Abstract Case: We describe an adult patient with bilateral Sprengel deformity (BSD) with bilateral omovertebral bone and thoracic spinal failure of segmentation (T2-T4) successfully surgically treated only at 19-year-old. After resection of the bilateral omovertebral bone and simultaneous relocation of the scapula, disabilities of the arm, shoulder, and hand score improved from 26.7 preoperatively to 2.5 at the 3-year follow-up.
Conclusion: The surgical treatment of Sprengel deformity is typically recommended between 3 and 7 years of age when significant shoulder impairment and/or severe cosmetic concerns are present. The authors were able to achieve a successful surgical outcome in a patient with BSD despite an unusual late presentation.

Abstract In this study, we aimed to assess sprinting using a developed instrument encompassing an inertial measurement unit (IMU) in order to analyze athlete performance during the sprint, as well as to determine the number of steps, ground contact time, flight time, and step time using a high-speed camera as a reference. Furthermore, we correlated the acceleration components (XYZ) and acceleration ratio with the performance achieved in each split time obtained using photocells. Six athletes (four males and two females) ran 40 m with the IMU placed on their fifth lumbar vertebra. The accuracy was measured through the mean error (standard deviation), correlation (r), and comparison tests. The device could identify 88% to 98% of the number of steps. The GCT, flight time, and step time had mean error rates of 0.000 (0.012) s, 0.010 (0.011) s, and 0.009 (0.009) s when compared with the high-speed camera, respectively. The step time showed a correlation rate of r = 0.793 (

Abstract The article analyses the new Russian Security Strategy as a formulation of Russia's “security dilemma”, both in terms of interpretation and response (Booth and Wheeler 2007). Very focused on the transformation of the world order, resulting from changes in the International System, within which the powers seek to strengthen their positions in the global structure, the strategy increasingly foresees the use of the military instrument as a way of guaranteeing and imposing national interests, which are reflected in different domains and regional areas. Exploring the strategic relations with China, in economic and political terms, Russia also seeks to strengthen its status as a global power, through the expansion of geographic space and areas of intervention. In its interpretation of the so-called “modern world”, very marked by the rivalry between the US and China, it seeks to assume itself as the geographical pivot of that same relationship. The National Security Strategy therefore is a roadmap for Russia's ambitions, assessing the motives, intentions and capabilities of the "others" and identifying the "rational" and "legitimate" ways of responding to its "security dilemma". Whereas it is possible to confirm that the invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 materialized the elements present in the strategy, the effects do not seem to coincide with the objectives sought by Moscow.

Abstract Small-scale devices are routinely used as low-cost miniaturized bioreactors due to the large number of experiments that can be conducted simultaneously under similar conditions and replicate all functions of bench-scale reactors at dramatically smaller volumes. Microtiter plates, due to the standard footprint, can be integrated with liquid handling systems and associated equipment, expanding considerably their application and use. However, care has to be taken to operate the microtiter plates in optimized mixing and oxygen transfer conditions, preventing medium evaporation in prolonged experiment runs. Recently, to increase data quality, microbioreactors have emerged as an alternative to shaken systems. These systems offer higher degree of control over key process variables and when combined with sensing technology increase dramatically the reliability of translational process data. In this chapter, we describe the production of 4-androstene-3,17-dione (androstenedione (AD)), a key pharmaceutical steroid intermediate, by Mycobacterium sp. NRRL B-3805 via the selective cleavage of the side-chain of β-sitosterol using 24-well microtiter plates and microfluidic microbioreactors.

Abstract For cells to obtain inorganic phosphate, ectoenzymes in the plasma membrane, which contain a catalytic site facing the extracellular environment, hydrolyze phosphorylated molecules. In this study, we show that increased Pi levels in the extracellular environment promote a decrease in ecto-phosphatase activity, which is associated with Pi-induced oxidative stress. High levels of Pi inhibit ecto-phosphatase because Pi generates H

Abstract Downstream analysis of OMICS data requires interpretation of many molecular components considering current biological knowledge. Most tools used at present for functional enrichment analysis workflows applied to the field of proteomics are either borrowed or have been modified from genomics workflows to accommodate proteomics data. While the field of proteomics data analytics is evolving, as is the case for molecular annotation coverage, one can expect the rise of enhanced databases with less redundant ontologies spanning many elements of the tree of life. The methodology described here shows in practical steps how to perform overrepresentation analysis, functional class scoring, and pathway-topology analysis using a preexisting neurological dataset of proteomic data.

Abstract Introduction: The sexual life of a couple is a dynamic entity, in which the two influence each other mutually, thus the existence of female sexual dysfunction (FSD) can influence the treatment of the man who seeks clinical help. Identify sexual dysfunction in female partners of patients attending an andrology clinic may provide a therapeutic opportunity. The authors aim to assess proportion of FSD in this population by comparison with a control group.
Material and methods: A longitudinal study over 12 months timespan. The female partners of patients attending the andrology clinic participating in the study (study group - SG) completed the Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI), as did the women serving as controls (control group - CG). Further data such as age, duration and quality of the relationship and previous relationships was also collected.
Results: Of the 30 women included in the SG, 14 (46.6%) considered that their current sex life was worse than in previous relationships. Of the 20 women in the CG, 60% considered that their current sex life was better. In the SG, 22 (73.3%) had FSD, with a mean score in the FSFI of 20.5, whereas only 3 women in the CG (15%) had FSD, with a mean score of 30.7 (p<0.01).
Conclusions: Our study demonstrated that the proportion of FSD in female partners of patients attending an andrology clinic is significantly higher than control group. FSD treatment should be considered as a therapeutic opportunity for the couple in this setting.

Abstract The application of lipid-based nanoparticles for COVID-19 vaccines and transthyretin-mediated amyloidosis treatment have highlighted their potential for translation to cancer therapy. However, their use in delivering drugs to solid tumors is limited by ineffective targeting, heterogeneous organ distribution, systemic inflammatory responses, and insufficient drug accumulation at the tumor. Instead, the use of lipid-based nanoparticles to remotely activate immune system responses is an emerging effective strategy. Despite this approach showing potential for treating hematological cancers, its application to treat solid tumors is hampered by the selection of eligible targets, tumor heterogeneity, and ineffective penetration of activated T cells within the tumor. Notwithstanding, the use of lipid-based nanoparticles for immunotherapy is projected to revolutionize cancer therapy, with the ultimate goal of rendering cancer a chronic disease. However, the translational success is likely to depend on the use of predictive tumor models in preclinical studies, simulating the complexity of the tumor microenvironment (e.g., the fibrotic extracellular matrix that impairs therapeutic outcomes) and stimulating tumor progression. This review compiles recent advances in the field of antitumor lipid-based nanoparticles and highlights emerging therapeutic approaches (e.g., mechanotherapy) to modulate tumor stiffness and improve T cell infiltration, and the use of organoids to better guide therapeutic outcomes.
