Abstract The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease hypothesis (DOHaD) proposes that growth during the prenatal period might play a critical role in health, affecting the development of diseases, such as osteoporosis. Bone health is particularly affected by human behaviors when sports participation constitutes the main manifestation of physical exercise. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between birth weight (BW) and bone mineral content (BMC) among adolescents, as well as to identify if sports participation and maturity can affect this relationship. The sample was composed of adolescents with ages ranging from 11 to 18 years, stratified according to normal birth weight (n = 331), low birth weight (n = 36), and macrosomia (n = 47), extracted from a wider cross-sectional study (ABCD Growth Study). BW was self-reported by the adolescent's parent. Sports participation was assessed by face-to-face interview. BMC was assessed using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. In the multivariate models, the relationships between BW and BMC remained non-significant, while sports participation was significantly related to BMC on lower limbs among boys (r = 0.154; p value = .001) and BMC of upper limbs among girls (r = 0.124; p value = .044). APHV was related to BMC of upper limbs among boys (r = 0.137; p value = .001). In conclusion, BMC was not affected by BW, while this phenomenon seems to be significantly affected by the positive impact of sports participation and maturation on it.

Abstract Background: Cardiovascular diseases have a high prevalence in adults and their development begins in the first decades of life. On the other hand, sports participation in childhood and adolescence provides benefits which can delay the onset of these diseases.
Aim: To synthesize the available literature on the impact of sports participation on cardiovascular outcomes in children and adolescents.
Methods: This systematic review was conducted on studies of children and adolescents (aged 8-18 years) who regularly practiced a sport and had reported cardiovascular outcomes (blood pressure and intima-media thickness) recorded. The Medline/PubMed, SciELO, Reference Citation Analysis (https://www.referencecitationanalysis.com/) and Bireme databases were searched.
Results: In total, 3314 publications for blood pressure and 122 publications for intima-media thickness were identified in the databases. After exclusions (
Conclusion: Sports participation seems to promote benefits to cardiovascular structure and function in adolescents. However, studies with adolescents are scarce and further research is needed to understand this phenomenon.

Abstract Laryngopharyngeal cancers are one of the most commonly diagnosed head and neck malignancies frequently presenting primarily with change in voice. Radiotherapy being the main modality of treatment for early cancers continues to affect voice. Hence, acoustic analysis of the voice offers quantifiable values of several parameters delineating the obvious effect of the therapy. A total number of 60 patients, diagnosed with laryngopharyngeal cancers undergoing radiotherapy underwent acoustic voice assessment using Dr. speech software pre-treatment and at 1 and 3 months post radiotherapy. Data analysis was done using Mann-Whitney test and Wilcoxon signed rank test and a significant p value was obtained. The results of the study showed fundamental frequency (F0) and noise to harmonic ratio (NHR) to be the most affected in comparison to Jitter and Shimmer. The F0 and NHR values across baseline evaluation, first month and third month follow up showed a steady deterioration which was significant. The deterioration noted from the first to third month was not statistically significant. Across genders both F0 and NHR deterioration is more in males than in females. Radiotherapy causes definitive alterations in some acoustic measures of voice, which make the voice disharmonic and hoarse with contribution of harshness and breathiness. The effect is more pronounced on vocal parameters that are structure and projection based as evidenced by deterioration in values noted in F0 and NHR. Persistent deteriorated acoustic parameters for a longer duration of time are more likely which emphasizes the need for early voice rehabilitation.

Abstract Vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) is a fungal infection caused mainly by Candida albicans. The treatment of VVC with azoles has been impaired due to the increased cases of resistance presented by this pathogen. The aim of the present study was to investigate the antifungal activity of mucoadhesive chitosan nanoparticles encapsulating both green propolis and fluconazole for topical use in the treatment of VVC. The nanoparticles were prepared by the ionic gelation method, resulting in a size of 316.5 nm containing 22 mg/kg of green propolis and 2.4 mg/kg of fluconazole. The nanoparticles were non-toxic in vitro using red blood cells or in vivo in a Galleria mellonella toxicity model. The treatment of female BALB/c mice infected by C. albicans ATCC 10231 with topical nanoparticles co-encapsulating fluconazole and green propolis was effective even using a fluconazole amount 20 times lower than the amount of miconazole nitrate 2% cream. Considering that the mucoadhesive property of chitosan, which is known to allow a prolonged retention time of the compounds at the mucous epithelia, the antifungal potential of the phenols and flavonoids present in green propolis may have favored the effectiveness of this treatment. These results indicate that this formulation of topical use for fluconazole associated with green propolis can be used as a promising approach to therapy for the treatment of VVC, thus contributing to reducing the development of resistance to azoles.

Abstract Farnesol is a natural essential oil with antimicrobial properties. Complexation of farnesol in chitosan nanoparticles can be useful to improve its bioavailability and potentiate its antifungal capabilities such as inhibition of hyphal and biofilm formation. The aim of this study was to develop and characterize chitosan nanoparticles with farnesol (NF) and evaluate their toxicity and antifungal action on C. albicans in vivo. The NF were prepared by the ionic gelation method and showed physicochemical characteristics such as diameter less than 200 nm, monodisperse distribution, positive zeta potential, spherical morphology, and stability after 120 days of storage. In the evaluation of toxicity in Galleria mellonella, NF did not reduce the survival rate, indicating that there was no toxicity in vivo at the doses tested. In the assays with G. mellonella infected by C. albicans, the larvae treated with NF had a high survival rate after 48 h, with a significant reduction of the fungal load and inhibition of the formation of biofilms and hyphae. In the murine model of vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC), histopathological analysis showed a reduction in inflammatory parameters, fungal burden, and hyphal inhibition in mice treated with NF. The produced nanoparticles can be a promising alternative to inhibit C. albicans infection.

Abstract Covid-19-related encephalitis is a heterogeneous syndrome characterized by a combination of clinical, laboratory, and imaging features related to inflammation of the brain, where the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is presumably the causative agent. We reported a case of Covid-19-related encephalitis presenting with neuropsychiatric symptoms, including intense agitation. Reverse-transcriptase polymerase-chain-reaction in cerebrospinal fluid was positive for SARS-CoV-2. Our case expands the literature about neurologic manifestations of Covid-19 and emphasizes the possibility of prominent behavioral symptoms as the initial manifestation.
