Abstract Patients with urolithiasis, particularly hypercalciuria, may have reduced bone mineral density (BMD). There are numerous risk factors contributing to reduction of BMD such as advanced age, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, low calcium intake, etc. The aim of our study was to investigate the association of lifestyle risk factors and daily intake of milk and dairy products with determinants of BMD in a group of recurrent calcium stone formers (RSF) compared with healthy subjects (HS). The study was carried out at the Department of Mineral Research, Faculty of Medicine in Osijek, Croatia. The study included 144 subjects, i.e. 56 RSF and 78 HS. BMD was assessed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry. A standard self-reported questionnaire was used to collect data on lifestyle risk factors. Current dietary intake was assessed by personal interview that included questions about milk and dairy product intake. Low BMD was observed in 44.64% of RSF and 35.90% of HS. RSF consumed significantly less milk and dairy products than HS. Calcium restriction in dietary recommendations might be unnecessary due to the impact on bone mineral loss in RSF and dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry should be included in the routine evaluation of RSF.

Abstract Alcoholics Anonymous is, according to the Program's basic documents, a spiritual program - especially regarding Steps 2-3, 5-7, and 11-12. This paper reviews the history of the Program with emphasis on its spiritual background, as well as on the roots of the spiritual side of the program, and showing the spiritual accents in the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous. The paper also considers the Christian background of the movement and, more broadly, explores the connection of AA founders William (Bill) Wilson and Dr. Robert (Bob) Smith with several Catholic people, such as Edward (Ed) Dowling, SJ, and John C. Ford, SJ, and indicates some points of contact between the Program and Ignatian spirituality. The paper illustrates the pioneering role of the Alcoholics Anonymous program in integrating spirituality into the process of recovery from and treatment of addictions, an integration that just recently has been embraced by modern psychotherapy and psychiatry. The paper shows the theoretical and spiritual underpinnings of the Program in the religious context. The paper illustrates the orientation of the Program in assisting addicts to integrate into their recovery their own spirituality, a clearer image of God, and personal spiritual and religious progress.

Abstract The Jurassic–Cretaceous dolomites, Adriatic platform, Croatia resulted from climate-influenced post-depositional reflux dolomitization (as opposed to synsedimentary peritidal- and deeper burial dolomitization), and subsequent stabilization within a Mesozoic, “calcite sea” isolated platform. The dolomites are stratiform (10 to 200m thick), fabric destructive (20 to over 500μm crystals), nonluminescent, and zoned with respect to Ca. Bulk dolomites have low Mn (10 to 30ppm), moderate Sr (60 to over 200ppm), positive δ13C and δ18O values, only moderate ordering (0.25 to 0.6) and single-phase fluid inclusions (temperatures <50°C). High-Ca dolomite (HCD; ~53 to ~59mol% Ca; δ18O+1 to >+3‰ VPDB and Sr>100ppm) composes most Jurassic and 40% of Cretaceous dolomites, making up turbid dolomite cores and initial clear dolomite rims. A first generation of low-Ca dolomite (LCD-1; 50 to 53mol% Ca; δ18O+1 to >+3‰ VPDB; 100–180ppm Sr) forms cement and variably replaces (stabilizes) earlier HCD cores. HCD and LCD-1 formed in refluxing marine-dominated pore waters under semi-arid climate (<300m depth, 30 to ~40°C). 87/86Sr values of the HCD and LCD-1 dominantly were controlled by the refluxing seawater 87/86Sr with minor addition of 87/86Sr from ascending cooling fluids. During maturation of HCD, Sr loss was greatest from least stable, more calcic HCD (>55mol%) phases. A second generation of much younger, low-Ca dolomite (LCD-2; fracture-associated, more negative δ18O from −1.4 to +1‰ VPDB, Sr <100ppm, enriched in radiogenic 87Sr) overgrows and variably replaces earlier Cretaceous dolomites. It formed during Eocene–Oligocene deformation and uplift to <1km burial depths (<50°C) from synorogenic, mixed marine–meteoric pore fluids, circulating via faults, fractures and local permeable zones. Porosity loss by dolomite cementation coupled with localized, rapid Cenozoic uplift, variably arrested stabilization to LCD.

Abstract We performed QTL mapping in testcrosses of maize population IBMSyn4 for three grain quality traits: oil and protein contents and test weight. 191 phenotyped and genotyped lines were used as a training set while 85 genotyped only lines comprised a validation set used to calculate best linear unbiased predictions (BLUP), making a total of 276 phenotypes for the QTL analysis. 92000 filtered Genotyping-By-Sequencing (GBS) SNP markers were used to calculate BLUPs, while a set of 2178 genetically mapped SSRs was used in QTL analysis. By simple QTL scan, we scored several minor effect QTLs: one for oil content (chromosome 1), one for protein content (chromosome 10) and four for test weight (chromosomes 1, 3, 5 and 10). QTLs associated with test weight were found to be additive, and 18.25% of phenotypic variance was explained by their joint effect. Only one QTL for test weight was found to be significant in composite interval mapping and it was mapped on chromosome 5. This QTL accounted for 9.97% of phenotypic variance. QTLs detected in this study represent monitoring of commercially most successful elite maize germplasm for grain quality traits.

