    Abstract A unique symbiosis exists between subterranean termites and the sclerotium-forming fungus Athelia termitophila, which forms termite-egg-mimicking sclerotia called ‘termite balls’. While the sclerotia gain a competitor-free habitat by being harboured by termite eggs, A. termitophila mycelia have to compete with wood-decay fungi in the life stage without termites. To understand its relationship with termites, the factors that affect the ability of A. termitophila to compete with other wood-decay fungi must be clarified. Here, we show that A. termitophila is competitive against other wood-decay fungi at low temperatures. In Petri dish experiments to evaluate the effects of the physicochemical conditions, that A. termitophila experiences in termite nests, on its competitive ability, A. termitophila overcame surrounding fungi in the winter, when termites are less active. Further studies quantifying the effects of A. termitophila on termites in winter will help us to understand this relationship.

    Abstract We present the postmortem computed tomography and autopsy findings of a 60-year-old man who developed milk of calcium pericardial effusion and died of constrictive epicarditis. He experienced out-of-hospital cardiopulmonary arrest, and spontaneous circulation returned at the hospital. However, 7 h after recovery, the patient died. He had a swollen neck, had been experiencing coughing from 4 to 5 days earlier, and had no significant medical or surgical history. On computed tomography (CT), highly dense pericardial fluid (CT value: 130-150 Hounsfield units) and multiple calcifications along the epicardium and pericardium were visualized. The epicardium and pericardium were thick, hard, rough, and widely calcified with mild adhesions on autopsy. The pericardial cavity contained a pale, reddish brown, turbid, and highly viscous liquid. Bacteriological tests of pericardial fluid cultures revealed the presence of group G β-hemolytic streptococci. Hence, we diagnosed the patient's cause of death as heart failure due to constrictive epicarditis. We believe that this case of milk of calcium pericardial effusion is the first case confirmed with postmortem CT and autopsy findings.

    Abstract Objectives: This study aimed to examine the prospective association among objectively measured average working hours (AWHs), frequency of long working hours (FLWHs; defined as ≥205 working hours/month (≥45 hours/week)) for 6 months, and workers' self-reported psychological and physical health.
    Methods: The study included 15 143 workers from 5 Japanese companies. We collected monthly attendance records over 6 months before distributing a questionnaire survey on psychological/physical stress responses and work-related demographics. We then evaluated the associations of those attendance records with psychological/physical measures using analysis of covariance adjusted for sex, age, employment, job type, working conditions, work site and experience of emergency state due to COVID-19.
    Results: Irritability, anxiety and depression were significantly greater at ≥180 hours (≥45 hours/week), and fatigue and lack of vigour were greater at ≥205 hours than those of the normal working-hour group (140-180 hours/month [35-45 hours/week]). Psychological indices increased significantly with FLWH, with ≥3 times for irritability, depression and fatigue; ≥2 times for lack of vigour; and ≥1 time for anxiety when compared with no long working hours. No significant associations were observed between AWH or FLWH and physical stress responses.
    Conclusions: Longer AWH was associated with higher levels of psychological stress responses. The effects of FLWH in the past 6 months varied among the psychological stress responses and did not occur for physical complaints. Under circumstances requiring long hours, workers' mental health should be protected through minimising the frequency of long work hours.

    Abstract Severe intracranial trauma during torture or assault is reportedly caused by shaken adult syndrome. However, intracranial traumas caused by natural forces, excluding human factors and collision impact, are extremely rare. We report an autopsy case of shaken adult syndrome caused by ocean wave forces. A man in his 40s without any medical history was washed away by a wave during recreational fishing. He was found approximately 500 m away from the fishing point drifting on the ocean in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest and was confirmed dead, with no response to cardiopulmonary resuscitation, 3 h after the accident. The autopsy revealed no mechanical trauma to the entire body surface, including the head. Both lungs were inflated, and pleural effusion was observed. The brain was swollen and congested, and subarachnoid hemorrhage was observed in the interhemispheric fissure and the convexity of the parietal occipital lobe. Macroscopic and microscopic hemorrhage spots were found in the brain, and the results of the blood alcohol test and urinary toxicological screening were negative. The cause of death was determined as drowning. This case demonstrates a rare but notable mechanism of injury observed in immersed bodies.

