Abstract This case report describes two cases of unilateral limbal Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) in the same family. To our knowledge, these are the first two reported cases of unilateral limbal VKC. VKC is a chronic inflammatory disease that typically affects both eyes, with unilateral cases being rare and previously only reported in the tarsal form. Our first case involved a 12-year-old girl with a history of allergic asthma, who had been experiencing conjunctivitis in her right eye since the age of 7. Upon examination, she was diagnosed with unilateral limbal VKC and treated with 1% cyclosporine eye drops with a significant improvement observed at the one and three-month follow-ups. Her 7-year-old brother was also examined and found to have unilateral limbal VKC in his right eye, although it was milder and not associated with allergic pathogenesis. Therefore, in this case, a treatment with hydrocortisone eye drops was started leading to an immediate reduction of the itching. In both cases an IgE-mediated mechanism is less likely because of the monolateral eye involvement, the complete absence of nasal symptoms, the lack of correlation between symptoms and any pollen season, and the negative prick skin test in one of the two siblings. Both cases suggest that unilateral VKC may occur even in the limbal form and that genetic mechanisms may contribute to the inflammatory reaction in VKC. This report highlights the need for further studies to explain the occurrence of unilateral VKC cases and reminds clinicians to consider the possibility of unilateral limbal VKC in pediatric patients.

Abstract Aim: This cross-sectional study investigated the association between self-awareness and quality of therapeutic relationships following acquired brain injury (ABI) while controlling for the potential impact of cognitive problems. It also aimed to investigate attachment as a potential moderator.
Method: 83 adults with ABI were recruited alongside a key member of their community neurorehabilitation team. The Scale to Assess Therapeutic Relationships (STAR) was used to measure therapeutic relationship quality and attachment was measured using the Experiences in Close Relationships - Relationship Structure (ECR-RS) questionnaire. Awareness was measured using the Patient Competency Rating Scale (PCRS) and the Mayo-Portland Adaptability Inventory (MPAI-4) provided a measure of cognitive problems. The MPAI-4 also provided an additional measure of awareness.
Results: A significant association between self-awareness and therapeutic relationships was found in some regression models such that higher-quality relationships were associated with better awareness, after controlling for the impact of cognitive problems. Neither childhood parental attachment nor participants' attachment towards their rehabilitation staff were moderators.
Conclusion: The observed associations between awareness in clients and therapeutic relationships with rehabilitation staff may have importance for rehabilitation in this context. Results highlight the value of continuing to prioritize the therapeutic relational environment in ABI rehabilitation and research.

Abstract It's still not clear whether the mutational status of BRCA-mutated healthy hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) donors could have an impact on the engraftment. Comparing the studies present in literature, we focused on the correlation between BRCA mutations and the development of hematological malignancies and Fanconi anemia (FA); then, we explored HSCs types, frequencies, and functions in the presence of BRCA mutations, as well as the reconstitution of hematopoiesis after chemotherapy and radiation treatments. The role of BRCA mutations in the FA showed a possible involvement in the onset of the disease; the mutation carriers, indeed, did not show any sign of the typical phenotype of the FA. BRCA mutational status can be considered as a risk factor for hematological malignancies, but only for secondary malignancies and/or in the presence of bone marrow stress factors. Currently we don't know if a conditioning regimen could be compensated by BRCA mutated HSCs, even if murine models tried to show the possible differences between fully mutated, haploinsufficient and normal HSCs. Thus, given the downregulating effect of the mutations on hematopoiesis, it could be questionable to use the HSCs of a BRCA-mutated donor in the presence of another available donor with the same compatibility.

Abstract The molecular mechanism of how human serum transferrin (hTF) recognizes cisplatin at the atomic level is still unclear. Here, we report the molecular structure of the adduct formed upon the reaction of hTF with cisplatin. Pt binds the side chain of Met256 (at the N-lobe), without altering the protein overall conformation.

Abstract Background: Relational aspects of self-awareness following Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) are increasingly being recognized. However, research underpinning the nature of the association between self-awareness and quality of relationships has yet to be synthesized.
Method: Searches, which were completed between February 2022 and February 2023, consisted of combining terms related to ABI, self-awareness, and quality of relationships. Data were analyzed using the Synthesis Without Meta-Analysis (SWiM) approach.
Results: Associations between self-awareness and relationship quality across eight studies identified for this review differed in direction and significance. A more consistent pattern emerged, however, when studies assessing the quality of specific types of relationships i.e., spousal (
Conclusion: Results are discussed with consideration given to measures assessing the quality of specific relationships. In particular, such measures may tap into important patterns of interaction between two individuals, such as those related to attunement or communication, which may be valuable preconditions for improving awareness.
