    Abstract Sublingual immunotherapy for Japanese cedar pollinosis can improve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis and modify its natural course. However, sublingual immunotherapy requires a long treatment period and some patients do not respond to treatment. In this study, we aimed to identify biomarkers that could predict the efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy at an early stage. In this study, 40 patients from phase III trials were recruited and divided into good and poor response groups. Using peripheral blood mononuclear cells from before and two months after the start of medication, microarray, discriminant analysis, and real-time polymerase chain reaction were performed to extract candidate genes that could be biomarkers. Furthermore, these genes were validated in 30 patients in general clinical practice. Complement factor H was upregulated in the good response group and downregulated in the poor response group. Complement factor H may be a useful biomarker for predicting the efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy for Japanese cedar pollinosis at early time points after treatment initiation.

    Abstract A comprehensive method is proposed for the continuous update of the design rockmass parameters during tunnel excavation coupled to novel calculation of the Hoek-Brown strength parameters for given Mohr-Coulomb ones. The method starts with the strength parameters of Mohr-Coulomb or Hoek-Brown criterion used at the design stage of tunnels, and then updates them by using the displacements measured during the excavation of tunnels. The update is performed based on a well established back analysis procedure that determines both cohesion C and internal friction angle φ of the Mohr-Coulomb criterion. Then, these parameters either directly update or are converted to equivalent Hoek-Brown parameters that update the original design parameters of the tunnel. The need arising for conversion of parameters during the back analysis is thus addressed: A method is developed for the evaluation of the equivalent Hoek-Brown parameters for an axisymmetric structure subjected to major principal initial stress p0 and supported by internal pressure pi. Four characteristic cases are analysed theoretically and numerically with a finite differences code and found to be in excellent agreement. The equivalent parameters solution is developed in Matlab source code under a creative commons license and greatly enables the automation of the update procedure. Based on the updated parameters, it is possible to continuously modify the original design of underground support structures, according to the results of back analysis of measured displacements. The modified strength parameters of the H-B criterion can also be used for assessing the stability of the tunnels for the next excavation stage of the tunnels.

    Abstract Controlling the carrier dynamics in a semiconductor nanoparticulate photocatalyst is the key to developing catalytic activity. Generally, type I band alignment is unsuitable for photocatalysts because the photoinduced carriers accumulate in the narrow bandgap semiconductor. To avoid the termination of reactions and/or photocorrosion of materials caused by carrier accumulation, it is common to employ type II band alignment for photoenergy conversion systems instead of type I. However, CdS/ZnS core/mesoporous-shell heterostructures show superior photocatalytic activity despite having type I band alignment that is generally unfavorable for photocatalytic reactions. Transient absorption spectroscopy and time-resolved microwave conductivity revealed efficient photoinduced hole transfer from the CdS phase to the ZnS phase. The defect-mediated hole transfer from the CdS to the ZnS phase resulted in long-lived charge separation (>2.4 ms) leading to high photocatalytic performance. This study provides insight into defect-mediated carrier transfer in nanoparticulate photocatalysts, which could be used as a guideline for the design of highly active and stable nanoparticulate photocatalysts.

    Abstract A Ni-catalyzed direct C–H alkylation of N-quinolylbenzamides using alkylsilyl peroxides as alkyl-radical precursors is described. The reaction forms a new C(sp³)–C(sp²) bond via the selective cleavage of both C(sp³)–C(sp³) and C(sp²)–H bonds. This transformation shows a high functional-group tolerance and, due to the structural diversity of alkylsilyl peroxides, a wide range of alkyl chains including functional groups and complex structures can be introduced at the ortho-position of readily available N-quinolylbenzamide derivatives. Mechanistic studies suggest that the reaction involves a radical mechanism.

    Abstract Native human adult hemoglobin (Hb A) has mostly normal orientation of heme, whereas recombinant Hb A (rHb A) expressed in E. coli contains both normal and reversed orientations of heme. Hb A with the normal heme exhibits positive circular dichroism (CD) bands at both the Soret and 260-nm regions, while rHb A with the reversed heme shows a negative Soret and decreased 260-nm CD bands. In order to examine involvement of the proximal histidine (His F8) of either α or β subunits in determining the heme orientation, we prepared two cavity mutant Hbs, rHb(αH87G) and rHb(βH92G), with substitution of glycine for His F8 in the presence of imidazole. CD spectra of both cavity mutant Hbs did not show a negative Soret band, but instead exhibited positive bands with strong intensity at the both Soret and 260-nm regions, suggesting that the reversed heme scarcely exists in the cavity mutant Hbs. We confirmed by (1) H NMR and resonance Raman (RR) spectroscopies that the cavity mutant Hbs have mainly the normal heme orientation in both the mutated and native subunits. These results indicate that the heme Fe-His F8 linkage in both α and β subunits influences the heme orientation, and that the heme orientation of one type of subunit is related to the heme orientation of the complementary subunits to be the same. The present study showed that CD and RR spectroscopies also provided powerful tools for the examination of the heme rotational disorder of Hb A, in addition to the usual (1) H NMR technique.     Abstract A search for heavy pseudoscalar (A) and scalar (H) Higgs bosons decaying into a top quark pair (tt[over ¯]) has been performed with 20.3  fb^{-1} of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at a center-of-mass energy sqrt[s]=8  TeV. Interference effects between the signal process and standard model tt[over ¯] production, which are expected to distort the signal shape from a single peak to a peak-dip structure, are taken into account. No significant deviation from the standard model prediction is observed in the tt[over ¯] invariant mass spectrum in final states with an electron or muon, large missing transverse momentum, and at least four jets. The results are interpreted within the context of a type-II two-Higgs-doublet model. Exclusion limits on the signal strength are derived as a function of the mass m_{A/H} and the ratio of the vacuum expectation values of the two Higgs fields, tanβ, for m_{A/H}>500  GeV.
