    Abstract Introduction: Deep sea has numerous bacteria which dominate in the biomass of deep-sea sediments. Some deep-sea bacteria may possess the capacity to destroy mammal health by the alteration of gut microbiota, acting as potential pathogens. Objectives: Pathogenic bacteria are great threats to human health. However, the ultimate origin of pathogenic bacteria has not been intensively explored. In this study, therefore, the influence of deep-sea bacteria on the gut microbiota was evaluated on a global scale. Methods: The bacteria isolated from each of 106 deep-sea sediment samples were transplanted into mice in our study to assess the infectiousness of deep-sea bacteria. Results: The results showed that some bacteria from deep sea, an area that has existed since the earth was formed, could proliferate in mouse gut. Based on the infectious evaluation of the bacteria from each of 106 deep-sea sediments, the bacteria isolated from 13 sediments invaded the gut bacterial communities of mice, leading to the significant alteration of mouse gut microbiota. Among the 13 deep-sea sediments, the bacteria isolated from 9 sediments could destroy mouse health by inducing glucose metabolism deterioration, liver damage and inflammatory symptom. As an example, a bacterium was isolated from deep-sea sediment DP040, which was identified to be Bacillus cereus (termed as Bacillus cereus DP040). Bacillus cereus DP040 could invade the gut microbiota of mice to change the gut microbial structure, leading to inflammatory symptom of mice. The deep-sea sediments containing the bacteria destroying the health of mice were distributed in hydrothermal vent, mid-ocean ridge and hadal trench of the Indian Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. Conclusion: Our findings demonstrate that deep sea is an important origin of potential pathogenic bacteria and provide the first biosecurity insight into the alien species invasion of deep-sea bacteria into mammal gut microbiota.

    Abstract Recent studies have reported that HOXB-AS3 (HOXB Cluster Antisense RNA 3) is an intriguing molecule with dual functionality as a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) and putative coding peptide in tumorigenesis and progression. The significant expression alterations of HOXB-AS3 were detected in diverse cancer types and closely correlated with clinical stage and patient survival. Furthermore, HOXB-AS3 was involved in a spectrum of biological processes in solid tumors and hematological malignancies, such as stemness, lipid metabolism, migration, invasion, and tumor growth. This review comprehensively analyzes its clinical relevance for diagnosis and prognosis across human tumors and summarizes its functional role and regulatory mechanisms in different malignant tumors, including liver cancer, acute myeloid leukemia, ovarian cancer, lung cancer, endometrial carcinoma, colon cancer, and oral squamous cell carcinoma. Overall, HOXB-AS3 emerges as a promising biomarker and novel therapeutic target in multiple human tumors.

    Abstract Diffusion plays a vital role during the fabrication of many materials. It is a well-known fact that stress can influence diffusion behavior. In order to optimize material processing techniques, a quantitative evaluation of the effect of stress on diffusion is essentially required. By analyzing the free energy change in a Ti-O system during diffusion, a phase-field model was developed to address this issue. Using this model, the diffusion of oxygen atoms in pure titanium under different stress states was investigated. It was observed that the true equilibrium concentration of oxygen was proportional to its hydrostatic pressure. Tensile stress can increase the oxygen concentration. This raise in concentration decreased with temperature. However, the promotion of diffusion can be attained in deeper regions at a higher temperature. On the contrary, compressive stress inhibited the diffusion of oxygen in pure titanium. Under a certain compressive stress, the decrease in the oxygen concentration at the surface layer was more significant at a lower temperature, while a decrease could be observed at a deeper distance from the surface at a higher temperature. A thermodynamic explanation of the effect of stress on diffusion was given based on the proposed phase-field model.

