Abstract Phosphonium ylide catalysis through an oxidative quenching cycle has been developed for visible-light-driven C-H imidation of arenes and heteroarenes. The present protocol could be applied not only to trihalomethylative lactonization reactions involving trifluoromethyl, trichloromethyl, and tribromomethyl radicals but also to the first example of an organophotoredox-catalyzed imidative lactonization reaction involving a nitrogen-centered electrophilic radical species.

Abstract The most precise measurements to date of the _{Λ}^{3}H lifetime τ and Λ separation energy B_{Λ} are obtained using the data sample of Pb-Pb collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=5.02  TeV collected by ALICE at the LHC. The _{Λ}^{3}H is reconstructed via its charged two-body mesonic decay channel (_{Λ}^{3}H→^{3}He+π^{-} and the charge-conjugate process). The measured values τ=[253±11(stat)±6(syst)]  ps and B_{Λ}=[102±63(stat)±67(syst)]  keV are compatible with predictions from effective field theories and confirm that the _{Λ}^{3}H structure is consistent with a weakly bound system.

Abstract We, for the first time, demonstrate high electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on PtFe alloy nanoparticles with stabilized Pt-skin layers supported on carbon black (PtxAL-PtFe/C), which allows the reduction of Pt loading to be lowered to 1/20 compared with a conventional Pt black cathode in proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE). The area-specific HER activity of PtxAL-PtFe/C was found to be ca. 2 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C at 80 °C and -0.02 V vs. RHE. PtxAL-PtFe/C exhibited the additional important advantage of suppressed H2O2 production during the HER in the presence of O2, which inevitably diffuses from the anode in PEMWE. Both the excellent HER performance and low H2O2 production are attributed to the lower adsorption energies of atomic hydrogen on Pt-skin surfaces, as revealed by DFT calculations.

Abstract The interaction of water with metal surfaces is at the heart of electrocatalysis. But there remain enormous uncertainties about the atomistic interactions at the electrode-electrolyte interface (EEI). As the first step toward an understanding of the EEI, we report here the details of the initial steps of H

Abstract Thioredoxins are nearly ubiquitous disulfide reductases involved in a wide range of biochemical pathways in various biological systems, and also implicated in numerous biotechnological applications. Plants uniquely synthesize an array of thioredoxins targeted to different cell compartments, for example chloroplastic f- and m-type thioredoxins involved in regulation of the Calvin-Benson cycle. The cytosolic h-type thioredoxins act as key regulators of seed germination and are recycled by NADPH-dependent thioredoxin reductase. The present review on thioredoxin h systems in plant seeds focuses on occurrence, reaction mechanisms, specificity, target protein identification, three-dimensional structure and various applications. The aim is to provide a general background as well as an update covering the most recent findings. Abstract Background & aims: Epithelial cells are joined by tight junctions (TJs) to form a cell sheet. In the stomach, epithelial cell sheet forms an essential barrier against gastric material, including gastric acid. Although the decreased expression of stomach-type claudin-18 (stCldn18), a TJ protein, is generally observed in human gastritis and gastric cancer, its pathological roles are not fully understood. We previously reported that mice lacking stCldn18 (stCldn18-/-) exhibit gastric acid leakage through TJs, which induces active gastritis at a young age. Here, we examined the gastric pathologies in mice after long-term stCldn18 deficiency.
Methods: The gastric pathologies in stCldn18-/- mice were sequentially analyzed from youth to old age, and compared to those in humans. To examine the relationship between stCldn18 deficiency-induced gastric pathologies and Wnt-dependent tumorigenesis, we generated Wnt1-overexpressing stCldn18-/- mice.
Results: StCldn18-/- mice developed chronic active gastritis at middle age, with expression of the chemoattractant CCL28. At old age, 20-30% of these mice developed gastric tumors with CXCL5 expression, indicative of EMT. In this process, spasmolytic polypeptide-expressing metaplasia (SPEM) cells appeared. Increased expressions of CD44-variants, TLR2, and CXCL5 indicated age-dependent changes in cell characteristics. Some features of the stCldn18-/- mouse gastric tumorigenesis resembled H pylori-infection-related human carcinogenesis. The gastric tumorigenesis was accelerated in Wnt1-overexpressing stCldn18-/- mice, indicating that Wnt is involved in the stCldn18-/- mouse gastric tumorigenesis.
Conclusions: StCldn18 deficiency induced gastric tumorigenesis in mice without H pylori infection. Our findings revealed that several signaling networks, including the cytokine-, stemness-, and Wnt-signaling pathways, may be activated under the stCldn18-deficiency-induced chronic active gastritis to accelerate the gastric tumorigenesis.

Abstract Aim: To determine the association between sleep and fatigue in nurses who are working in a two-shift system, including 16 h night shifts.
Methods: Sixty-one nurses were assessed on their sleeping and napping over 9 days, using actigraphy and a sleep diary. Work-related feelings of fatigue were measured by using the "Jikaku-sho shirabe" questionnaire and the Cumulative Fatigue Symptoms Index.
Results: The main night-time sleep started after 00:00 hours in half of the participants and the average start and end times were significantly delayed among the participants in their 20s, compared to those in their 40s . Although ~90% of the participants napped during and/or after a night shift, only 50.8% napped for >2 h during their shift and 32.8% napped in the morning after a night shift. In the high-fatigue group, significantly more nurses went to sleep after 00:25 hours than before 00:26 hours the night after a night shift. Furthermore, those nurses who napped for >2 h during their night shift exhibited a significantly lower rate of some cumulative fatigue symptoms, compared to those who did not. In addition, a combination of napping in the morning after a night shift and beginning the following night-time sleep before 00:26 hours were associated with a significant decrease in fatigue symptoms.
Conclusions: Naps at an appropriate time and of an appropriate duration, along with the practice of beginning the night-time sleep early after a night shift, might relieve cumulative mental fatigue in nurses who are working 16 h night shifts.

Abstract Background: The SIOPEL-4 study has demonstrated that dose-dense cisplatin-based chemotherapy dramatically improves outcome in children with high-risk hepatoblastoma in western countries. However, the feasibility and safety of this regimen have not been clarified in Japanese patients.
Methods: A pilot study, JPLT3-H, was designed to evaluate the safety profile of the SIOPEL-4 regimen in Japanese children with newly diagnosed hepatoblastoma with either metastatic disease or low alpha-fetoprotein.
Results: A total of 15 patients (three female) were enrolled. Median age was 2 years (range, 0-14). Three patients were PRETEXT II (where PRETEXT is PRETreatment EXTent of disease), six PRETEXT III, and six PRETEXT IV. All patients had lung metastasis, none had low alpha-fetoprotein. Eight patients completed the prescribed treatment, and seven patients discontinued therapy prematurely, four due to progressive disease and three due to causes other than severe toxicity. Grade 4 neutropenia was documented in most patients in preoperative cycles A1-3 (11/15 in A1, 9/11 in A2, and 7/11 in A3) and in all considering all cycles. Grade 3-4 thrombocytopenia and grade 3 anemia were also frequently observed. Patients experienced several episodes of grade 3 febrile neutropenia, but none had grade 4 febrile neutropenia or severe infections. One patient had grade 3 heart failure only in the first cycle. Other grade 3 or 4 toxicities were hypomagnesemia, anorexia, nausea, mucositis, liver enzyme elevation, fever, infection, and fatigue. There were no unexpected severe toxicities.
Conclusion: The toxicity profile of JPLT3-H was comparable to that of SIOPEL-4. Dose-dense cisplatin-based chemotherapy may be feasible among Japanese patients with high-risk hepatoblastoma.
