Abstract This article investigates the role of Big Data in situations of psychological stress such as during the recent pandemic caused by the COVID-19 health crisis. Quarantine measures, which are necessary to mitigate pandemic risk, are causing severe stress symptoms to the human body including mental health. We highlight the most common impact factors and the uncertainty connected with COVID-19, quarantine measures, and the role of Big Data, namely, how Big Data can help alleviate or mitigate these effects by comparing the status quo of current technology capabilities with the potential effects of an increase of digitalization on mental health. We find that, while Big Data helps in the pre-assessment of potentially endangered persons, it also proves to be an efficient tool in alleviating the negative psychological effects of quarantine. We find evidence of the positive effects of Big Data on human health conditions by assessing the effect of internet use on mental health in 173 countries. We found positive effects in 110 countries with 90 significant results. However, increased use of digital media and exclusive exposure to digital connectivity causes negative long-term effects such as a decline in social empathy, which creates a form of psychological isolation, causing symptoms of acute stress disorder.

Abstract Purpose: To identify risk factors for developing pressure ulcers (PUs) in the acute care period of traumatic spinal fracture patients with or without spinal cord injuries (SCIs).
Methods: Data were collected prospectively in participating the National Spinal column/Cord Injury Registry of Iran (NSCIR-IR) from individuals with traumatic spinal fractures with or without SCIs, inclusive of the hospital stay from admission to discharge. Trained nursing staff examined the patients for the presence of PUs every 8 h during their hospital stay. The presence and grade of PUs were assessed according to the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel classification. In addition to PU, following data were also extracted from the NSCIR-IR datasets during the period of 2015 - 2021: age, sex, Glasgow coma scale score at admission, having SCIs, marital status, surgery for a spinal fracture, American Spinal Injury Association impairment scale (AIS), urinary incontinence, level of education, admitted center, length of stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), hypertension, respiratory diseases, consumption of cigarettes, diabetes mellitus and length of stay in the hospital. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the unadjusted and adjusted odds ratio (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI).
Results: Altogether 2785 participants with traumatic spinal fractures were included. Among them, 87 (3.1%) developed PU during their hospital stay and 392 (14.1%) had SCIs. In the SCI population, 63 (16.1%) developed PU during hospital stay. Univariate logistic regression for the whole sample showed that marital status, having SCIs, urinary incontinence, level of education, treating center, number of days in the ICU, age, and Glasgow coma scale score were significant predictors for PUs. However, further analysis by multiple logistic regression only revealed the significant risk factors to be the treating center, marital status, having SCIs, and the number of days in the ICU. For the subgroup of individuals with SCIs, marital status, AIS, urinary incontinence, level of education, the treating center, the number of days in the ICU and the number of days in the hospital were significant predictors for PUs by univariate analysis. After adjustment in the multivariate model, the treating center, marital status (singles vs. marrieds, OR = 3.06, 95% CI: 1.55 - 6.03, p = 0.001), and number of days in the ICU (OR = 1.06, 95% CI: 1.04 - 1.09, p < 0.001) maintained significance.
Conclusions: These data confirm that individuals with traumatic spinal fractures and SCIs, especially single young patients who suffer from urinary incontinence, grades A-D by AIS, prolonged ICU stay, and more extended hospitalization are at increased risk for PUs; as a result strategies to minimize PU development need further refinement.

Abstract This application note investigates the causal relationship between oil price and tourist arrivals to further explain the impact of oil price volatility on tourism-related economic activities. The analysis itself considers the time domain, frequency domain and information theory domain perspectives. Data relating to US and nine European countries are exploited in this paper with causality tests which include time domain, frequency domain, and Convergent Cross Mapping (CCM). The CCM approach is nonparametric and therefore not restricted by assumptions. We contribute to existing research through the successful and introductory application of an advanced method, and via the uncovering of significant causal links from oil prices to tourist arrivals.

Abstract Genome-wide association studies the evaluation of association between candidate gene and disease status is widely carried out using Cochran-Armitage trend test. However, only a small number of research papers have evaluated the distribution of p-values for the Cochran-Armitage trend test. In this paper, an enhanced version of Cochran-Armitage trend test based on bootstrap approach is introduced. The achieved results confirm that the distribution of p-values of the proposed approach fits better to the uniform distribution, and it is thus concluded that the proposed method, which needs less assumptions in comparison with the conventional method, can be successfully used to test the genetic association.

Abstract Introduction: Despite advanced diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, many brain tumors are still diagnosed at high grades and, therefore finding novel molecular markers may assist in early detection and reducing brain tumors-related mortality rate. Owing to the previous reports on the importance of MCPH1 gene in tumorigenesis, the present study was aimed to study the promoter methylation of MCPH1 gene in paired circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) and tumor tissues of brain tumor patients.
Materials and methods: Fourteen fresh paired serum and tumor tissue samples in addition to 18 isolated serum samples were collected from patients affected by different grades of brain tumor. Genomic DNA and cfDNA was isolated from tissue and serum samples using QIAamp DNA Mini Kit Norgen Bioteck Kit, respectively. Methylation DNA immunoprecipitation Real-time polymerization chain reaction (MeDIP-Real-time PCR) was performed on isolated DNA samples using EpiQuik MeDIP Ultra Kit and specific primer pairs. cfDNA quantity was determined through Real-time PCR analysis using specific primer pairs designed for GAPDH gene.
Results: MCPH1 was methylated in 54% of cfDNA samples which was significantly associated with tumor grade, as well (P-value = 0.02). The methylation rate of MCPH1 was found as 78% in the tissue samples which was meaningfully associated with tumor grade (P-value = 0.03). Moreover, methylation of the MCPH1 gene was consistent in 57% of the same cfDNA and tissue samples. Methylation of MCPH1 gene in neither tumor tissues nor cfDNA was not correlated with age and sex of the patients.
Discussion and conclusion: Due to the conformity of methylation of MCPH1 gene in cfDNA and tissue samples in more than half of the enrolled patients, especially in higher grades of tumors, it seems that MCPH1 promoter methylation could be a potential epimarker in not only detection of brain tumors but also in response to chemo- and radiotherapy which warranted further assessment.
