Abstract Amid the pandemic of violence against women, it is imperative to identify the contributing factors to lethal forms of violence against them. Femicides are the result of the intersection of variables that increase women's vulnerability. This study seeks to estimate the risk factors associated with death due to femicide in Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. We considered sociodemographic variables, employment, exposure to violence, and psychoactive substance use. Our analysis employed conditional logistic regression. Using a case-control study design, we paired femicide cases with female controls from the general population, matching them by age and human development index, with a ratio of four controls per case. We analyzed 24 femicide cases and 96 controls. Women in the femicide group had lower educational attainment and were more likely to originate from outside the state of São Paulo. They predominantly held informal jobs, had experienced physical violence from intimate partners within the last 30 days, and exhibited higher alcohol, crack, and antidepressant consumption. Women in the femicide group reported more exposure to threats compared to those in the control group. Two variables significantly explained the likelihood of being a femicide case: a history of intimate partner violence in the last 30 days (OR 73.3, 95% CI: 8.1 to 661.7) and originating from outside the state of São Paulo (OR 6.5, 95% CI: 1.7 to 25.2). In this text, we discuss the findings and methodological challenges encountered in researching lethal violence against women.

Abstract Background: Parathyroid carcinoma accounts for <1% of cases of primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). This rare condition may present with severe hypercalcemia and bone complications such as osteoclastomas and pathologic fractures. Here, we present a rare condition of panhypopituitarism resulting from an osteoclastoma in the sphenoid bone that invaded the pituitary fossa due to parathyroid carcinoma.
Conclusion: This case illustrates an unusual presentation of parathyroid carcinoma, in which an osteoclastoma of the sphenoid bone caused hypopituitarism.

Abstract Background: Neonatal mortality reduction is a global goal, but its factors are seldom studied in most resource-constrained settings. This is the first study conducted to identify the factors affecting perinatal and neonatal deaths in Sao Tome & Principe (STP), the smallest Central Africa country.
Methods: Institution-based prospective cohort study conducted at Hospital Dr. Ayres Menezes. Maternal-neonate dyads enrolled were followed up after the 28th day of life (
Results: The mean gestational age of the death-outcome and alive-outcome groups was 36 (SD = 4.8) and 39 (SD = 1.4) weeks, respectively. Death-outcome group (
Conclusion: Factors such as having a high-risk pregnancy score, meconium-stained amniotic fluid, prolonged rupture of membranes, being transferred from another unit, and an instrumental-assisted vaginal delivery increased 4- to 9-fold the risk of stillbirth and neonatal deaths. Thus, avoiding delays in prompt intrapartum care is a key strategy to implement in Sao Tome & Principe.

Abstract This study evaluates gleaning exclusion as an approach for the rehabilitation of seagrass ecosystems and as an option for important intertidal resource management that contributes to the social well-being of communities. The monitoring of seagrass plant and invertebrate recovery after the implementation of gleaning exclusion was conducted over 50 plots of 5 m × 5 m each, which were settled in the seagrass meadow of NW Maputo Bay, Mozambique. The exclusion experiment was designed to compensate for the important loss of seagrass in the area due to gleaning activity characterized mainly by digging and revolving sediments to collect mostly clams. Results showed that, in general, seagrass plant shoot density started having significant positive recovery after five months: three months for Halophila ovalis , five months for Halodule uninvervis , and much more time (>six months) for the IUCN Red List endangered Zostera capensis . For invertebrates, 194 individual invertebrates were collected belonging to 13 species. Solen cylindraceus was the most dominant edible invertebrate species in the local community, and Dosinia hepatica for non-edible species. The result of the experiment showed a positive recovery in the abundance and diversity of invertebrates. The results support previous findings, suggesting that the installation of a no-take zone can enhance the health of an ecosystem. Therefore, to limit the violation and conflicts of the no-take zones, the creation of alternative activities for harvesters and the flexibility of restrictions are vital. Further investigation should be considered to obtain an effective management of the zones, including documentation of species, gleaning practices, and an effective restoration of seagrass meadows.

