    Abstract China, the world leader in automobile production and sales, confronts the challenge of transportation emissions, which account for roughly 10% of its total carbon emissions. This study, utilizing real-world vehicle data from three major Chinese cities, assesses the impact of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) on air quality. Our analysis reveals that BEVs, when replacing gasoline vehicles in their operational phase, significantly reduce emissions, with reductions ranging from 8.72 to 85.71 kg of CO

    Abstract Abstract China, the world leader in automobile production and sales, confronts the challenge of transportation emissions, which account for roughly 10% of its total carbon emissions. This study, utilizing real-world vehicle data from three major Chinese cities, assesses the impact of Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) on air quality. Our analysis reveals that BEVs, when replacing gasoline vehicles in their operational phase, significantly reduce emissions, with reductions ranging from 8.72 to 85.71 kg of CO2 per vehicle monthly. The average monthly reduction rate is 9.47%, though this effect is less pronounced during winter. Advanced BEVs, characterized by higher efficiency and newer technology, exhibit greater emission reduction benefits. While private BEVs generally contribute positively to environmental outcomes, taxi BEVs, due to their intensive usage patterns, show less environmental advantage and may sometimes worsen air quality. Looking ahead, we project substantial emission reductions from the replacement of gasoline vehicles with electric alternatives over the next decade. Policymakers are urged to adopt proactive measures, focusing on promoting medium to large electric vehicles and fostering the use of private and ride-hailing electric vehicles.

    Abstract Osteocytes are considered to be nonproliferative cells that are terminally differentiated from osteoblasts. Osteoblasts embedded in the bone extracellular matrix (osteoid) express the Pdpn gene to form cellular dendrites and transform into preosteocytes. Later, preosteocytes express the Dmp1 gene to promote matrix mineralization and thereby transform into mature osteocytes.This process is called osteocytogenesis. IDG-SW3 is a well-known cell line for in vitro studies of osteocytogenesis. Many previous methods have used collagen I as the main or the only component of the culturing matrix. However, in addition to collagen I, the osteoid also contains a ground substance, which is an important component in promoting cellular growth, adhesion, and migration. In addition, the matrix substance is transparent, which increases the transparency of the collagen I-formed gel and, thus, aids the exploration of dendrite formation through imaging techniques. Thus, this paper details a protocol to establish a 3D gel using an extracellular matrix along with collagen I for IDG-SW3 survival. In this work, dendrite formation and gene expression were analyzed during osteocytogenesis. After 7 days of osteogenic culture, an extensive dendrite network was clearly observed under a fluorescence confocal microscope. Real-time PCR showed that the mRNA levels of Pdpn and Dmp1 continually increased for 3 weeks. At week 4, the stereomicroscope revealed an opaque gel filled with mineral particles, consistent with the X-ray fluorescence (XRF) assay. These results indicate that this culture matrix successfully facilitates the transition from osteoblasts to mature osteocytes.

    Abstract Different intensities of UV-A (6, 12, 18 μmol·m −2 s −1 ) were applied in a plant factory to evaluate the combined influences of supplemental UV-A and red and blue light (Red:Blue = 1:1 at PPFD of 250 μmol·m −2 s −1 ) on the biomass, antioxidant activity and phytochemical accumulation of kale. Supplemental UV-A treatments (T1: 6 μmol·m −2 s −1 , T2: 12 μmol·m −2 s −1 and T3: 18 μmol·m −2 s −1 ) resulted in higher moisture content, higher pigment content, and greater leaf area of kale while T2 reached its highest point. T2 treatment positively enhanced the antioxidant capacity, increased the contents of soluble protein, soluble sugar and reduced the nitrate content. T1 treatment markedly increased the content of aliphatic glucosinolate (GSL), whereas T2 treatment highly increased the contents of indolic GSL and total GSL. Genes related to GSL biosynthesis were down-regulated in CK and T3 treatments, while a majority of them were greatly up-regulated by T1 and T2. Hence, supplemental 12 μmol·m −2 s −1 UV-A might be a promising strategy to enhance the growth and quality of kale in a plant factory.

