    Abstract Background: The sepsis screening tool is essential because it enables the rapid identification of high-risk patients and facilitates prompt treatment. Quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (qSOFA) is a widely used screening tool for sepsis. However, it has limitations in predicting patient prognosis. We developed the S-S.M.A.R.T (
    Methods: We conducted a single-center retrospective chart review of patients with suspected sepsis in the emergency department. We compared the prognosis prediction abilities of the S-S.M.A.R.T and qSOFA scores in patients with suspected sepsis. The primary outcome was 7-day mortality, and the secondary outcomes included 30-day mortality and ICU admission. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis and the chi-square test were used.
    Results: In total, 401 patients were enrolled. The mean age of the patients was 72.2 ± 15.6 years, and 213 (53.1%) of them were female. The S-S.M.A.R.T had superior predictive ability for prognosis of patients with suspected sepsis compared to qSOFA (area under the ROC curve (AUC) of 0.789 vs. 0.699;
    Conclusion: The S-S.M.A.R.T can be useful in predicting the prognosis of patients with suspected sepsis in the emergency department.

    Abstract This paper investigates the problem of designing event-triggered (ET) fuzzy controllers with varying gains for T-S fuzzy systems. New types of fuzzy controllers named ET fuzzy controllers with varying gains are proposed, in which the gains are automatically updated according to an online iteration algorithm at different triggering instants. By designing discontinuous Lyapunov function with time-varying Lyapunov matrix, sufficient conditions in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) are obtained to ensure the stability of the closed-loop system. It is shown that the proposed method achieves better system performances than the existing design methods with a quadratic Lyapunov function or ET fuzzy controllers with fixed gains. An example is provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

    Abstract We have studied topological indices of the one the hardest crystal structures in a given chemical system, namely, M-carbon. These structures are based and obtained by the famous algorithm USPEX. The computations and applications of topological indices in the study of chemical structures is growing exponentially. Our aim in this article is to compare and compute some well-known topological indices based on degree and sum of degrees, namely, general Randić indices, Zagreb indices, atom bond connectivity index, geometric arithmetic index, new Zagreb indices, fourth atom bond connectivity index, fifth geometric arithmetic index, and Sanskruti index of the M-carbon Mr,s,t. Moreover, we have also computed closed formulas for these indices.

    Abstract The effects of oleic acid addition methods on the metabolic flux distribution of ganoderic acids R, S and Ts biosynthesis from Ganoderma lucidum were investigated. The results showed that adding filter-sterilized oleic acid in the process of submerged fermentation and static culture is of benefit to the synthesis of ganoderic acids R, S and T. The metabolic fluxes were increased by 97.48%, 78.42% and 43.39%, respectively. The content of ganoderic acids R, S and T were 3.11 times, 5.19 times and 1.44 times higher, respectively, than they were in the control group, which was without additional oleic acid. Ganoderic acids R, S and Ts synthesis pathways (GAP), tricarboxylic acid cycles (TCA), pentose phosphate pathways (PP) and glycolysis pathways (EMP) were all enhanced in the process. Therefore, additional oleic acid can strengthen the overall metabolic flux distribution of G. lucidum in a submerged fermentation-static culture and it can reduce the accumulation of the by-product mycosterol. This study has laid an important foundation for improving the production of triterpenes in the submerged fermentation of G. lucidum .

    Abstract Background: To propose a quantitative model for predicting the surgical complexity of patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and venous tumor thrombus (VTT).
    Method: The clinical data of 226 cases of RCC with VTT in Peking University Third Hospital from January 2014 to August 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. Seven indicators were selected to establish the T.H.R.O.B.V.S. system, including alkaline phosphatase, tumor thrombus height, maximum tumor diameter, obesity, bland thrombus, vascular wall invasion, and side. Each indicator was assigned with 0, (1), and 2 points, and the total scores of 0~2, 3~5, and ≥6 were set as the low-, middle-, and high-risk groups, respectively. The surgical complexity was compared and validated among groups.
    Results: As the risk increased, the proportion of open surgery significantly increased (P<0.001). The operation time (P<0.001), intraoperative blood loss (P<0.001), blood or plasma transfusion (P<0.001), and hospitalization (P<0.001) increased significantly. The postoperative complications (P<0.001), including notable complications (≥Clavein-Dindo II, P<0.001), were significantly different, and similar trends were shown in the validation group.
    Conclusion: The T.H.R.O.B.V.S. scoring system is a quantifiable and satisfactory model to predict the surgical complexity and perioperative management of RCC with VTT.

