandemic semesters was compared to post-pandemic semesters.
Results: In post-pandemic courses, students showed significantly lower BL scores, whereas KG was significantly higher in post- compared to pre-pandemic semesters (27.42% vs. 10.64%, p < 0.001, respectively). FE scores in C1 significantly improved from pre- to post-pandemic semesters.
Conclusions: Within the limitations of our study, the lower BL scores confirmed the negative effect of the pandemic on competence development. Blended learning concepts seem to compensate for this effect and enable students to return to pre-pandemic levels. Future studies are needed to assess the additional impact of video-based e-learning modules.

Abstract Background: Adolescents and young adults aged 15-24 years are disproportionately affected by unnatural deaths, including accidents, suicide and interpersonal violence for which alcohol is a leading risk factor. We aimed to explore the extent of and circumstances surrounding alcohol-related deaths in young people aged 15-24 years and whether socioeconomic background and ethnicity differ in those who died due to alcohol-related causes as compared to the background population.
Methods: All deaths of 15-24-year-olds occurring in Denmark from 2010 to 2019 were investigated. We manually reviewed death certificates containing information on circumstances, results from autopsies and blood tests, and statements from witnesses. Relevant information published in the media (most often newspaper articles) was included. Our main outcome measures were alcohol-related death and manner of death (accidents (transport accidents, drownings, falls, poisonings), suicide and violence). Further, we designed a population-based case-control study including 10 age- and sex-matched controls per case to test whether there was a socioeconomic gradient in alcohol-related deaths. We used parents' educational level and employment status to define socioeconomic position. Immigration status was used to assess ethnicity.
Findings: Over the 10-year period, 1783 deaths occurred among 15-24-year-olds. Of those, 1067 (60%) were due to unnatural causes, corresponding to a mortality rate of 14.8 (95% confidence interval: 13.9-15.7) per 100,000. Twelve percent of unnatural deaths (n = 125) were alcohol related, corresponding to a rate of 1.7 (1.4-2.0) per 100,000, and were higher in males (2.9 [2.3-3.4]) than in females (0.6 [0.3-0.8]); thus, males accounted for 105 (84%) of alcohol-related deaths. The majority of alcohol-related deaths occurred on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays (n = 77, 62%). Accidents accounted for 82% (n = 102) of alcohol-related deaths, followed by suicide (n = 19, 15%) and interpersonal violence (n = 4, 3%). Of all fatal accidents, 102 of 636 (16%) were alcohol related. Of all deaths caused by drownings and falls, 14 of 26 (54%) and 10 of 25 (40%), respectively, were alcohol related. Alcohol-related drownings most often occurred while the deceased was alone, whereas alcohol-related falls most often occurred in relation to parties, involving falls from a window or balcony. Those who died from alcohol-related causes more often had parents with a short education or who were unemployed, as compared to the general population. For example, odds ratios were 3.9 (2.2-7.0) and 1.8 (1.2-2.9) for having parents with short and medium as compared to long educations. The odds ratio for being of Danish origin was 4.0 (1.7-9.5) compared to being first- or second-generation immigrants.
Interpretation: In 15-24-year-olds, alcohol-related deaths accounted for a substantial proportion of all unnatural deaths. There was substantial socioeconomic inequality in alcohol-related deaths, as has repeatedly been shown for chronic alcohol-related mortality in older adults.

Abstract Introduction: Thyroid diseases are very common and rarely life-threatening. One of the main therapeutic goals is an improvement in quality of life, making it important to measure in clinical and research settings. The aim of this systematic review is to provide an overview of the currently available thyroid-specific quality of life questionnaires with regard to their validation quality in order to make recommendations for clinical use with a special focus on German questionnaires.
Methods: A systematic literature search was performed in Pubmed, Google Scholar and the Cochrane Library. A total of 904 studies were identified. After excluding duplicates, non-English- or German-language texts, full texts that were not freely available and studies with irrelevant content, 64 studies reporting on 16 different questionnaires were included in the analysis.
Results: Four questionnaires concerned benign thyroid diseases (ThyPRO, ThyPRO-39, Thy-R-HRQoL and Thy-D-QOL), six malignant thyroid diseases (THYCA-QoL, ThyCa-HRLQOL, EORTC-Thy34, MADSI-Thy, QOL-Thyroid and ThyCAT), and six endocrine orbitopathy (GO-QOL, GO-QLS, TED-QOL, STED-QOL, TAO-QoL and Ox-TED). Only five questionnaires were at least developed, if not validated, in German, and five were developed in more than two languages.
Conclusions: ThyPRO and the ThyPRO-39 are the best-evaluated questionnaires for benign thyroid diseases. Alternatively, in hypothyroid patients, the adequately validated Thy-D-QoL can be used. For malignant thyroid diseases, the choice should be made individually, as all six questionnaires (THYCA-QoL, ThyCA-HRQOL, EORTC-Thy34, MDASI-Thy, QOL-Thyroid and ThyCAT) have different strengths and weaknesses. The GO-QOL is the best-validated questionnaire in endocrine orbitopathy. However, the TED-QOL is also suitable as a short-screening questionnaire for these patients.