Abstract Introduction Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, a prevalent sexually transmitted disease, affects the majority of sexually active individuals at least once in their lifetime. Cervical cancer stands as a significant contributor to mortality among women. Cervical cancer screening (CCS) and HPV vaccination are recent, with few studies about their impact on the prevalence of HPV types. The emergence of novel predominant pathogen strains can be driven by vaccine-induced pathogen strain replacement, thereby enhancing and altering selection. Objective The aim of the study was to characterize the high-risk (HR) HPV infection in two Portuguese primary care units (PCUs). Materials and methods In this observational, cross-sectional, and descriptive study, we included women aged 25-64 years and registered in two PCUs, who were screened by SiiMA Rastreios (population-based screening management application), and were HR-HPV positive, between August 2015 and May 2018. The results of cervical cancer screening (CCS) can be accessed through the SiiMA Rastreios information system. For data treatment, we used MS Excel (Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, Washington, USA), IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 20 (Released 2011; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, USA), and non-parametric tests. Results In our study, we included 4,614 women aged between 25 and 64 years old. CCS was performed on 24.47%, of whom 39.95% were tested for HR-HPV. The infection rate was 18.85%, and all 14 types of infection were identified. The most common HPV type was 31, followed by 16 and 68. We found HPV other than 16/18 in 84.43%. We found coinfections in 34.1%, with no statistically significant difference by age group. In the 25-34 age group, the incidence of infection was 33.7% vs. 17.54% in the 35-54 age group and 4.55% in the 55-64 age group. HPV16 was the most common infection in the 25-34 age group. In nulliparous women, the most common was HPV31. The relationship between smoking habits and HR-HPV infection was statistically significant, but economic insufficiency was not. Conclusion The infection incidence in this study was slightly higher than in the 2011 national study. Statistically, the infection rate was significantly higher in the younger age groups. The most frequent type varied from the national and international study results. This may be due to regional differences in HPV infection, changes in the pattern of incidence, or the effect of vaccination. The HPV pattern may be changing, so the scientific community must keep updated to develop increasingly efficient screening and vaccination programs.

Abstract Introduction: Adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) are exposed to several challenges and risk factors, linked to historical legacies. Sub-Saharan Africa has one of the highest rates of poverty and inequality in the world, is one of the regions most negatively affected by climate change, performs poorly on many health measures, and has high rates of different forms of violence, especially gender-based violence. These contextual challenges impact adolescent mental health outcomes, preventing them to access resilience-enabling pathways that support positive outcomes despite adversity. This study aimed to contribute to knowledge generation on resilience of young people in the understudied SSA region by investigating which variables directly (or indirectly) affect the resilience of adolescents.
Methods: Purposive sampling was used to collect quantitative survey data from 3,312 adolescents (females = 1,818; males = 1,494) between the ages of 12 and 20 years, participating in interventions implemented by a non-governmental organization, the Regional Psychosocial Support Initiative. Data were collected in Angola (385, 11.6%), Eswatini (128, 3.9%), Kenya (390, 11.8%), Lesotho (349, 10.5%), Mozambique (478, 14.4%), Namibia (296, 8.9%), South Africa (771, 23.3%), Uganda (201, 6.1%), and Zambia (314, 9.5%). The survey collected data on socio-demographic status, resilience (CYRM-R), depression (PHQ-9), self-esteem (Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale) and feelings of safety (self-developed scale). Mental health was defined as lower levels of depression, higher levels of self-esteem and higher levels of feeling safe. A mediation analysis was conducted to investigate the relationship between the predictors (the socio-demographic variables) and the output (resilience), with the mediators being depression, self-esteem and feeling safe (which all link to mental health).
Results: This study contributes to a gap in knowledge on country-level comparative evidence on significant predictors that impact resilience outcomes (directly or indirectly) for adolescents in sub-Saharan African countries. The results indicate that, when considering all countries collectively, feeling safe is the only predictor that has a significant direct effect on overall resilience and personal resilience, but not on caregiver resilience. When considering each country separately, feeling safe has a direct effect on overall, personal and caregiver resilience for all countries; but not for South Africa and Mozambique.
Discussion: The results provide evidence on which to craft youth development interventions by measuring mediators (depression, self-esteem and feeling safe) and resilience for adolescents in sub-Saharan Africa. The overall results of the present paper point toward a contextually relevant pathway to supporting their resilience, namely, the need to systemically target the creation and/or strengthening of structures that enable adolescents to feel safe.

Abstract Previous studies on the work-family relationship have analyzed the influence of work-family conflict and work-family enrichment on an individuals' lives, namely on their well-being and health. Besides, attempts have been made to analyze the influence of other aspects of the labor context on this relationship, such as job insecurity. However, few have analyzed this relationship and interaction from a longitudinal perspective. Thus, the main purpose of this study is to analyze the moderating role of job insecurity in the work-family relationship and the perceived health of 373 workers of a Portuguese bank, across time. The results showed a negative influence of work-family conflict on perceived health 5 years after. Also, job insecurity was found to offset the relationship between work-family enrichment and perceived health, acting as a buffer. This research allows for a better understanding of how job insecurity, a characteristic of modern-day employment, can impact workers' quality of life. This paper also refers to some practical implications, in addition to the limitations of the study, and presents suggestions for future research in this context.
