Series title Michael Oakeshott Selected Writings
Abstract From the 1920s to the 1980s Oakeshott filled dozens of notebooks with his private reflections, both personal and intellectual. Their contents range from aphorisms to miniature essays, forming a unique record of his intellectual trajectory over his entire career. This volume makes them accessible in print for the first time, drawing together a host of his previously inaccessible observations on politics, philosophy, art, education, and much else besides. Religion in particular emerges as an o

Abstract The domino Michael/Mannich (DMM) annulation reaction between an N-sulfinyl lithiodienamine and an electrophilic alkene is developed for the synthesis of chiral 2-amino cyclohexenes, a key building block in asymmetric synthesis. The DMM reaction proceeds at low temperature while maintaining the stereochemical fidelity. The product functionalized amino cyclohexenes, here obtained in 55–82% yield with diastereomeric ratios as high as >19:1.

Abstract Background: Return to play (RTP) protocols are an important part of recovery management following a sport-related concussion (SRC) and can prevent athletes from returning to competition too early and thereby avoid prolonged recovery times. To assist sporting organizations in the development of RTP guidelines, the Concussion in Sports Group (CISG) provides scientific-based recommendations for the management of SRC in its consensus statement on concussion in sport.
Objectives: This study investigates commonalities and differences among current RTP protocols of international sporting organizations and examines the implementation of the most recent CISG recommendations.
Methods: Concussion guidelines and medical rules of 12 international sporting organizations from contact, collision and combat sports were accessed via the organizations websites and compared regarding the management of SRC and the RTP decision.
Results: Only six of the included organizations developed and published their own concussion guidelines, which included an RTP protocol on their website. The number of steps until RTP was similar across the different protocols. Each protocol required at least one medical examination before clearing an athlete to RTP. A high variation among organizations was found for initial resting period after injury, the implementation of sport-specific training drills and the time needed to complete the protocol before returning to competition. At the date of this study (9 September 2023), none of the accessible RTP protocols were updated to include the latest version of the CISG consensus statement.
Conclusion: To improve the safety of athletes after a head injury, sporting organizations should develop sport-specific guidelines according to the latest CISG consensus statement, and this should be updated regularly. Implementation is especially important in combat sports, where there is a high incidence of head injury. Thus, there is a requirement for the most up-to-date concussion management protocols in these sports.

Abstract Background: Dental caries is the most common childhood disease worldwide. In the mid-1960s, mandatory Community Water Fluoridation (CWF) was introduced in the Republic of Ireland (RoI) aimed at reducing the prevalence and severity of dental caries in the population. In 2017, approximately, 71% of the Irish population was supplied with fluoridated drinking water.
Objectives: To review all children's dental health surveys at National, Regional and County-levels conducted in the Republic of Ireland from 1950 to 2021 and describe trends in dental caries prevalence. The secondary objective was to compare dental caries experience in children living in areas with and without CWF.
Methods: Seven databases (Embase, Medline Ovid, PubMed, Cochrane, Web of Science, Scopus and Lenus Ireland) were systematically searched followed by lateral searches from reference lists. Studies reporting the caries experience of Irish children were eligible for inclusion. Two authors independently evaluated the quality of included studies using the Joanna Briggs Institute Critical Appraisal Checklist.
Results: Thirty-one studies were included. Over the last 70 years, at National, Regional and County levels, mean dmft/DMFT (decayed, missing and filled teeth) scores have decreased and the percentage of caries-free children has increased in 5, 8, 12, and 15-year-olds. The decline in dental caries indices observed throughout the country was greater in children living in areas with CWF. Between the 1960s and 2002, the mean dmft scores for 5-year-olds living in the RoI were reduced by approximately 82% and 69% for the fluoridated and non-fluoridated groups respectively. Reduction in the mean DMFT scores for the 12-year-olds were 75% and 71%, respectively, for the fluoridated and non-fluoridated groups. Between 1961 and 2014, reductions in the mean dmft/DMFT scores among 5 and 12-years-olds living in County Dublin were approximately 88% and 90% respectively. These results should be interpreted in the context of widespread use of fluoridated toothpaste in the RoI.
Conclusions: Large reductions in the prevalence of dental caries in Irish children have been observed over the last seven decades. Greater dental caries reductions have been reported among children living in areas with CWF compared to those without CWF.

Abstract Abstract Editorial scholarship is once again in a state of upheaval. Digital scholarly editing, for all it has achieved, has not accommodated the increasingly digital nature of cultural production and consumption. The theories and practices of digital scholarly editing need to better account for born-digital cultural materials like social media content, digital fiction, and video games. This paper discusses the state-of-the-art in digital scholarly editing, and advocates for future forms of digital scholarly editing and publishing suited to the born-digital.

Abstract Education in Special Care Dentistry (SCD) at undergraduate and postgraduate levels is often limited when compared with other dental specialities, even though dental professionals encounter people with Special Healthcare Needs (SHCNs) on a very regular basis. This literature review examined whether education at undergraduate and postgraduate level increases dental students' and professionals' confidence in managing a patient with SHCN. It also appraised whether there was a correlation between increased practitioner confidence and increased quality of care for people with SHCN. This review also examined educational efforts worldwide, and whether there is an increased emphasis on providing education in SCD to dental students. It was found that those who received high-quality practical and theoretical education on how to properly manage patients with SHCN reported having higher levels of confidence than those who did not. People also reported being far more likely to employ the proper behavior management techniques and were more likely to treat people with SHCN regularly. There has been an increased emphasis on providing education in SCD worldwide in recent years, but a number of barriers still exist to providing complete education in the area.

Abstract This dataset was collected for the purpose of applying fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) techniques to real data from an industrial facility. The data for an air handling unit (AHU) is extracted from a building management system (BMS) and aligned with the Project Haystack naming convention. This dataset differs from other publicly available datasets in three main ways. Firstly, the dataset does not contain fault detection ground truth. The lack of labelled datasets in the industrial setting is a significant limitation to the application of FDD techniques found in the literature. Secondly, unlike other publicly available datasets that typically record values every 1 min or 5 min, this dataset captures measurements at a lower frequency of every 15 min, which is due to data storage constraints. Thirdly, the dataset contains a myriad of data issues. For example, there are missing features, missing time intervals, and inaccurate data. Therefore, we hope this dataset will encourage the development of robust FDD techniques that are more suitable for real world applications.
