Abstract On-chip integrated meta-optics promise to achieve high-performance and compact integrated photonic devices. To arbitrarily engineer the optical trajectory along the propagation path in an on-chip integrated scheme is of significance in fundamental physics and various emerging applications. Here, we experimentally demonstrate an on-chip metasurface integrated on a waveguide to enable predefined arbitrary optical trajectories in the visible regime. By transformation of the transverse phase to generate longitudinal mapping, the guided waves are extracted and molded into any different optical trajectories (parabola, hyperbola, and cosine). More intriguingly, predefined polarization states with longitudinal variation are also successfully imparted along the trajectory. Owing to the on-chip propagation scheme, the trajectories are uniquely free from zero-order diffraction interference, naturally having a higher signal-to-noise ratio beyond conventional free-space forms. Overall, such on-chip optical trajectory engineering allows for miniaturized integration and can find paths in potential applications of complex optical manipulation, advanced laser fabrication, and microscopic imaging.

Abstract In recent years, the treatment of organic pollutants has become a global concern due to the threat to human health posed by emerging contaminants, especially antibiotic contamination. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) can solve the organic pollution problem well, which have been identified as a promising solution for the treatment of hard-to-handle organic compounds including antibiotic contaminants. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are excellent catalysts because of their flexible tunability, favorable thermal stability, abundant active sites, and facile exchangeability of intercalated anions. This paper conducted a systematic review of LDHs-based materials used for common antibiotic removal by three significant AOP technologies, such as photocatalysis, the Fenton-like processes, and peroxymonosulfate catalysis. The degradation effects studied in various studies were reviewed, and the mechanisms were discussed in detail based on the type of AOPs. Finally, the challenges and the application trends of AOPs that may arise were prospected. The aim of this study is to suggest ways to provide practical guidance for the screening and improvement of LDH materials and the rational selection of AOPs to achieve efficient antibiotic degradation. This could lead to the development of more efficient and environmentally friendly materials and processes for degrading antibiotics, with significant implications for our ecological conservation by addressing water pollution.

Abstract Background: Caryophyllaceae is a big family composed of many economic and medicinal species. However, the phylogeny of the family is insufficient and genome data are lacking for many species.
Objective: Using next-generation sequencing (NGS) to acquire the chloroplast (cp) genomes of Eremogone acicularis (F.N.Williams) Ikonn., E. brevipetala (Tsui & L.H.Zhou) Sadeghian & Zarre, E. bryophylla (Fernald) Pusalkar & D.K.Singh, E. kansuensis (Maxim.) Dillenb. & Kadereit, Shivparvatia glanduligera (Edgew.) Pusalkar & D.K.Singh, Silene atsaensis (Marq.) Bocquet, S. caespitella Williams, and S. lhassana (Williams) Majumdar.
Methods: Bioinformatic software was used to conduct the comparative genome and phylogeny analysis of these cp genomes.
Results: The eight cp genomes were 132 188-151 919 bp in length, containing 130-132 genes. A/T was dominant in simple sequence repeats (SSRs). Forward repeats and palindromic repeats were the most frequent in long terminal repeats (LTRs). Compared with the four species of Eremogone Fenzl, the inverted repeat (IR) boundaries of S. caespitella, S. atsaensis, S. lhassana, and Sh. glanduligera were significantly expanded. Four and one mutational hotspots were identified in the large single copy (LSC) region and small single copy (SSC) region, respectively. The ratio of nonsynonymous substitution to synonymous substitution (Ka/Ks ratio) showed these cp genomes may have undergone strong purifying selection. In the phylogenetic trees, both Silene L. and Eremogone were monophyletic groups. However, Sh. glanduligera was closely related to Amaranthus hypochondriacus.
Conclusion: These results have provided new evidence and useful information for species identification, evolution, and genetic research on the Caryophyllaceae.
Highlights: In this study, eight newly sequenced cp genomes of Caryophyllaceae species were reported for the first time.

Abstract Despite various advances in achieving arbitrary optics steering, one of the longstanding challenges is to achieve optical merging for combining multidirectional beams through single-time reflection/transmission in free space. Typically, dual-directional beam merging is conducted by combining half-transmission and half-reflection using beam splitters; however, it leads to a bulky system with stray light and low merging efficiency. The difficulty of free-space beam merging lies in imparting respective distinct wavevectors to different directional beams. Herein, we originally proposed and successfully demonstrated the free-space optical merging (FOM) functionality based on the inverse-designed meta-grating architecture in the visible regime. By utilizing the inverse problem solver, two proposed meta-grating schemes experimentally enable merging of dual-directional beams into the same outgoing angle for the first time merely through single-time reflection. We envision that the creation of free-space merging performance can be widely applicable to the future optical system and facilitate the miniature optical devices and integration.
