    Abstract Drought is the most destructive abiotic stress and negatively affects crop growth and productivity. Modern breeding efforts have produced numerous cultivars with distinct genetic traits that improve crop growth and drought stress tolerance. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) can enhance drought tolerance in soybean plants by directly providing nutrients to plants, promoting photosynthesis, or influencing interspecific plant interactions in natural communities. However, the interactions between AMF and wild and transgenic soybean genotypes remain unclear. Therefore, in the present study, we evaluated the effect of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on the growth performance of drought-stressed transgenic soybean lines (ZXOE-11 and ZXOE-13) overexpressing GmSPL9d gene and their wild soybean Tianlong 1 (TL1) at the seedling stage (45 d after sowing). The results showed that colonization of wild and transgenic soybean with Rhizophagus irregularis significantly decreased the adverse effects of drought on plant growth. AMF inoculation significantly increased plant biomass, root activity, chlorophyll metabolism, photosynthesis, and chlorophyll fluorescence in wild-type and transgenic plants under both control and drought stress conditions. Drought causes the production of ROS, such as hydrogen peroxide, which enhances MDA, thereby decreasing the membrane stability index (MSI). However, AMF-inoculated plants exhibited decreased ROS accumulation and increased MSI. Moreover, AMF treatment significantly improved osmolyte, nitrogen, and nitrate reductase activity under control and drought conditions, which increased the relative water content. Furthermore, AMF treatment enhanced the antioxidant systems of drought-stressed plants by increasing the activities of peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase. AMF improved the growth performance, photosynthesis, and antioxidant activity of transgenic plants under drought stress conditions. The present findings indicate that the AMF contribution to soybean seedling drought tolerance was more significant for the transgenic plants than for the wild plants under drought conditions. The current findings emphasize the possibility of growth and photosynthetic variation in the degree of AMF-associated drought resistance in soybean plants. Our findings suggest that future crop breeding challenges include developing cultivars for sustainable production and maximizing crop cultivar and fungal species (AMF) combinations in drought-stressed regions.

    Abstract Older adults with cognitive impairment often face difficulties with comprehension and communication, which can impact other cognitive processes such as decision-making. This scoping review investigates how visual methods can support older adults with cognitive impairment. The review involved querying four databases. From these databases, eleven articles fit inclusion criteria. This paper examines the purposes, use contexts, types, and effectiveness of the visual methods described in each study. The two major use contexts were elicitation of thoughts, feelings, and preferences in everyday life and health/healthcare related uses. Studies that used visual methods for eliciting preferences generally employed static visualizations. Health-related contexts employed more complex and interactive visualizations. Three studies used visual tools to support older adults in understanding; six, communication; and three, decision-making. None addressed all three outcomes of interest. This study provides recommendations and future directions for visual communication research with older adults with cognitive impairment.

    Abstract Background: Although postoperative follow-up after aortic surgery is recommended by guidelines, its clinical utility is not well documented. We hypothesized that structured follow-up imaging by an aortic program would improve outcomes. We then documented radiologic findings on asymptomatic postoperative imaging.
    Methods: All patients who survived to discharge after open thoracic aortic surgery between January 2017 and July 2021 were included, excluding endocarditis. Patients who followed at our center and received scheduled imaging were compared with patients who did not. Survival was analyzed by the method of Kaplan-Meier, and reintervention was assessed using the Fine-Gray subhazard function. Routine imaging was reviewed for aortic growth, pseudoaneurysm, and perigraft density.
    Results: After aortic surgery, the cumulative incidence of follow-up was 38.6% at 3 years postoperatively. Patients with follow-up were more likely to have a dissection and fewer comorbidities but were similar in regards to socioeconomic factors and distance to hospital. After matching and accounting for immortal time bias, patients with follow-up had a greater reintervention rate (26.0% vs 9.0%) with similar survival (98.7% vs 95.2%, P = .110) at 4 years. The cumulative incidence of pseudoaneurysm, significant perigraft density, and growth ≥3 mm/year on routine imaging was 49.7% at 3 years.
    Conclusions: Implementation of structured follow-up imaging by an aortic program resulted in low clinical compliance. Follow-up was associated with increased rates of aortic reintervention. Clinically relevant radiologic findings were common on asymptomatic imaging and increased throughout 5-year follow-up rather than plateauing in the early postoperative period.

    Abstract MALAT1, one of the few highly conserved nuclear long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs), is abundantly expressed in normal tissues. Previously, targeted inactivation and genetic rescue experiments identified MALAT1 as a suppressor of breast cancer lung metastasis. On the other hand, Malat1-knockout mice are viable and develop normally. On a quest to discover the fundamental roles of MALAT1 in physiological and pathological processes, we find that this lncRNA is downregulated during osteoclastogenesis in humans and mice. Remarkably, Malat1 deficiency in mice promotes osteoporosis and bone metastasis of melanoma and mammary tumor cells, which can be rescued by genetic add-back of Malat1. Mechanistically, Malat1 binds to Tead3 protein, a macrophage-osteoclast-specific Tead family member, blocking Tead3 from binding and activating Nfatc1, a master regulator of osteoclastogenesis, which results in the inhibition of Nfatc1-mediated gene transcription and osteoclast differentiation. Notably, single-cell transcriptome analysis of clinical bone samples reveals that reduced MALAT1 expression in pre-osteoclasts and osteoclasts is associated with osteoporosis and metastatic bone lesions. Altogether, these findings identify Malat1 as a lncRNA that protects against osteoporosis and bone metastasis.

    Abstract We previously showed that MYC promoted Burkitt lymphoma (BL) growth by inhibiting the tumor suppressor miR-150, resulting in release of miR-150 targets MYB and ZDHHC11. The ZDHHC11 gene encodes three different transcripts including a mRNA (pcZDHHC11), a linear long non-coding RNA (lncZDHHC11) and a circular RNA (circZDHHC11). All transcripts contain the same region with 18 miR-150 binding sites. Here we studied the relevance of circZDHHC11, including this miR-150 binding site region, for growth of BL cells. CircZDHHC11 was mainly present in the cytoplasmic fraction in BL cells and its localization was not altered upon miR-150 overexpression. Knockdown of circZDHHC11 caused a strong inhibition of BL growth without affecting the expression levels of MYC, MYB, miR-150 and other genes. Overexpression of circZDHHC11 neither affected cell growth, nor rescued the phenotype induced by miR-150 overexpression. Genomic deletion of the miR-150 binding site region did not affect growth, nor did it change the effect of circZDHHC11 knockdown. This indicated that the miR-150 binding site region is dispensable for the growth promoting role of circZDHHC11. To conclude, our results show that circZDHHC11 is a crucial factor supporting BL cell growth independent of its ability to sponge miR-150.
