Abstract Background/aim: Acute liver injury is the hallmark of organ failure in sepsis. Enteral nutrition (EN) is an important clinical therapeutic measure in septic patients. However, the therapeutic effect of EN alone is not obvious. Here, we investigated whether octanoic acid (OA)-rich EN alleviated acute liver injury through PPARγ/STAT-1/MyD88 pathway in endotoxemic rats.
Materials and methods: First, rats were randomly divided into four groups: Sham, Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), LPS+EN and LPS+EN+OA groups to investigate the effect of OA-rich EN on LPS-induced acute liver injury in endotoxemic rats. Then rats were randomly divided into five groups: Sham, LPS, LPS+EN+OA, LPS+EN+OA+SR202 (SR) and LPS+ pioglitazone (PI) groups to examine whether OA-rich EN alleviated acute liver injury through the PPARγ/STAT-1/MyD88 pathway. Rats received nutrition support via a gastric tube for 3 days. We evaluated the liver histology, apoptosis, liver enzymes and inflammatory cytokine levels in the liver and serum. PPARγ/STAT-1/MyD88 pathway was also measured.
Results: OA-rich EN inhibited the phosphorylation of STAT-1 and the activity of MyD88 by activating PPARγ and alleviating LPS-induced acute liver injury more effectively than EN alone in endotoxemic rats. The use of SR counteracted the effect of OA-rich EN on acute liver injury. Meanwhile, PI showed effects similar to OA-rich EN in endotoxemic rats.
Conclusion: OA-rich EN alleviated acute liver injury through PPARγ/STAT-1/MyD88 pathway in endotoxemic rats.

Abstract The large scale of the Chinese wooden door market has resulted in a slew of environmental issues that must be addressed. This paper evaluated a solid wood composite door using life cycle assessment (LCA). Field research was used to obtain production data for the wooden door. The production stages were divided into the raw material stage, the transportation stage, the woodworking workshop stage, and the painting workshop stage in order to identify potential environmental improvements and analyze the underlying causes to offer some suggestions for improvement. Four service lives were considered in the use stage, and three disposal methods were considered in the disposal stage to explore their environmental impacts. The functional unit was defined as a solid wood composite door using the "cradle-to-grave" system boundary. Using a 20-year service life as an example, the results revealed that the production stage was the most crucial stage, with a contribution ratio of 49% to 72% to all impact categories, regardless of waste disposal method. The main reasons for this were the production of density boards and the consumption of electricity. By replacing straw-density boards and hydropower, the global warming potential (GWP) was reduced by 46% and 67%, respectively. If a wooden door can be used for 20 years, the use stage will account for 26% to 51% of the environmental impact contribution, owing primarily to wood wax oil. Recycling was recognized as the most environmentally friendly method of waste disposal. This research can be used as a reference for evaluating solid wood composite doors in China as well as providing optimization recommendations for production improvement.

Abstract Objective: Enteral nutrition is the key therapy in septic patients. Different formulas of enteral nutrition have various effects on gastrointestinal sepsis. Therefore, we investigated the effects of enteral nutrition supplemented with octanoic acid on lipopolysaccharide-induced intestinal injury and explored the potential mechanism.
Methods: First, to investigate the effects of enteral nutrition supplemented with octanoic acid on lipopolysaccharide-induced intestinal injury, rats were randomly divided into four groups: sham, lipopolysaccharide, lipopolysaccharide + enteral nutrition, and lipopolysaccharide + enteral nutrition + octanoic acid. Then, to explore whether enteral nutrition supplemented with octanoic acid can prevent lipopolysaccharide-induced intestinal injury via the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ/STAT-1/myeloid differentiation factor 88 pathway, rats were randomly divided into five groups: sham, lipopolysaccharide, lipopolysaccharide + enteral nutrition + octanoic acid, lipopolysaccharide + enteral nutrition + octanoic acid + SR202, and lipopolysaccharide + pioglitazone. All rats received nutritional support for 3 d. We examined the serum levels of inflammatory factors, pathologic changes, goblet cell density, intestinal tight junction protein expression, and the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ/STAT-1/myeloid differentiation factor 88 pathway in the ileum and colon. The effect of octanoic acid on intestinal epithelium injury was also explored in vitro.
Results: Enteral nutrition supplemented with octanoic acid significantly decreased the serum levels of inflammatory factors and prevented intestinal barrier dysfunction compared with enteral nutrition alone (P < 0.05). Inhibiting the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ/STAT-1/myeloid differentiation factor 88 pathway exacerbated effects of enteral nutrition supplemented with octanoic acid on intestinal injury (P < 0.05). Activation of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ/STAT-1/myeloid differentiation factor 88 pathway prevented intestinal injury (P < 0.05). Octanoic acid also exerted a similar effect on intestinal epithelium injury in vitro.
Conclusions: Enteral nutrition supplemented with octanoic acid prevents lipopolysaccharide-induced intestinal injury via the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ/STAT-1/myeloid differentiation factor 88 pathway.

Abstract Objective: Embryonic interferon-tau (IFNT) and progesterone affect expression of interferon-stimulated genes (ISGs), progesterone receptor (PGR) and progesterone-induced blocking factor (PIBF) in the ovine thyroid.
Methods: Thyroids of ewes were sampled at day 16 of nonpregnancy, days 13, 16 and 25 of pregnancy, and RT-qPCR assay, western blot and immunohistochemistry were used to detect expression of ISGs, PGR and PIBF.
Results: Free ISG15 protein was undetected, but ISG15 conjugated proteins upregulated at day 16 of pregnancy, and expression levels of ISG15 conjugated proteins, PGR isoform (70 kDa), PIBF, interferon-gamma-inducible protein 10 and myxovirusresistance protein 1 peaked, but expression level of signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 was the lowest at day 16 of pregnancy. In addition, the expression levels of PGR isoform (70 kDa) and STAT1 decreased, but levels of PGR isoform (43 kDa), 2',5'-oligoadenylate synthetase, IP-10 and MX1 increased at day 25 of pregnancy comparing with day 16 of the estrous cycle.
Conclusion: Early pregnancy affects expression of ISGs, PGR and PIBF in maternal thyroid through IFNT and progesterone, which may regulate thyroid autoimmunity and thyroid hormone secretion in ewes.