    Abstract Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) encompasses a wide range of cognitive disorders stemming from cerebrovascular issues, such as strokes or small vessel disease. These conditions often pose challenges to traditional diagnostic approaches due to their multifactorial nature and varied clinical presentations. Recently, next-generation sequencing (NGS) technologies have provided detailed analyses of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in the molecular pathobiology of VCI. These new findings help with molecular-based diagnostics and treatments of VCI. Within this realm, the concept of immune modulation, especially through specific vaccinations, emerges as a promising therapeutic strategy in VCI mitigation. In this review, we comprehensively elucidate the function of lncRNAs in VCI, emphasizing the advanced understanding of VCI's molecular underpinnings made possible through NGS technologies. Significant focus is placed on the immune system's role in VCI, particularly the neuroinflammatory processes which are consequential to cerebrovascular abnormalities. We believe that lncRNAs participate in regulating these immunological pathways, potentially guiding the development of vaccines targeting VCI. In this context, we propose a novel perspective: using knowledge about lncRNA profiles and functions to guide vaccine development, we can potentially exploit the body's immune response to mitigate or prevent VCI. This approach has the potential to revolutionize VCI management by introducing targeted immunization strategies informed by molecular signatures, a concept that remains largely unexplored in current research endeavors. In addition, we summarize current progress and propose future directions, advocating for robust, interdisciplinary studies to validate the potential intersections between lncRNA landscapes, VCI pathology, and immunology. This review aims to spur innovative research and promote the development of lncRNA-informed vaccine strategies as proactive interventions against the cognitive consequences of VCI.

    Abstract Aim: To conduct a meta-analysis to evaluate the role of heparin versus normal saline lock in the care of peripheral intravenous catheters.
    Design: A meta-analysis.
    Methods: This meta-analysis searched nine databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on heparin versus normal saline for the care of peripheral intravenous catheters in children up to April 5, 2023. The quality of included RCTs was evaluated using the risk of bias tool of Cochrane library. RevMan5.3 software was used for data analysis.
    Results: Ten RCTs with a total of 1255 children were involved. Meta-analysis indicated that heparin lock reduced the incidence of blockage of peripheral intravenous catheter [OR = 2.01, 95% CI (1.42,2.84), p < 0.001], prolonged the duration of peripheral intravenous catheter indwelling[MD = -0.43, 95% CI (-0.75, -0.11), p = 0.008]. There were no statistical differences in the incidence of phlebitis [OR = 1.02, 95% CI (0.59, 1.74), p = 0.95 W].
    Public contribution: Heparin may have more benefits in the nursing care of peripheral intravenous catheters compared with normal saline.

    Abstract Background: With the aging of the population and the increasing trend of chronic illnesses, the demand for palliative care is growing. Undergraduate nursing students will be the main providers of palliative care in the future. Therefore, it's important to enhance their capability for palliative care.
    Objectives: The purpose of this study was to optimize palliative care education, based on undergraduate nursing students' perceptions and educational needs through the application of the importance-performance analysis and Borich needs assessment model.
    Design: A cross-sectional descriptive study.
    Setting: Nursing department in Wenzhou, China.
    Participants: A total of 448 full-time undergraduate nursing students were recruited for the study.
    Methods: Importance-performance analysis was used to identify items that obtain high priority for improvement, and the Borich needs assessment model and the Locus for focus model were used to prioritize educational needs. The three methods were integrated to determine the top-priority content to meet undergraduate nursing students' educational needs in palliative care.
    Results: The items located in Quadrant II of Importance-performance analysis, ranked in the first 10 in Borich needs assessment, and located in Quadrant I of the Locus for focus model were defined as top-priority content. These included: "respiratory symptoms: pleural effusion, superior vena cava syndrome, respiratory difficulty," "Care of terminal symptoms," "Awareness of dying," "Care of remains," "Cooperation between interdisciplinary teams," and "Rights and interests of dying patients."
    Conclusion: Several years of development of palliative care education have made nursing students aware of its importance. However, they have reported that education remains insufficient. A greater focus on palliative care education is needed to ensure they are better prepared. Specific attention should be given to cooperation between interdisciplinary teams, dealing with death and dying, rights and interests of people who were dying.