    Abstract Controlling agents remotely with deep reinforcement learning~(DRL) in the real world is yet to come. One crucial stepping stone is to devise RL algorithms that are robust in the face of dropped information from corrupted communication or malfunctioning sensors. Typical RL methods usually require considerable online interaction data that are costly and unsafe to collect in the real world. Furthermore, when applying to the frame dropping scenarios, they perform unsatisfactorily even with moderate drop rates. To address these issues, we propose Decision Transformer under Random Frame Dropping~(DeFog), an offline RL algorithm that enables agents to act robustly in frame dropping scenarios without online interaction. DeFog first randomly masks out data in the offline datasets and explicitly adds the time span of frame dropping as inputs. After that, a finetuning stage on the same offline dataset with a higher mask rate would further boost the performance. Empirical results show that DeFog outperforms strong baselines under severe frame drop rates like 90\%, while maintaining similar returns under non-frame-dropping conditions in the regular MuJoCo control benchmarks and the Atari environments. Our approach offers a robust and deployable solution for controlling agents in real-world environments with limited or unreliable data.

    Abstract To explore the effect of different nutrient-solution depths on the growth and phytochemicals accumulation of kale, three different nutrient-solution depth treatments (De-1: 1 cm, De-2: 2 cm, and De-3: 3 cm) were applied in the plant factory with artificial lighting. The maximum levels of plant height, stem diameter, total leaf area, total root length, and root surface area as well as fresh and dry weight of the shoot and root were all noted in De-2 at 24 days after treatment. Low nutrient-solution depth treatments (De-1 and De-2) were beneficial for total chlorophyll accumulation and nutrient ions uptake (N, P, K, Ca, S, and Zn). However, there were no obvious differences in DPPH and FRAP as well as contents of total polyphenols and flavonoids. In high nutrient-solution depth treatment (De-3), the contents of carotenoid, soluble sugars, and vitamin C were higher than those in De-1 and De-2. The contents of total glucosinolates (GLs), aliphatic GLs, and indole GLs significantly increased in kale under De-3. Higher contents of reactive oxygen species (ROS), hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂), oxalate oxidase (OXO), and proline were observed in kale roots under De-2 and De-3. Overall, 2 cm of nutrient-solution depth could be used to promote kale growth, and 3 cm may represent a potential approach for improving kale quality in a plant factory.

    Abstract The nutritional quality and biomass of various sprouts can be enhanced by Zn and red-blue light, especially the Brassica sprouts. However, the combined effects of this two on sprouts are rarely reported. In this study, different Zn concentrations (0, 1.74, 3.48, 10.43 and 17.39 mM) were combined with two ratios of red-blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) (R: B = 1:2, 1R2B; R: B = 2:1, 2R1B, at 70 μmol m⁻² s⁻¹ PPFD, 14 h/10 h, light/dark) to investigate their mutual effects on the growth, mineral elements, and nutritional quality in flowering Chinese cabbage sprouts (FCCS). Fresh weight, dry weight, contents of organic Zn, soluble sugar, vitamin C, total flavonoids, total polyphenol, FRAP (ferric ion-reducing antioxidant power) and DPPH (radical inhibition percentage of 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) were significantly increased by Zn supplement (10.43 and 17.39 mM) and 2R1B, while hypocotyl length and moisture content were decreased remarkably by Zn supplement. Total glucosinolates contents in the sprouts increased dramatically under 2R1B compared with 1R2B, while photosynthetic pigments contents decreased. Heat map and principal component analysis showed that 2R1B + 17.39 mM Zn was the optimal treatment for the accumulation of biomass and health-promoting compound in FCCS, suggesting that a suitable combination of light quality and Zn supplement might be beneficial to zinc-biofortified FCCS production.

    Abstract The activation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) signaling has promising implications for the treatment of bone diseases such as osteoporosis and skeletal fractures. However, the effects of manipulating HIF-1α pathway on bone micro-structure and remodeling should be fully studied before the clinical application of therapeutics that interfere with the HIF-1α pathway. In this study, we found that osteocyte-specific HIF-1α pathway had critical role in manipulating bone mass accrual, bone material properties and micro-structures, including bone mineralization, bone collagen fiber formation, osteocyte/canalicular network, and bone remodeling. In addition, our results suggest that osteocyte-specific HIF-1α pathway regulates bone micro-structure and remodeling via impairing osteocyte differentiation and maturation.
