    Abstract Aortic stenosis (AS) is a common form of left ventricular outflow tract obstruction (LVOTO) in children with congenital heart disease. This review specifically considers the perioperative features of valvar (VAS) and subvalvar AS (subAS) in the pediatric patient. Although VAS and subAS share some clinical features and diagnostic approaches, they are distinct clinical entities with separate therapeutic options, which range from transcatheter intervention to surgical repair. We detail the pathophysiology of AS and highlight the range of treatment strategies with a focus on anesthetic considerations for the care of these patients before, during, and after intervention.

    Abstract Friedrich Bonhoeffer made seminal contributions to the study of axon guidance in the developing nervous system. His discoveries of key cellular and molecular mechanisms that dictate wiring specificity laid the foundation for countless investigators who have followed in his footsteps. Perhaps his most significant contribution was the cloning and characterization of members of the conserved ephrin family of repulsive axon guidance cues. In this review, we highlight the major contributions that Bonhoeffer and his colleagues made to the field of axon guidance, and discuss ongoing investigations into the diverse array of mechanisms that ensure that axon repulsion is precisely regulated to allow for accurate pathfinding. Specifically, we focus our discussion on the post-translational regulation of two major families of repulsive axon guidance factors: ephrin ligands and their Eph receptors, and slit ligands and their Roundabout (Robo) receptors. We will give special emphasis to the ways in which regulated endocytic trafficking events allow navigating axons to adjust their responses to repellant signals and how these trafficking events are intimately related to receptor signaling. By highlighting parallels and differences between the regulation of these two important repulsive axon guidance pathways, we hope to identify key outstanding questions for future investigation.

    Abstract Perceptual narrowing is a domain-general process in which infants move from a broad sensitivity to a wide range of stimuli to developing expertise within often experienced native stimuli (Maurer & Werker, 2014). One outcome of this is the own-race bias, characterized by an increasing difficulty in discriminating other-race faces with age and experience for those raised in a racially homogenous environment (Anzures, Quinn, Pascalis, Slater, Tanaka, & Lee, 2013). Theorists have proposed that this is due to a categorization-individuation process, wherein infants begin to categorize non-native stimuli but continue to individuate native stimuli (Hugenberg, Young, Bernstein, & Sacco, 2010; Nelson, 2001). Exposure to multiple exemplars during initial learning has been found to facilitate infant categorization of other-species faces while exposure to a single exemplar does not (Dixon, Reynolds, Romano, Roth, Stumpe, Guy, & Mosteller, 2019). The goal of this study was to investigate the effects of initial learning conditions on infants' ability to individuate and categorize own- and other-race faces. Ten-month-old infants were familiarized with a single exemplar or multiple exemplars of own- or other-race faces. Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while infants were presented with the familiar face(s) they were exposed to during familiarization, novel faces from the same race used during familiarization, and novel faces from a race other than the one used in familiarization. Infants familiarized with a single exemplar, regardless of race, showed significant differences in both the Nc component (Negative central, associated with visual attention) and the LSW (late slow wave, associated with recognition memory) between familiar and novel faces at the subordinate-level category of race. No differences were found across familiarization conditions for the P400 component associated with face processing. Infants familiarized with multiple exemplars showed no evidence of discriminating faces at the categorical or individual level. Results suggest that, in contrast to other-species faces, infants at this age may process human faces more efficiently when familiarized with a single exemplar. The implications of the current findings are discussed in relation to the impact of initial learning conditions on infants' ability to individuate and categorize own- and other-species faces and social implications of infants' processing of other-race faces.

    Abstract Background: Adolescence is a key developmental period for the emergence of psychopathology. Reward-related brain activity increases across adolescence and has been identified as a potential neurobiological mechanism of risk for different forms of psychopathology. The reward positivity (RewP) is an event-related potential component that indexes reward system activation and has been associated with both concurrent and family history of psychopathology. However, it is unclear whether the RewP is also associated with higher-order psychopathology subfactors and whether this relationship is present across different types of reward.
    Methods: In a sample of 193 adolescent females and a biological parent, the present study examined the association between adolescent and parental psychopathology subfactors and adolescent RewP to monetary and social reward.
    Results: Results indicated that the adolescent and parental distress subfactors were negatively associated with the adolescent domain-general RewP. The adolescent and parental positive mood subfactors were negatively associated with the adolescent domain-general and domain-specific monetary RewP, respectively. Conversely, the adolescent and parental fear/obsessions subfactors were positively associated with the adolescent domain-general RewP. The associations between parental and adolescent psychopathology subfactors and the adolescent RewP were independent of each other.
    Conclusions: The RewP in adolescent females is associated with both concurrent and parental psychopathology symptoms, suggesting that it indexes both severity and risk for higher-order subfactors.

    Abstract Introduction: Colorectal cancer remains the second leading cause of cancer-related death in 60-79 years old and the third leading cause of death in patients aged 80 and above. Rectal cancer accounts for approximately a third of colorectal cancer diagnoses. The current standard of care for managing locally advanced rectal cancer involves a multimodal combined approach with neoadjuvant treatment, surgery with total mesorectal excision and adjuvant chemotherapy. Neoadjuvant treatment can be in the form of short-course radiotherapy, long-course concurrent radiotherapy with chemotherapy or total neoadjuvant chemotherapy with concurrent chemoradiotherapy followed by chemotherapy. This scoping aims to assess the toxicity and outcome of the different neoadjuvant treatment modalities in elderly patients.
    Methods and analysis: We will use Arksey and O'Malley's five scoping review methodology framework stages. Searches will be conducted in Ovid Medline, Embase, Cochrane database and CINAHL. In addition, the researcher will hand search for all registered trials, using a combination of terms such as "locally advanced rectal cancer", "neoadjuvant treatment", and "elderly patients." Two independent reviewers will screen titles and abstracts and then full text based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. Publications will be extracted using a customised data extraction tool to include study characteristics, research topics, exposures and outcomes.
    Ethics and dissemination: Ethics approval is not required as the data will be collected from the existing literature. The findings of this study will help with future clinical research on the topic. We will publish the findings of this review in a peer-reviewed journal and present them at academic conferences targeting geriatric oncology service providers.

    Abstract The current study utilized eye-tracking to investigate the effects of intersensory redundancy and language on infant visual attention and detection of a change in prosody in audiovisual speech. Twelve-month-old monolingual English-learning infants viewed either synchronous (redundant) or asynchronous (non-redundant) presentations of a woman speaking in native or non-native speech. Halfway through each trial, the speaker changed prosody from infant-directed speech (IDS) to adult-directed speech (ADS) or vice versa. Infants focused more on the mouth of the speaker on IDS trials compared to ADS trials regardless of language or intersensory redundancy. Additionally, infants demonstrated greater detection of prosody changes from IDS speech to ADS speech in native speech. Planned comparisons indicated that infants detected prosody changes across a broader range of conditions during redundant stimulus presentations. These findings shed light on the influence of language and prosody on infant attention and highlight the complexity of audiovisual speech processing in infancy.