    Abstract A 73-year-old man was referred to our hospital for anemia. He underwent a colonoscopy; a 15-mm Ip polyp and a 30- mm type 1 lesion were found in the sigmoid colon. Pathological examination results indicated a well-differentiated adenocarcinoma. Thoracic computed tomography(CT)revealed a mass lesion 12 mm in diameter in the left lung lobe. The patient underwent a laparoscopic sigmoidectomy and D3 lymph node dissection and was discharged in a good condition. He then underwent a diagnostic-therapeutic segmental pulmonary resection for the pulmonary mass. Postoperative pathological findings indicated pT1b(SM), ly0, v0 and pT2(MP), ly1, v1, pN0 for the 2 lesions of the colon. The pulmonary mass was diagnosed as a metastatic adenocarcinoma based on immunostaining examination(CK7: negative, CK20: positive, TTF-1: negative, and CDX-2: positive). The patient is currently under follow-up as an outpatient without recurrence.

    Abstract Background: Combination of choledochocele and extra-hepatic duct duplication is an extremely rare congenital abnormality.
    Case presentation: The patient was an 81-year-old Japanese man. He visited the emergency room for severe abdominal colic pain. He was diagnosed with severe pancreatitis with cholelithiasis and treated conservatively by percutaneous trans-hepatic gallbladder drainage (PTGBD) for 4 months. Thereafter, he was transferred to our institute and cholangiography was performed via the PTGBD tube, revealing cholecysto- and choledocho-lithiasis. The cystic-duct joined the right hepatic duct with extra-hepatic bile duct duplication and the terminal bile duct flowed into the cystic papilla of Vater. The main pancreatic duct also joined into the cystic papilla. These observations confirmed choledochocele with extra-hepatic bile duct duplication. Surgical exploration was performed, and hepatico-jejunostomy with hepatic-ductplasty and cholecystectomy with choledocholithotomy were carried out. He was discharged and his course was uneventful.
    Conclusion: A very rare combined case of choledochocele with bile duct duplication, which would escalate the pancreatitis and cholangitis, was successfully treated. Their pathogeneses in relation to pancreaticobiliary maljunction is discussed.

    Abstract Centrosomes play a critical role in formation of bipolar mitotic spindles, an essential event for accurate chromosome segregation into daughter cells. Numeral abnormalities of centrosomes (centrosome amplification) occur frequently in cancers, and are considered to be the major cause of chromosome instability, which accelerates acquisition of malignant phenotypes during tumor progression. Loss or mutational inactivation of p53 tumor suppressor protein, one of the most common mutations found in cancers, results in a high frequency of centrosome amplification in part via allowing the activation of the cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) 2-cyclin E (as well as CDK2-cyclin A) which is a key factor for the initiation of centrosome duplication. In this review, the role of centrosome amplification in tumor progression, and mechanistic view of how centrosomes are amplified in cells through focusing on loss of p53 and aberrant activities of CDK2-cyclins will be discussed.

    Abstract The centrosome that functions as a microtubule organizing center of a cell plays a key role in formation of bipolar mitotic spindles. Cells normally have either one (unduplicated) or two (duplicated) centrosomes. However, loss of the mechanisms controlling the numeral integrity of centrosomes leads to centrosome amplification (presence of more than two centrosomes), primarily via overduplication or fragmentation of centrosomes, resulting in defective mitosis and consequentially chromosome instability. Centrosome amplification frequently occurs in various cancers, and is considered as a major cause of chromosome instability. It has recently been found that ROCK2 kinase plays a critical role in promotion of centrosome duplication and amplification. Considering that ROCK2 is activated by Rho protein, and Rho is the immediate downstream target of many growth and hormone receptors, it is possible that such receptors may rather directly affect centrosome duplication and amplification. Indeed, constitutive activation of the receptors known to signal to the Rho pathway leads to promotion of centrosome amplification and chromosome instability in the Rho-ROCK2 pathway-dependent manner. These observations reveal an unexplored, yet important, oncogenic activities of those receptors in carcinogenesis; destabilizing chromosomes through promotion of centrosome amplification via continual activation of the Rho-ROCK2 pathway.

    Abstract Chromosome instability, which is equated to mitotic defects and consequential chromosome segregation errors, provides a formidable basis for the acquisition of further malignant phenotypes during tumour progression. Centrosomes have a crucial role in the formation of bipolar mitotic spindles, which are essential for accurate chromosome segregation. Mutations of certain oncogenic and tumour-suppressor proteins directly induce chromosome instability by disrupting the normal function and numeral integrity of centrosomes. How these proteins control centrosome duplication and function, and how their mutational activation and/or inactivation results in numeral and functional centrosome abnormalities, is discussed in this Review.