    Abstract We consider a new problem of designing a network with small $s$-$t$ effective resistance. In this problem, we are given an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$, two designated vertices $s,t \in V$, and a budget $k$. The goal is to choose a subgraph of $G$ with at most $k$ edges to minimize the $s$-$t$ effective resistance. This problem is an interpolation between the shortest path problem and the minimum cost flow problem and has applications in electrical network design. We present several algorithmic and hardness results for this problem and its variants. On the hardness side, we show that the problem is NP-hard, and the weighted version is hard to approximate within a factor smaller than two assuming the small-set expansion conjecture. On the algorithmic side, we analyze a convex programming relaxation of the problem and design a constant factor approximation algorithm. The key of the rounding algorithm is a randomized path-rounding procedure based on the optimality conditions and a flow decomposition of the fractional solution. We also use dynamic programming to obtain a fully polynomial time approximation scheme when the input graph is a series-parallel graph, with better approximation ratio than the integrality gap of the convex program for these graphs.

    Abstract This paper is concerned with the design of piecewise fuzzy diagnostic observers for discrete-time T-S fuzzy systems under an event-triggered (ET) communication mechanism. Considering that the premise variables of the fuzzy diagnostic observer and the system may belong to different local space regions due to the introduction of ET mechanism, a partition method-based piecewise fuzzy diagnostic observer is designed to detect faults. The two-term approximation approach is introduced to approximate the time-varying delay. By transforming the augmented system into an input-output form consisting of two interconnected subsystems, the design condition of the piecewise fuzzy diagnostic observer is obtained by using the scaled small gain (SSG) theorem and a piecewise Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional. Furthermore, the L

    Abstract The emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants that escape vaccine-induced neutralizing antibodies has indicated the importance of T cell responses against this virus. In this study, we highlight the SARS-CoV-2 epitopes that induce potent T cell responses and discuss whether T cell responses alone are adequate to confer protection against SARS-CoV-2 and describe the administration of 20 peptides with an RNA adjuvant in mice. The peptides have been synthesized based on SARS-CoV-2 spike and nucleocapsid protein sequences. Our study demonstrates that immunization with these peptides significantly increases the proportion of effector memory T cell population and interferon-γ (IFN-γ)-, interleukin-4 (IL-4)-, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)-, and granzyme B-producing T cells. Of these 20 peptides, four induce the generation of IFN-γ-producing T cells, elicit CD8

    Abstract: The electronic structures, phonon dispersions, and electron–phonon coupling of Nb₂CT₂ (T = O, S, Se ...

    Abstract The electronic structures, phonon dispersions, and electron–phonon coupling of Nb₂CT₂ (T = O, S, Se, or Te) MXenes were investigated via first-principles calculations. Different models of Nb₂CT₂ were constructed, and the results show that the low-energy models of Nb₂CT₂ are intrinsic phonon-mediated superconductors. Of the four Nb₂CT₂ MXenes, Nb₂CO₂ MXene exhibits the largest superconducting critical temperature (Tc) of 14.43 K. The existence of soft modes induced by Kohn anomalies and the contribution of Nb atoms to the Fermi level lead to strong electron–phonon coupling (λ = 0.92) in Nb₂CO₂ MXene. The Tc of Nb₂CO₂ is further enhanced by biaxial tensile strain and reaches up to 18.28 K under 4% tensile strain. The predicted Tc of Nb₂CS₂ is 4.5 K, which is comparable with experimental data. These findings will further stimulate the search for superconducting MXenes.
