Abstract Cationic and anionic polyelectrolytes, poly(vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride) (PVBTA) and poly(sodium styrene sulfate) (PSSS), were grafted on the surface of the silica particles, respectively, and then these two types of polyelectrolyte-grafted silica particles were applied to the colloidal layer preparation by convective self-assembly (CSA) using hydrophilic or hydrophobic glass substrates to investigate the effect of the interactions between the particles and the substrate surface on the resultant layer structures. When the PVBTA-grafted silica particle (PVBTA-Si) was used, the colloidal monolayers with a non-close-packed (NCP) structure were formed on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic glass substrates, where the NCP colloidal layers on the hydrophobic glass substrate have a somewhat more ordered structure than those on the hydrophilic glass substrate. In the case of the PSSS-grafted silica particle (PSSS-Si), on the other hand, stripe patterns with close-packed (CP) colloidal layers were obtained on both types of the glass substrates. The number of layers of the stripes on the hydrophilic glass substrate was less than that on the hydrophobic glass substrate, while the spacing and width of the stripes on both substrates were similar to each other. The difference in the structures of the colloidal layers obtained here indicates that an attractive interaction, such as an electrostatic attraction and a hydrophobic interaction, between the particle and the substrate surface is necessary to achieve the NCP structure by the CSA process using polyelectrolyte-grafted silica particles.

Abstract Diafiltration (DF) is a separation method used to separate and concentrate macromolecules, such as polysaccharides and proteins. To obtain high-purity target molecules by DF, appropriate conditions should be used. In this study, a mathematical model was developed to suggest appropriate ultra-filtration (UF) membrane modules for the separation of phycocyanin (PC) by multistep DF. PC is a protein produced by microalgae. The contribution of each UF membrane module to PC productivity and purity at each stage of the multistep DF process was quantified by the proposed model. The parameters required as model inputs (k, F

Abstract A 87-year-old female was pointed out wall thickness in the upper part of gastric body for examination of anemia. The mass had a contrast effect, some of it protruded outside the wall, and the surrounding lymph nodes were enlarged. Upper endoscopy showed irregular ulcerative lesion with submucosal volume from posterior wall to the greater curvature in the upper part of gastric body. Biopsy was performed, and GIST of stomach was diagnosed. Surgery was performed for the GIST of the stomach. During open surgery, invasion of pancreatic tail was observed, therefore proximal gastrectomy with D1 lymph node dissection and distal pancreatectomy were performed. Pathologically, the tumor measured 95×78×65 mm with mitotic figures(38/50 high-power fields). Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that tumor cells expressed positive results for c-kit, α-SMA and CD34, and negative results for S-100 and desmin on the basis of the histology and immunostaining profile, the tumor was diagnosed as a GIST. The patient was classed as high risk according to Fletcher's risk classification. Tumor invades pancreatic tail, and lymph node metastasis was observed. She was discharged on the postoperative day 27 and alive without tumor recurrence at 6 months after surgery, not undergoing adjuvant chemotherapy.

Abstract We present a 58-year-old female patient who underwent resection of a leiomyosarcoma arising from the right ovarian vein. She was referred to our hospital because of lower abdominal pain that had been present for 1 month prior to the visit. Ultrasound examination revealed a well-defined, smooth, lobulated, highly vascular mass(57 mm)adjacent to the distal portion of the duodenum. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography revealed the contrast enhancement mass (60 mm)located surround the right ovarian vein. In abdominal magnetic resonance image examination, the mass exhibited isointense signal on T1-weighted images, high signal on T2-weighted images, and restricted diffusion on diffusion- weighted images. We suspected primary leiomyosarcoma of the ovarian vein and proceeded with surgical intervention. On intraoperative findings, the mass was in contact with the duodenum and the inferior vena cava but dissection was easily achieved. We excised the mass together with the right ovarian vein. Pathological findings showed the mass was composed of proliferating spindle-shaped cells arranged in bundles. Some areas showed polygonal nuclear atypia and abnormal mitotic figures. Additional immunostaining showed positive for α-SMA, caldesmon, calponin, and negative for desmin, CD34, CKA1/AE3, S100. Based on the intraoperative findings, we diagnosed it as leiomyosarcoma arising of the right ovarian vein.

Abstract After filtration, filtered residue is recovered by a spoon, during which, the structure of the residue is destroyed, and the activity of the microorganism would be reduced. Thus, a more efficient recovery method of filtered residue is required. This study addressed the recovery method of filtered residue by the restoration of an elastic membrane, followed by cross flow. An elastic membrane composed of a copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate and polyacrylonitrile was prepared by photopolymerization. The pore diameter of the obtained membrane was about 10 μm. Abstract We report here a fatal oligohydramnios case, which was suspected due to autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease at first, but genetic analysis using chorionic tissue and umbilical cord after stillbirth led to the diagnosis of 17q12 deletion syndrome. Subsequent genetic analysis of the parents showed no 17q12 deletion. In this case, if the fetus had autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease, the recurrence rate in the next pregnancy was suspected to be 25%, but since it was a de novo autosomal dominant disorder, the recurrence rate is extremely low. When a fetal dysmorphic abnormality is detected, a genetic autopsy not only helps to understand the cause but also provides information about the recurrence rate. This information is important for the next pregnancy. A genetic autopsy is useful in cases of fetal deaths or abortions resulting from fetal dysmorphic abnormalities.

Abstract Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is commonly caused by PKD1, and mosaic PKD1 variants result in milder phenotypes. We present the case of a 32 year-old male with chronic active Epstein-Barr virus who underwent bone marrow transplantation with chemoradiotherapy at age 9. Despite a low-frequency mosaic splicing PKD1 variant, he developed severe renal cysts and end-stage renal disease in his 30 s. This case highlights how environmental factors may contribute to the genetic predisposition to ADPKD.

Abstract Approximately 90% of patients with autoimmune neutropenia (AIN) suffer from mild infections although neutrophil count often decreases to <500/μL. Here, we report 2 cases of infant pyogenic liver abscess complicated with AIN. We should consider the possibility of AIN as an underlying disease when diagnosing pyogenic liver abscess during childhood.

Abstract Separation of microalgae of various sizes and shapes is an important process that enables subsequent production of useful compounds. Herein, the separation of microalgae was accomplished using a magnetite-containing gel (42 μm) packed into a column. An algal suspension was injected into the top of the gel bed, after which water was passed through the column. The pressure generated during the process caused the lower domain of the gel bed to deform, resulting in narrowed gaps between the gel beads. When a suspension of Nannochloropsis sp. (0.0069-0.69 g L
