Abstract Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D-TMDCs) with various physical characteristics have attracted significant interest from the scientific and industrial worlds in the years following Moore's law. The p-n junction is one of the earliest electrical components to be utilized in electronics and optoelectronics, and modern research on 2D materials has renewed interest in it. In this regard, device preparation and application have evolved substantially in this decade. 2D TMDCs provide unprecedented flexibility in the construction of innovative p-n junction device designs, which is not achievable with traditional bulk semiconductors. It has been investigated using 2D TMDCs for various junctions, including homojunctions, heterojunctions, P-I-N junctions, and broken gap junctions. To achieve high-performance p-n junctions, several issues still need to be resolved, such as developing 2D TMDCs of superior quality, raising the rectification ratio and quantum efficiency, and successfully separating the photogenerated electron-hole pairs, among other things. This review comprehensively details the various 2D-based p-n junction geometries investigated with an emphasis on 2D junctions. We investigated the 2D p-n junctions utilized in current rectifiers and photodetectors. To make a comparison of various devices easier, important optoelectronic and electronic features are presented. We thoroughly assessed the review's prospects and challenges for this emerging field of study. This study will serve as a roadmap for more real-world photodetection technology applications.

Abstract The ratio of the nucleon F_{2} structure functions, F_{2}^{n}/F_{2}^{p}, is determined by the MARATHON experiment from measurements of deep inelastic scattering of electrons from ^{3}H and ^{3}He nuclei. The experiment was performed in the Hall A Facility of Jefferson Lab using two high-resolution spectrometers for electron detection, and a cryogenic target system which included a low-activity tritium cell. The data analysis used a novel technique exploiting the mirror symmetry of the two nuclei, which essentially eliminates many theoretical uncertainties in the extraction of the ratio. The results, which cover the Bjorken scaling variable range 0.19<x<0.83, represent a significant improvement compared to previous SLAC and Jefferson Lab measurements for the ratio. They are compared to recent theoretical calculations and empirical determinations of the F_{2}^{<mark>n}/F_{2}^{p} ratio.

Abstract In this submission, we discuss the growth of charge-controllable GaAs quantum dots embedded in an n-i-p diode structure, from the perspective of a molecular beam epitaxy grower. The QDs show no blinking and narrow linewidths. We show that the parameters used led to a bimodal growth mode of QDs resulting from low arsenic surface coverage. We identify one of the modes as that showing good properties found in previous work. As the morphology of the fabricated QDs does not hint at outstanding properties, we attribute the good performance of this sample to the low impurity levels in the matrix material and the ability of n- and p-doped contact regions to stabilize the charge state. We present the challenges met in characterizing the sample with ensemble photoluminescence spectroscopy caused by the photonic structure used. We show two straightforward methods to overcome this hurdle and gain insight into QD emission properties.

Abstract Although most studies have indicated that biochar can boost rice (Oryza sativa) growth, the material may also suppress it, depending on ratios of carbon (C) to nitrogen (N) and available N to available phosphorous (P). The current study sought to examine the impacts of biochar on rice growth and to identify underlying mechanisms. A pot experiment was conducted using two soils of high (3.05%) and low (0.54%) organic carbon (OC) content, mixed with 0, 1.5, 3, 6, and 12% biochar and planted with rice. Rice growth components, five rice tissue nutrients, and nine soil properties were measured. The results showed that the response of rice growth to biochar rates could be described using an exponential‐growth function in high‐OC soil but an inverted U‐shaped curve in low‐OC soil. In high‐OC soil, the 12% biochar rate led to the greatest total biomass, increased by 47%, whereas in low‐OC soil, the 3 and 6% rates exhibited the highest total biomass, increased by 44%, compared to the no‐biochar added soils. Biochar elevated the C:N ratio from 11.5 to 39.1, with an optimal range of 20–30 corresponding to the highest rice growth. Biochar declined the ratio of NH₄‐N to Mehlich‐1 P, causing N deficiency. In brief, high biochar rates may suppress rice growth when the soil C:N ratio exceeds 30. The applied biochar rate should be considered based on soil properties typically OC and N content to obtain the C:N ratio between 20 and 30 for optimal rice growth.

  10. Article ; Online: Arginine and methionine increase the enzymatic activity of microbes involved in N and P cycles in arid soil from the Chihuahuan desert

Abstract: ... of carbon and nitrogen from the amino acids may reduce the C:N ratio in the soil, enhancing ...

Abstract Root exudates are mainly composed of sugars, organic acids, and amino acids. These are carbon sources that recruit beneficial bacterial communities in the rhizosphere. However, the composition of the root exudates is variable and mainly unknown for plants from arid lands, such as Agave lechuguilla Torr. This work studied the effect of different metabolites identified in the rhizosphere of A. lechuguilla Torr. (Maltose, lactose, oxalic and tartaric acids, arginine, and methionine), over the enzymatic activity and abundance of nitrogen-fixing bacteria and organic phosphorus mineralizing bacteria, as well as the changes in the nutrient availability in the soil. It was found that only the amino acids increased the nitrogenase and phosphatase activity, and these increments were reflected in the available nutrient concentration in the soil. Likewise, the presence of carbon and nitrogen from the amino acids may reduce the C:N ratio in the soil, enhancing the mineralization of organic matter and the concentration of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates. This work shows the complexity of the nutrient recycling process in the soil and the essential role of bacteria in making nutrients available to plants. Understanding this process could aid in improving the establishment of plants in eroded ecosystems or under the harsh conditions of arid environments.
