Abstract In this study, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC)-based green biocomposites were developed using a solution casting technique. Essentially, the bonding between PLA and MCC is quite feeble; therefore, the current study is conducted to strengthen the bonding by incorporating a coupling agent, thereby enhancing the overall quality of the biocomposites. Thus, the present study aimed to examine the influence of combined coupling agents-maleic anhydride (MAH) and maleic acid (MA) (MAH-MA)-on the properties of polylactic acid (PLA)/microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) biocomposites. The investigation also encompassed an examination of the impact of MCC loading (2, 3, and 5% w/w) into a PLA matrix. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) examination revealed the interfacial interaction and adhesion among MCC, PLA, and coupling agents and the formation of biocomposites. The incorporation of MAH-MA led to improved mechanical properties of the PLA/MCC biocomposites. Furthermore, the incorporation of MAH-MA into the PLA/3 wt % MCC composite exhibited enhancements in both the tensile strength and tensile modulus, accompanied by a reduced elongation at break. In addition, it is worth noting that the thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) curve of the PLA composite with 3% w/w of MCC and MAH-MA displayed a significant decrease in weight beyond a temperature threshold of 492.65 °C. The water absorption demonstrates that the incorporation of MAH-MA into the PLA/MCC composite led to advantageous water barrier characteristics. The observed improvements were attributed to the efficient dispersion of MCC at the most favorable amount of coupling agents, along with the chemical interactions involving grafting and esterification between MCC and the MAH-MA coupling agent. Furthermore, the incorporation of MAH-MA into the PLA/3% (w/w) MCC composite exhibited enhancements in both the tensile strength and tensile modulus, accompanied by a reduction in the elongation percentage at break. The experimental results about water absorption demonstrate that the incorporation of MAH-MA into the PLA/MCC composite led to advantageous water barrier characteristics. These improvements were attributed to good MCC dispersion and the chemical interactions involving grafting and esterification between the MCC and the MAH-MA coupling agent.

Abstract Introduction: We present a single-eyed case with a previous diagnosis of breast cancer who had intraretinal cystoid changes associated with the systemic administration of ixabepilone in her only seeing eye. To our best knowledge, this is the first reported case describing this phenomenon related to the ixabepilone administration.
Case description: A 54-year-old woman with a history of breast cancer was examined due to visual deterioration in her only good left eye. The patient had undergone cataract surgery and lens implantation in her right eye following a childhood accident, but subsequently had developed a refractory glaucoma and lost her right vision. Six cycles of 40 mg/m
Conclusion: Angiographically silent intraretinal cystoid changes may develop in association with the use of ixabepilone. Referral to an ophthalmologist should be considered for the patients experiencing visual complaints as ixabepilone cessation may lead to visual improvement and avoid unnecessary treatment.

Abstract Backround: This study aimed to analyze the semantic network and content analyses of the posts published in a subreddit related to orthodontic treatment on Reddit (Advance Publications, Inc., San Francisco, California).
Methods: The eight threads in the r/Braces subreddit were divided into two categories: 1) "treatment process" (Braces are off!!!, Braces progress, Before and after!, and Day 1!) and 2) "question/problem" (Question, Discussion!, Need advice! and Rant!). For both categories, a semantic network analysis was performed using the Leximancer software (Leximancer Pty Ltd., Brisbane, Australia). In addition, the quality of the posts published in the "question" thread and the usefulness of the replies provided to these questions (useful, misleading, or neutral) were analyzed.
Results: Seven themes (braces, teeth, months, day, worth, started, and result) that mostly emphasized orthodontic treatment and treatment duration were elicited from the "treatment process" category, and seven themes (teeth, orthodontist, braces, week, bands, brush, and extractions) that mostly emphasized orthodontic treatment, orthodontists, and time were elicited from the "question/problem" category. It was also revealed that users voted on the posts related to the "treatment process" category and moved the posts to the list of top posts on the platform. In the "question" thread, 47.79% of the posts asked for advice and 21.11% of them were related to failures. In addition, 69% of the replies were categorized as "useful."
Conclusions: Reddit is a successful data mining platform, and the users provide highly useful replies to the questions posted on Reddit regarding orthodontic treatment.

Abstract Background: Pain management is important for patient comfort in the treatment of partial-thickness burn wounds. The topical application of ibuprofen provides analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of ibuprofen-containing foam dressing in partial-thickness burns.
Methods: The study included 50 patients with superficial second-degree burn wounds. Ibuprofen-containing foam dressing was used in 25 patients and paraffin gauze dressing in 25 patients as controls. The visual analogue score (VAS) was evaluated 30 min after dressing. On the 90th day following wound healing, the Vancouver scar scale (VSS) was administered to the patients to evaluate healing and scar formation.
Results: The rate of wound healing significantly increased in the study (ibuprofen-containing foam dressing) group compared to control group (8.84±2.97 vs 11.32±4.39, P = 0.010), and the frequency of dressing change significantly decreased in the study group vs control group (1.36±0.49 vs 5.68±2.07, P = 0.000). The oral analgesic needs and VAS scores of the patients were also found to be statistically significantly lower in the study group (5.04 ± 2.44) than for the control group (8.64 ± 1.29, P = 0.000). In the evaluation of the VSS, the total score was lower in the study group, but no statistically significant difference was observed.
Conclusion: The use of ibuprofen-containing foam dressing in patients with superficial second-degree burns eligible for outpatient follow-up provides effective pain management and increases patient comfort. It does not have a negative effect on wound healing. We consider that ibuprofen-containing foam dressing can be safely used in partial-thickness burns.

