Abstract In the current work, a novel curcumin-modified magnetic graphene oxide nanocomposite was synthesised through a facile method and the loading of Trichostatin A as an anticancer drug was evaluated. D-μSPE method coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC-DAD) successfully applied to determine the target analyte. The proper synthesis of the nanocomposite was investigated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and vibrating sample magnetometry. The Taguchi statistical design was used to investigate the impact of five operating variables. The results for signal/noise ratio (S/N) and analysis of variance showed that the MG-curcumin/TSA ratio was the most significant factor while the solution pH was the least significant variable. In addition, the optimum operating conditions were obtained and adsorption isotherms were also studied. The optimised parameters were employed to perform extraction of the TSA from real samples. Good linearity (with r ² = 0.9950) was shown for TSA concentrations from 5.0 to 1000.0 ng mL⁻¹. Moreover, detection limit (0.70 ng mL⁻¹), limit of quantification (2.51 ng mL⁻¹), Inter-day and intra-day precision (n = 5, 3.2%, and 5.0%) were achieved for the method.

Abstract Background: Obesity seems to be a critical issue nowadays because of its high prevalence and its adverse effects on health. There is some evidence indicating the relationship between obesity and lower serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration. The aim of the present study was to examine serum 25(OH)D status of obese and non-obese Iranian children and compare their therapeutic response with identical oral vitamin D3 treatment.
Methods: In a non-randomized clinical trial, serum 25(OH)D level of 45 obese and 45 non-obese Iranian children aged 2-14 years was measured. Those with serum 25(OH)D status <30 ng/ml (73 cases) were treated with one pearl of vitamin D3 (50 000 International Units) once a week for 6 weeks. Serum vitamin D was measured once more 2 weeks after treatment.
    Results: The frequency of hypovitaminosis D was 43/45 (95.6%) in obese and 30/45 (66.7%) in non-obese children at baseline (p < 0.001). After treatment of 73 cases (43 obese, 30 non-obese), the above percentages were decreased to 24/43 (55.8%) and 1/30 (3.3%), respectively (p < 0.001).
Conclusion: Our study demonstrated a high frequency of vitamin D deficiency among Iranian children, particularly the obese ones. Moreover, low therapeutic response in the obese group is witnessed.

Abstract In this paper, we propose a parallel shooting algorithm for solving nonlinear model predictive control problems using sequential quadratic programming. This algorithm is built on a two-phase approach where we first test and assess sequential convergence over many initial trajectories in parallel. However, if none converge, the algorithm starts varying the Newton step size in parallel instead. Through this parallel shooting approach, it is expected that the number of iterations to converge to an optimal solution can be decreased. Furthermore, the algorithm can be further expanded and accelerated by implementing it on GPUs. We illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed Parallel Shooting Sequential Quadratic Programming (PS-SQP) method in some benchmark examples for nonlinear model predictive control. The developed PS-SQP parallel solver converges faster on average and especially when significant nonlinear behaviour is excited in the NMPC horizon.

Abstract Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients with severe disease had a high mortality rate. It's imperative to identify risk factors associated with disease progression and prognosis. Immune responses played an important role in the host's defense against the virus. We studied the dynamics of peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) in relation to the clinical outcome in COVID-19 patients in intensive care unit (ICU).
Design: This cohort included 342 COVID-19 patients who were admitted to ICU between February 1 and May 30, 2020, with 178 having follow-up PBL analysis. The patients were divided into a group that survived and an expired group. PBL analysis was performed by flow cytometry.
Results: At time of initial flow analysis, there were no statistically significant differences in lymphocyte, T-cell and subsets, B-cell or natural killer (NK) cell counts between the 2 groups. However, during the ICU course, the surviving group demonstrated a full recovery of CD3+ T-cells, CD4+ T-cells, and CD8+ T-cells, with no significant change in B-cells, and a slight upward trend in NK-cells. In contrast, the expired group showed no recovery in T-cells (and subsets) and no significant changes in B-cells and NK-cells. We identified the earliest time points and cut-off values for T-cell subsets that predict clinical outcomes.
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that evaluation of PBL in COVID-19 patients could be valuable in the study of the immune responses to the disease and the prognostication of outcome.

Abstract This paper reports on a study on improving the health and fitness of office workers in Iran using a comprehensive model. The research design was a randomized controlled trial involving 294 employees. The intervention was a 6-month program to promote physical activity. The primary outcome measure was their scores on the physical activity (PA) index recorded at 3 and 6 months. A statistically significantly increase in PA was found in the intervention group over the control group. In addition, the mean values of related health and physiological indices of the intervention group demonstrated a statistically significant increase compared to the control group. The conclusions of this study support research findings in multiple countries, that the physical activity and health of office workers can be improved in a short period.

Abstract Achieving high photocatalytic activity with the lowest possible platinum (Pt) consumption is crucial for reducing the cost of Pt-based cocatalysts and enabling large-scale applications. Bimetallic Ni-Pt cocatalysts exhibit excellent photocatalytic performance and are considered one of the most promising photocatalysts capable of replacing pure Pt for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). However, the synergistic photocatalytic mechanism between bimetallic Ni-Pt cocatalysts needs to be further investigated. Herein, we deposit highly dispersed Ni-Pt bimetallic cocatalysts on the surface of TiO

Abstract High risk of acute morbidities and even mortality from expanding the antibiotics resistant infectious wounds force indefinite efforts for development of high performance wound-healing materials. Herein, we design a procedure to fabricate a hyaluronic acid (HA)-based hydrogel to conjugate curcumin (Gel-H.P.Cur). The highlight of this work is to provide a favorite condition for capturing curcumin while protecting its structure and intensifying its activities because of the synchronization with HA. Accordingly, HA as a major component of dermis with a critical role in establishing skin health, could fortify the wound healing property as well as antibacterial activity of the hydrogel. Gel-H.P.Cur showed antibacterial properties against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa), which were examined by bactericidal efficiency, disk diffusion, anti-biofilm, and pyocyanin production assays. The effects of Gel-H.P.Cur on the inhibition of quorum sensing (QS) regulatory genes that contribute to expanding bacteria in the injured place was also significant. In addition, Gel-H.P.Cur showed high potential to heal the cutaneous wounds on the mouse excisional wound model with repairing histopathological damages rapidly and without scar. Taken together, the results strongly support Gel-H.P.Cur as a multipotent biomaterial for medical applications regarding the treatment of chronic, infected, and dehiscent wounds.

Results: Samples cured with Optilux exhibited the highest and those cured with LED.D exhibited the lowest microhardness (
Conclusions: Light curing with polywave light-emitting diode (LED) yielded results between or statistically similar to those of quartz-tungsten-halogen and monowave LED in the microhardness and flexural strength of both A2 and bleach shades of resin composites. However, the brands of light-curing devices showed significant differences in color stability.
