    Abstract With the development of gut microbiota-specific interventions for mental disorders, the interactions between plant polysaccharides and microbiota in the intestinal and their consequent effects are becoming increasingly important. In this review, we discussed the role of plant polysaccharides in improving various mental disorders via the microbiota-gut-brain axis. The chemical and structural characteristics and metabolites of these plant polysaccharides were summarised. Plant polysaccharides and their metabolites have great potential for reshaping gut microbiota profiles through gut microbiota-dependent fermentation. Along the microbiota-gut-brain axis, the consequent pharmacological processes that lead to the elimination of the symptoms of mental disorders include 1) regulation of the central monoamine neurotransmitters, amino acid transmitters and cholinergic signalling system; 2) alleviation of central and peripheral inflammation mainly through the NLRP3/NF-κB-related signalling pathway; 3) inhibition of neuronal apoptosis; and 4) enhancement of antioxidant activities. According to this review, monosaccharide glucose and structure -4-α-Glcp-(1→ are the most potent compositions of the most reported plant polysaccharides. However, the causal structure-activity relationship remains to be extensively explored. Moreover, mechanistic elucidation, safety verification, and additional rigorous human studies are expected to advance plant polysaccharide-based product development targeting the microbiota-gut-brain axis for people with mental disorders.

    Abstract Peganum harmala L. (P. harmala), also known as Espand, Harmel, or Syrian rue, and Hypericum perforatum L. (H. perforatum), commonly known as St. John's wort, are two of the widely cultivated industrial crops and used worldwide in antihepatoma-related products. However, their main functional substances are still not clear, thus impeding the efficacy evaluations and quality controls of relative products around the world. In this work, the anti-hepatoma biomarkers of P. harmala and H. perforatum were clarified through the development of principal components analysis (PCA)-HPLC secondary metabolite mapping models. The chemical fingerprints of plant extracts were profiled by HPLC and then mapped to produce the secondary metabolite models using PCA. The models correlated the chemical information with the anti-hepatoma activities of plant extracts, thus indicating the functional inhibitors of P. harmala and H. perforatum against hepatoma cells. The activities of the identified compounds were validated by cytotoxic and apoptotic assays. The major inhibitors of P. harmala and H. perforatum against human hepatoma were determined to be harmine and quercetin, respectively. The IC50 values and the induced apoptotic rate of harmine on HepG2 cells were 20.7 ± 2.8 μM and 46.7 ± 3.5 %, respectively. The IC50 values and the induced apoptotic rate of quercetin on HepG2 cells were 49.5 ± 6.6 μM and 38.7 ± 2.6 %, respectively. In conclusion, the results significantly expanded the understanding of the biochemical foundations of P. harmala and H. perforatum, thus evidently supporting their current applications around the world. Moreover, harmine and quercetin could be used as biomarkers to evaluate the efficacy and quality of related products of industrial crops in therapeutic and health-improving applications.

    Abstract As a motivational factor, uniqueness drives individuals to seek and choose unique goods or experiences. The act of wearing masks obscures individuals' facial features and influences their desire for uniqueness. This study aims to explore how wearing masks promotes individual uniqueness- seeking behavior. Three experiments were performed using various product categories (Starbucks coffee cups, sweatshirts, suitcases, and baseball caps) and sample types (college student and adult samples). Experiment results show that wearing masks obscures individuals' facial features and weakens their self- perceived uniqueness, thereby increasing their willingness to actively purchase unique products. This study is the first to examine the effect of wearing masks on individuals' choice of unique products. Practically, the results suggest that customized products can compensate for the lack of self-perceived uniqueness brought about by facial occlusion, thus providing valuable guidance for companies and retailers that offer customized services in formulating and designing marketing strategies.

    Abstract Background: In recent decades, China has experienced a rapid increase in the number of elderly individuals and life expectancy, as well as industrialization, which is associated with an increased prevalence of Parkinson's disease (PD). However, inconsistent results have recently been reported. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence and distribution characteristics of PD among individuals aged 45 years and older.
    Methods: Using data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), we attempted to estimate the prevalence of PD and its distribution characteristics among 19,034 individuals aged 45 years and older residing in 446 communities/villages within 27 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities in mainland China. Cases were established based on a doctor's previous diagnosis. Crude and age-adjusted prevalence rates were calculated and stratified by age, sex, area of residence, education level, marital status, and geographic region. Logistic regression models were used to identify risk factors associated with PD.
    Results: We identified 178 patients with PD among 19,034 residents aged 45 years and older. The crude prevalence was 0.94%, and the age-adjusted prevalence was 0.82% for individuals aged 45 years and older. The prevalence of PD increased with age (P < 0.001). No significant differences were found in terms of sex, area of residence, or education level. Stratified by geographic region, the prevalence of PD was greater in North and Northwest China and lower in southern China (p < 0.001). Multiple regression analyses showed that age was a significant risk factor for PD.
    Conclusion: The prevalence of PD increased with age in the Chinese population.

    Abstract The use of coal as a source of energy is crucial for the growth of the national economy, but mining poses numerous risks and a potential for significant disasters. Coal mine safety is the prerequisite and guarantee for coal industry to achieve new industrialization and sustainable development. Therefore, it is crucial to predict a safety accident in the coal mine in advance. In order to facilitate the early warning of coal mine safety accidents, this study seeks to present a prediction model based on emergency management of safety accidents, which is a fusion model of principal component analysis (PCA) and long short-term memory neural network. According to the results, the correlation coefficients of risk identification and monitoring (a11), safety inspection and warning (a12), emergency planning and training (a13), material and technical support (a15), and macroenvironmental management (a21) were 0.718, 0.653, 0.628, 0.444, and 0.553, respectively, after the PCA dimensionality reduction process, demonstrating that the previous principal component analysis had a better effect. The absolute relative errors of each evaluation index of safety accident emergency management did not exceed the limit of 5%, including a15 and a21, whose values were 4.5% and −3.8%, while the relative errors of the remaining indicators were kept at a relatively low level. In conclusion, it is clear that the algorithm model suggested in this research improved the warning capabilities of safety accident emergency risk.