Abstract Colloidal self-assembly has gained significant interest in scientific and technological advances. We investigated the self-assembly of the colloids at fluidic interfaces that mediate elastic interactions. Whereas past studies have reported the assembly of micrometer- or molecular-sized species at aqueous interfaces of liquid crystals (LCs), herein we study the assembly of intermediate-sized nanoparticles. Specifically, surface-modified silica nanoparticles (50 to 500 nm) were adsorbed at the liquid crystal-water interfaces and their positioning was investigated using electron microscopy after polymerization. The study revealed that the electric double layer forces and the elastic forces caused by LC strain are dominant in the assembly of nanoparticles and their contributions can be tuned to direct the self-assembly guided by the sub-interface symmetry of confined cholesteric LCs. At high ionic strengths, we observed a strong localization of nanoparticles at the defects, whereas intermediate strengths resulted in their partial enrichment into cholesteric fingerprint patterns with an interaction energy of ≈3 k

Abstract Purpose: This study aims to investigate the effects of external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) surgery on tear meniscus parameters and assess its relationship with improvements in quality of life (QoL) in patients with nasolacrimal duct obstruction (NLDO).
Methods: This prospective study included 30 patients diagnosed with NLDO who underwent external DCR surgery. Tear meniscus (TM) parameters, including height, depth and area, were measured using anterior segment optical coherence tomography. Lacrimal symptom questionnaire (LacQ), Munk scores and Glasgow benefit inventories (GBI) were collected. Statistical analysis was performed to evaluate the correlation between tear meniscus changes and improvements in QoL.
Results: TM height, depth and area decreased from preoperative median measurements (0.09 mm
Conclusion: External DCR surgery leads to significant improvements in tear meniscus parameters and quality of life outcomes in patients with NLDO. The decreased in TM height and TM area indicates improved tear film dynamics and decreased tear volume, which positively impact the patients' ocular comfort and overall well-being. This study highlights the importance of tear meniscus evaluation as a potential market for assessing the success of DCR surgery and its impact on patients' QoL.

Abstract Aims: This study aimed to determine the peak hours of sleepiness and the factors affecting the sleepiness levels of nurses.
Background: Sleepiness is commonly seen in individuals working night shifts. However, in case of nurses, this sleepiness can be a major threat to patient and staff safety.
Method: This was a prospective cross-sectional study. Data were collected between July and September 2023, and a stratified sampling method was used according to the departments in which the nurses worked. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form and Visual Analog Scale. Nurses reported their sleepiness levels at the beginning of each hour between midnight and 8:00 am.
Equator checklist: The study adhered to the STROBE checklist for reporting.
Results: The mean sleepiness levels of emergency department nurses, intensive care nurses, internal or surgical clinic nurses, and all nurses were 59.75 ± 15.50, 43.53 ± 20.49, 44.67 ± 18.88, and 49.15 ± 19.67, respectively. The highest sleepiness level of the nurses was at 05:00 am. A significant correlation was found between the variables of age, gender, marital status, sleep quality, number of patients cared, working style and satisfaction with working in the department, and sleepiness level (P < 0.05).
Conclusion: Nurses working night shifts experience sleepiness (highest at 5:00 am). In addition, the sleepiness levels of nurses are affected by some personal and clinical factors.
Implications for nursing and nursing policy: Based on the results, there is a need for necessary policies regarding nurses' working hours and working conditions. To protect patient and employee safety, necessary strategies should be devised regarding the hours when nurses experience the highest sleepiness and the factors affecting sleepiness levels.

Abstract In this work, a molecular communication link integrated with a micro-electro mechanical system (MEMS) based environment has been designed and simulated. The motivation behind this approach is to explore the possibility of merging acoustic tweezing technique with a molecular communication system to increase the accuracy and reliability of the overall communication link. The proposed design is simulated using finite element methods that mimic the actual environment for an accurate solution. We derive symbol error rate as a performance metric and further show that the proposed system outperforms the diffusion-based modulation techniques and facilitates a reliable communication in the presence of fluid flow and while being insusceptible to external factors.

Abstract Introduction: Diverticular disease is defined as the presence of an asymptomatic diverticulum in the colon, and an infected diverticulum is called diverticulitis. Among patients with diverticular disease, 10-25% experience diverticulitis at some stage in their lives. This study aimed to evaluate the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) determined by dividing the neutrophil value by the lymphocyte value by comparing the stages of the patients according to the Hinchey classification who presented to the emergency department and were diagnosed with acute diverticulitis and to make a decision whether the patient should be treated by hospitalization or in the outpatient clinic. Methods: Patients who were admitted to the İstanbul Training and Research Hospital, between 2015 and 2019 and were diagnosed with acute diverticulitis by abdominal computed tomography were included in the study. Patients aged ≤18 years, pregnant patients, and patients with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, colorectal, and/or anal cancer were excluded from the study. Results: Age, white blood cell count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet, monocyte, granulocyte, neutrophil, NLR, C-reactive protein, and procalcitonin values were compared according to their stage. The neutrophil and NLR values were lower in patients with stage 1 than in those with stages 3 and 4. Moreover, the neutrophil and NLR values were lower in stage 2 than in stage 3. Conclusion: In our study, patients with acute diverticulum with higher NLR levels are more likely to develop complications. The combined use of NLR with physical examination, imaging, and other laboratory tests facilitates the diagnosis of complicated acute diverticulitis. However, further studies should be performed to confirm the utility of the NLR value in clinical practice.

Abstract Colloidal self-assembly has gained significant interest in scientific and technological advances. This result is comparable with the calculations based on the strength of the binary interactions of the nanoparticles. The findings also support the role of ion partitioning at the LC-aqueous interfaces on the formation of the assemblies. The results can be utilized for applications in sensors, microelectronics, and photonics.
