Abstract Cistanches Herba is a medicinal plant that has tonification properties and is commonly used in Asia. Owing to the imbalance between supply and demand, adulterants are frequently added for profit. However, there is no regulatory oversight because quality control tools are not sufficient for identifying heavily processed products. Thus, a novel molecular tool based on nucleotide signatures and species-specific primers was developed. The ITS2 regions from 251 Cistanches Herba and adulterant samples were sequenced. On the basis of SNP sites, four nucleotide signatures within 30~37 bp and six species-specific primers were developed, and they were validated by artificial experimental mixtures consisting of six different species and different ratios. This method was also applied to detect 66 Cistanches Herba products on the market, including extracts and Chinese patent medicines. The results demonstrated the utility of nucleotide signatures in identifying adulterants in mixtures. The market study revealed 36.4% adulteration: 19.7% involved adulteration with Cynomorium songaricum or Cistanche sinensis, and 16.7% involved substitution with Cy. songaricum, Ci. sinensis, or Boschniakia rossica. The results also revealed that Cy. songaricum was the most common adulterant in the market. Thus, we recommend the use of species-specific nucleotide signatures for regulating adulteration and verifying the quality assurance of medicinal product supply chains, especially for processed products whose DNA is degraded.

Abstract Ethnopharmacological relevance: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been widely used by the Chinese population for treatment of chronic hepatitis. However, the efficacy of TCM for patients with chronic hepatitis has not been confirmed, mostly due to the lack of available scientific parameters such as serum viral load to evaluate treatment response.
Aim of the study: We evaluated the efficacy of Rong-Yang-Jyh-Gan-Tang (RYJGT, composed of Long-Dan-Xie-Gan-Tang, Jia-Wei-Xia-Yao-San, Dan-Shen, and Hou-Po) on patients with chronic hepatitis C.
Materials and methods: Thirty-six patients with chronic hepatitis C who had no response to or had contraindications to interferon-ribavirin therapy were randomly allocated to receive RYJGT 15g/day or placebo for 12 weeks. After a 2-week washout period, patients were crossed over to receive placebo or RYJGT for another 12 weeks. Evaluation parameters included liver biochemistries, serum HCVRNA, side effects of RYJGT/placebo, and TCM symptoms.
Results: Of the patients who had 12-week RYJGT treatment, 51.7% had decreased serum HCVRNA levels, whereas only 25.8% patients had decreased levels in the placebo group (p=0.036). TCM patterns of "Damp-Heat" and "Liver Qi Depression" had significantly improved after RYJGT treatment in comparison with the placebo. Logistic analyses showed that RYJGT treatment, and pre-treatment values of TCM symptoms of "Damp-Heat" and "Liver Qi Depression", were statistically significant factors in predicting the decrease in serum HCVRNA.
Conclusion: Chronic hepatitis C patients who received a 12-week RYJGT treatment had significantly higher HCVRNA decrease ratio, and improved TCM symptoms of "Damp-Heat" and "Liver Qi Depression", than those who received the placebo. Our results require further larger scale clinical trials.

Abstract Background: Complementary and alternative medicine such as traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is now frequently used combined with Western medicine for treatment in chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Objective: We designed an open-label trial to investigate the safety and potential therapeutic effects of Ren Shen Yang Rong Tang (R-S-Y-R-T) in hemodialysis (HD) patients.
Methods: The experimental group was treated with additional R-S-Y-R-T combined with routine western medicine, while the control group was treated only with routine western medicine. The duration of study was 6 months. Primary outcomes were to evaluate the changes in serum hematocrit and albumin levels. Secondary outcomes including blood inflammatory markers (c-reactive protein [CRP], interleukin-6 [IL-6], and tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α]) were checked. Finally we also followed up the change of quality of life (QOL) in our subjects.
Results: Sixty nine respondents were enrolled in this trial. Finally a total of 59 patients (27 R-S-Y-R-T group, 32 control group) completed the 6-month follow-up. Primary outcomes showed no significant statistical change of hematocrit in either 2 group (P>0.05). But the R-S-Y-R-T group had a statistical increase in serum albumin (P<0.05). Secondary outcomes were that both TNF-α (P=0.003) and IL-6 (P=0.001) showed evident decrease in the R-S-Y-R-T group. CRP was identified without statistical difference in both groups (P=0.226). The R-S-Y-R-T group also had a significant improvement in QOL (P<0.05).
Conclusions: Our study suggests that R-S-Y-R-T could decrease chronic inflammation and increase the life quality in HD patients. Further larger clinical trial of long-term treatment with R-S-Y-R-T is necessary for evaluating treatment use.

Abstract Based on me data concerning detailed survey on land in the year 2009 and land change in the year 2010 in Rong County, a mountainous region of Sichuan Province, by using quantitative geographical model, we conduct quantitative analysis of the status quo of land use in Rong County in terms of land use diversification, land use centralization, land use combination type, land use geographic significance and comprehensive use degree of land use. m e results show some characteristics as follows. Firstly, land use in study area displays prominent characteristic of diversification: there is a high degree of completeness land use type; there is a great similarity among towns. Secondly. there is limited combination number of land use type; mostly the combination number of the towns is farmland. Thirdly, the town with prominent characteristic of diversification of land use in Rong County, have low degree of centralization of land use and relatively big combination number of land use type, and vice versa. Fourthly, the type and quantity of agricultural land resources with geographical significance are relatively complete with nothing missing; it abounds in untapped land, but the overall index values of land use are smaller than 300, with low overall use degree of land.

Abstract Late Miocene-Recent micropaleontological and geochemical records from Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1143 in the southern South China Sea (SCS) indicate that increase and decrease in abundance of siliceous plankton may be controlled mainly by the input of nutrients derived from land and provided by upwelling. A high export production event - a "biogenic bloom" event - occurred in the southern SCS between 12 and 6 Ma. During this period, high ratios of smectite/(illite + chlorite), smectite/quartz and Al/K indicate a high weathering intensity of the Asian continent, possibly due to the intensification of the East Asian Summer Monsoon (EASM), which may have increased the net flux of nutrients to the ocean, both directly through terrestrial input and indirectly through upwelling activity. A drop in Ba/Ti, Al/Ti and Ca/Ti values around 6 Ma may indicate a lowering of productivity, possibly due to the large consumption of sea surface nutrients by the "biogenic bloom". Alternatively, it may indicate a shift in terrigenous input source area. At about 5.4 Ma, a decrease in weathering intensity, as indicated by a sudden decrease in the values of smectite/(illite + chlorite), smectite/quartz and Al/K, might have led to a sudden decrease of terrestrial nutrient input to the SCS. We suggest that the biogenic bloom ended when nutrients in surface waters were exhausted, because of a decrease in supply as well as a decrease in upwelling intensity due to weakening of the EASM. As a result, radiolarians were absent in the studied area between ~6 and 3.2 Ma. At ~3.2 Ma, radiolarians began to recover, possibly because the start of Northern Hemispheric glaciation and the rapid uplift of the Tibet Plateau led to intensification of the East Asian monsoon. After the Mid-Pleistocene Climate Transition at 0.9 Ma, the abundance and mass accumulation rates of radiolarians increased, probably as a result of increased upwelling activity driven by the increasing intensity of the summer monsoon.
