Abstract This study examined the role of lifetime and past 30-day experiences of sexual and gender minority (SGM) stress on clinical symptom severity in 286 psychiatrically hospitalized adolescents. Participants completed measures of clinical symptoms, and SGM adolescents (n = 176, 61.5 %) reported on minority stress experiences across three domains (i.e., negative expectancies, internalized homonegativity, homonegative climate). SGM adolescents reported greater clinical symptom severity than non-SGM adolescents. Most SGM adolescents (77.3%) reported lifetime minority stress exposure, endorsing an average of 3.3 stressors (SD = 2.9). Among those endorsing lifetime minority stress history, 76.1% reported past 30-day minority stress exposure. Lifetime and recent minority stress exposure were positively associated with clinical symptom severity. Findings support the importance of assessing SGM identities and minority stress experiences in psychiatric settings and supporting youth in coping with these experiences.

Abstract Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) represents a multisystem disease that has caused a devastating global pandemic. The COVID-19 vaccine produced in response to the pandemic has been effective but can have side effects. One well-established condition is the reactivation of herpes zoster (HZ). Various risk factors increase the risk of HZ reactivation such as age, infections, and immunosuppressed states. HZ can have severe complications, including herpes zoster ophthalmicus and postherpetic neuralgia. Here, we present a unique case where a patient experienced HZ reactivation after both primary doses of the COVID-19 vaccine despite receiving early antiviral treatment.

Abstract Background: Previous work from our lab has described a model of motor nerve degeneration in hyperglycemic zebrafish larvae which resembles mammalian models of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). Here, we optimized the hyperglycemic-induction protocol, characterized deficits in nerve structure and behavioral function, and then examined the regenerative potential following recovery from the hyperglycemic state.
Results: In agreement with our previous work, hyperglycemia induced motor nerve degeneration and behavioral deficits. However, the optimized protocol initiated disruption of tight junctions within the blood-nerve barrier, a phenotype apparent in mammalian models of DPN. Following a 10-day recovery period, regeneration of motor nerve components was apparent, but behavioral deficits persisted. We next examined the effect of hyperglycemia on the musculoskeletal system and found subtle deficits in muscle that resolved following recovery, and robust deficits in the skeletal system which persisted following recovery.
Conclusion: Here we optimized our previous model of hyperglycemia-induced motor nerve degeneration to more closely align with that observed in mammalian models and then characterized the regenerative potential following recovery from hyperglycemia. Notably, we observed striking impairments to skeletal development, which underscores the global impact hyperglycemia has across systems, and provides a framework for elucidating molecular mechanisms responsible for regenerative events moving forward.

Abstract Background: When evaluating new technology designed to improve patient care quality and safety in the clinical setting, researchers need instruments with evidence of reliability and validity. This secondary analysis aimed to examine the reliability and validity of the Positive and Negative Effectiveness of Technology Use (PNET) instrument.
Method: A sample of 71 nurses evaluated the current telephone interpretation system in use for persons with limited English proficiency. Internal consistency reliability using Cronbach's alpha and construct validity using factor analysis tests were assessed.
Results: Both positive and negative scales of the PNET instrument had adequate internal consistency reliability coefficients (α > .70) and evidence of construct validity; however, some items on the negative effectiveness scale may need to be revised.
Conclusion: The PNET scales may be useful in assessing nurses' views of existing and new technologies for quality improvement in the practice setting.

Abstract Introduction: Three widely referenced growth curves classify infant birth anthropometric measurements as small (SGA), appropriate (AGA), or large (LGA) for gestational age (GA) differently. We assessed how these differences in assignment affect the identification and prediction of neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) mortality risk in US preterm infants.
Methods: Birth data of infants admitted to NICUs from the Pediatrix Clinical Data Warehouse (2013-2018) were analyzed. Birth weight, length, and head circumference of 46,724 singleton infants (24-32 weeks GA) were classified as SGA, AGA, or LGA using the Olsen, Fenton, and INTERGROWTH-21st curves. NICU mortality risk based on birth size classification was analyzed using unadjusted and adjusted logistic regression stratified by GA.
Results: Odds of mortality were increased with SGA classification at all GAs, size measurements, and curve sets, compared with AGA infants. LGA classification for weight was associated with lower mortality risk at 24 weeks GA and higher risk at 30 weeks GA. Odds of mortality did not differ significantly across curve sets. Classification of size at birth alone had relatively low predictive ability to identify mortality risk, with unadjusted AUCs near 0.5 for all analyses.
Conclusion: There were no significant differences across curve sets in predicting mortality. Classification of size at birth is a relatively imprecise method to identify infants at risk for NICU mortality.
