Abstract Cellulose succinates (CSs) having degrees of substitution (DSs) ranging from 0.78 to 2.77 were successfully obtained by reacting cellulose with succinic anhydride (SA) in dimethyl sulfoxide at room temperature using a small amount of inexpensive solid potassium carbonate as a catalyst. Interestingly, CSs with higher DS values were obtained with a much smaller amount of catalyst than previously reported. Moreover, it is possible to control the DS by tailoring the reaction time and mass ratio of cellulose/SA. The hydroxyl groups at the C-6, C-2, and C-3 positions were the main esterification positions. In this process, most of the raw materials are either incorporated into the product or are recoverable. The E-factor, which reflects the sustainability of a given process, was demonstrated to be reduced by 93% by recovering the raw materials.

Abstract Ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T) is a rare devastating hereditary condition, which affects multiple organ systems including cerebellar motor function as well as DNA repair, resulting in a higher incidence of cancer and immunodeficiency. The genetic defect in A-T lies in ATM kinase, which is activated by DNA damage and regulates a plethora of substrates including the p53 tumor suppressor. We have organized an international meeting "The 19th Ataxia-Telangiectasia Workshop 2023 (ATW2023)" with support from the Molecular Biology Society of Japan (MBSJ) and other funders. Here, we report that ATW2023 was successfully held in Kyoto from March 2nd to 5th, 2023 with more than 150 participants traveling from all over the world, despite the still smoldering COVID-19 pandemic. In this meeting report, we will briefly describe the highlights of the meeting and would like to express our gratitude to the MBSJ for the financial support.

Abstract Current research on stem cells and regenerative medicine indicates new perspectives on the relationship between differentiation and gene information. Induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells need the artificial gene expression of the somatic cell, which is related to initialization. Paradoxically, that means that cell differentiation depends on almost all the gene information stored precisely in the nucleus of a somatic cell, plus the transformation of gene expression. Our research team tried to identify the culture conditions in the transdifferentiation of human leiomyoma cells, closely similar to the early embryonal stage, composed of various factors (hypoxia, non-serum, and regulation of cell adhesion molecules such as Wnt/β-catenin signaling). As a result, inhibition of Wnt/β-catenin signaling under serum starvation and hypoxia induces adipocytic transdifferentiation in human leiomyoma cells. Here we explain this unique culture system, referring to the components of intracellular mechanisms and the extracellular microenvironment in embryo development.

Abstract Background: Among the various anomalies of the biliary system, a double common bile duct with ectopic drainage in the stomach is rare. Furthermore, ectopic bile ducts are extremely rare in gastric cancers.
Case presentation: A 67-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with gastric cancer and ectopic left extrahepatic bile duct drainage in the stomach. Pre-operative testing revealed no communication between the intrahepatic bile ducts. Distal gastrectomy and bile duct jejunostomy were performed. The post-operative course was uneventful, and the patient did not exhibit recurrence for 39 mo.
Conclusions: Although it is uncertain whether sustained bile exposure from an ectopic bile duct is related to gastric cancer, short-term follow-up might be necessary because of the possibility of gastric cancer.