Abstract Immune-mediated thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) is a thrombotic microangiopathy characterized by an acquired ADAMTS13 deficiency as a result of the presence of an antibody inhibitor of ADAMTS13 leading to the formation of ultralarge von Willebrand multimers. Treatment of iTTP includes plasma exchange, high-dose glucocorticoids, rituximab, and, more recently, caplacizumab, to prevent the development of exacerbations. There is the risk of both relapse and long-term complications that include neurocognitive deficits and cardiovascular events that occur in patients in remission after recovery from an acute iTTP episode. Data on the risk factors for the development of these complications, the appropriate screening, and treatment are limited due to the paucity of research. This article is a review of the current understanding on the risk factors for exacerbation, relapse, and long-term complications of iTTP and discusses an approach to observing patients with iTTP after hospital discharge and during the long-term follow-up in the outpatient setting.

Abstract Racial and ethnic representativeness in clinical trials is crucial to mitigate outcomes disparities, however, diversity among hemophilia trials is unknown. The aim of this study is to examine the reporting and representation of race and ethnicity in trials of people with hemophilia (PwH). In this cross-sectional study, the clinicaltrials.gov database was queried in April 2023 for interventional clinical trials involving PwH between 2007-2022. The distribution of participants (observed) was compared with expected proportions based on United States (US) hemophilia treatment center (HTC) and country-specific census data with observed-to-expected ratios (OER). Of 129 trials included, 94.6% were industry sponsored, with a mean of 62 participants and mean age of 26.8 years. Overall, 52.0% (n=66) of trials reported data on race and ethnicity, increasing from 13.9% in 2007-2012 to 22.5% in 2013-2016 to 100% in 2017-2022 (p-value=.001). Among these 66 trials, 65.8%, 22.8%, 5.1%, 3.9% of participants were White, Asian, Hispanic, and Black, respectively. OERs were 10-20% significantly lower for White participants vs US HTC, and US, United Kingdom (UK), and Canadian census populations and approximately 75% lower for Black or Hispanic participants when compared to US HTC and US census population. OERs for Asian participants were 1.6 to 3 times higher than Canada, US and UK census populations. The reporting of race and ethnicity in hemophilia trials has drastically improved, however, Black and Hispanic PwH remain especially underrepresented. To address these disparities, stakeholders across the clinical trial enterprise need to implement strategies to ensure equitable participation.

Abstract COVID-19 has revealed the policy capacity of some governance institutions, both resilience and vulnerability. Hence, this circumstance has demanded public administration scholars and practitioners to rethink the existing governance practices, particularly in making effective crisis-related policies. This paper reviewed primary and secondary studies exploring the application of policy capacity competencies in facilitating COVID-19 handling in Asia. In achieving so, we did a systematic literature review of relevant studies published between January and October 2020. Applying the agreed search term to several databases, we found 2541 studies, while merely 30 were included for review. Findings from the studies are predominantly closely linked to operational capacity (

Abstract Introduction: People with haemophilia's life expectancies have improved over time. Whether progress has been experienced equitably is unknown.
Aim: To examine recorded haemophilia death (rHD) rates according to race and ethnicity in the United States (US).
Methods: In this cohort study, rHDs were examined with US National Vital Statistics' 1999-2020 Multiple Cause-of-Death data. rHD was defined as having a haemophilia A (D66) or B (D67) ICD-10 code in the death certificate (underlying or multiple causes of death). Age-adjusted rHD rates were compared with age-adjusted rate ratios (aRR) and 95% Confidence Intervals (CI).
Results: There were 3115 rHDs in males with an rHD rate of 0.98 per 1 million males. Between 1999 and 2020, rHD rates declined by 46% in NH (Non-Hispanic) White, 44% in NH Black (aRR = 0.56, 95%CI 0.43, 0.74), and 42% in Hispanic (aRR = 0.58, 95%CI 0.39, 0.88) males. However, rHD rates remained higher and were on average 30% greater in NH Black versus NH White males (aRR = 1.30 95% CI 1.16, 1.46). Among males with rHD, the median age at death rose from 54.5 to 65.5 years between 1999 and 2020 and was 12 years lower in NH Black (56 years) versus NH White (68 years) males in 2010-2020. There were 930 females with rHD, with an age-adjusted rate of 0.22 per 1 million females, which was consistent between 1999 and 2020.
Conclusion: Reported haemophilia-death rates improved in males across all race/ethnicities, but rates were higher Black versus White males. Given the inherent limitations of the current study's data source, further investigation of survival rates and disparities in haemophilia are needed.
