Abstract Foot-and-mouth disease is a highly contagious disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals, resulting in considerable economic losses. Its causal agent is foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), a picornavirus. Due to its error-prone replication and rapid evolution, the transmission and evolutionary dynamics of FMDV can be studied using genomic epidemiological approaches. To analyze FMDV evolution and identify possible transmission routes in an Argentinean region, field samples that tested positive for FMDV by PCR were obtained from 21 farms located in the Mar Chiquita district. Whole FMDV genome sequences were obtained by PCR amplification in seven fragments and sequencing using the Sanger technique. The genome sequences obtained from these samples were then analyzed using phylogenetic, phylogeographic, and evolutionary approaches. Three local transmission clusters were detected among the sampled viruses. The dataset was analyzed using Bayesian phylodynamic methods with appropriate coalescent and relaxed molecular clock models. The estimated mean viral evolutionary rate was 1.17 × 10

Abstract The frequency and severity of extreme events related to climate change have intensified worldwide in the last decades. It is documented that increasing extreme rainfall and flooding cause more nutrient runoff into waterbodies, initiating numerous harmful algal bloom (HAB) events, especially in fragile ecosystems. We analyze the dramatic economic damage of one of these episodes in Mar Menor, the largest salt-water lagoon in Europe. We show that when the public perceived the severity of environmental degradation, the return on housing investment was 43% lower in the surroundings than in similar neighboring zones 6 years after the HAB (2015). This represents a loss in housing wealth of more than 4000 million euros, around ten times the gains of changing from dry-farming to irrigated crops, which makes this ecosystem fragile. Hence, we quantify some of the economic consequences of ecological deterioration linked to episodes of Global Climate Change.

Abstract In recent decades, the Mar Menor coastal lagoon has experienced a significant deterioration in the quality of its waters. The first source is the intensive agriculture in its watershed, with poor or non-application of soil conservation measures and excessive nitrogenous fertilizers. The second source are the abandoned open-pit mining zones. The aim of this study is, on one hand, to estimate the current nitrogen and sediment inputs to the lagoon and, in the other hand, to evaluate the impact of different control measures in order to select and prioritize the most effective ones. In this way, it will be possible to improve the ecological status of the lagoon. The distributed eco-hydrological model TETIS was used for these two objectives, activating the sediment, nitrogen and crop modules. The model was implemented with a spatial discretization was 5 m at daily time step. The evaluated measures are: reforestation of the mineral extraction zone with coniferous, use of support practices like hedgerows and contouring, adjustment of the applied fertilizer, zones where irrigated intensive crops are replaced by olive trees, shrubs and terracing, and finally, sediment retention ponds.Reforestation and terracing are crucial to reduce the sediment yield and the high erosion rates. Support practices and crop replacements shows a significant reduction in the case of the nitrogen associated to the runoff (water and sediments) which discharges directly into the lagoon. Finally, fertilizer adjustment is the more effective measure to reduce the nitrogen input to runoff and percolation.

Abstract The reduction of metal artifacts remains a challenge in computed tomography because they decrease image quality, and consequently might affect the medical diagnosis. The objective of this study is to present a novel method to correct metal artifacts based solely on the CT-slices. The proposed method consists of four steps. First, metal implants in the original CT-slice are segmented using an entropy based method, producing a metal image. Second, a prior image is acquired using three transformations: Gaussian filter, Parisotto and Schoenlieb inpainting method with the Mumford-Shah image model and L0 Gradient Minimization method (L0GM). Next, based on the projections from the original CT-slice, prior image and metal image, the sinogram is corrected in the traces affected by metal in the process called normalization and denormalization. Finally, the reconstructed image is obtained by FBP and a Nonlocal Means (NLM) filtering. The efficacy of the algorithm is evaluated by comparing five image quality metrics of the images and by inspecting regions of interest (ROI). Phantom data as well as clinical datasets are included. The proposed method is compared with three established metal artifact reduction (MAR) methods. The results from a phantom and clinical dataset show the visible reduction of artifacts. The conclusion is that IMIF-MAR method can reduce streak metal artifacts effectively and avoid new artifacts around metal implants, while preserving the anatomical structures. Considering both clinical and phantom studies, the proposed MAR algorithm improves the quality of clinical images affected by metal artifacts, and could be integrated in clinical setting.

Abstract Underreporting of occupational diseases (OD) is a social and economic problem, because it has negative consequences for both the welfare of the affected workers and its impact on budgetary planning for the management of health services. We evaluated the healthcare costs of a sample of 13 cases of OD treated at a public hospital in Barcelona between 2014 and 2021, and officially accepted by the National Institute of Social Security (INSS). The total cost of care was €474,859, with an average cost of €36,528 per patient. By diagnostic group, the highest costs were associated with cancer cases, accounting for 79% of the total (€375,068). The findings of this study reflect the economic impact of health care provided by a public hospital to patients with an OD recognized by the INSS.

Abstract The Mar Menor lagoon combined high biological production and environmental quality, making it an important economic engine. However, the pressure of human activities put its ecological integrity at risk, the oldest environmental impact being mining activity recorded since Roman times, about 3500 years ago, reaching its maximum intensity in the 20th century, contributing heavy metals to the lagoon sediments for almost 30 centuries. This work reviews the spatiotemporal evolution of the main heavy metals in this coastal lagoon using data from 272 surface sediment samples obtained during the last 40 years and two deep cores covering the total history of the lagoon (c. 6500 yrs BP), so as their incidence in the lagoon trophic web. The observed patterns in sedimentation, sediment characteristics and heavy metal content respond to the complex interaction, sometimes synergistic and sometimes opposing, between climatic conditions, biological production and human activities, with mining being mainly responsible for Pb, Zn and Cd inputs and port activities for Cu. High Fe/Al, Ti/Al and Zr/Al ratios identify periods of mining activity, while periods of arid climatic conditions and deforestation that increase erosion processes in the drainage basin and silt concentration in the lagoon sediments are determined by high Zr/Rb and, to a lesser extent, Zr/Al and Si/Al ratios. After the cessation of direct discharges into the lagoon in the 1950s, the recent evolution of heavy metals concentration and its spatial redistribution would be determined by hydrographic and biogeochemical processes, solubility of different elements, and coastal works in harbours and on beaches. The bioconcentration factor decreases along the trophic levels of the food web, suggesting that the lagoon ecosystem provides an important service by retaining heavy metals in the sediment, largely preventing their bioavailability, but actions involving resuspension or changes in sediment conditions would pose a risk to organisms.

Title translation Impact of variation in altitude above sea level on clinical and hemodynamic parameters in pulmonary arterial hypertension: case report.
Abstract Clinical monitoring of pulmonary arterial hypertension in our country, in which patients come from different altitudes above sea level, forces us to rule out pulmonary hypertension in relation to chronic exposure to high heights, described in third group of international classification. When reviewing the hemodynamic variations in pulmonary pressure with exercise at altitude with respect to sea level in healthy patients, this is greater in height, this would explain that the patient with pulmonary arterial hypertension is more symptomatic while living at a higher altitude above sea level.
