    Abstract Diabetes mellitus (DM) is characterized by the appearance of progressive kidney damage, which may progress to end-stage kidney disease. The control of hyperglycemia is usually not sufficient to halt this progression. The kidney damage is quantitatively and qualitatively different in the two forms of diabetes; the typical nodular fibrosis (Kimmelstiel Wilson nodules) appears mostly in type 1 DM, whereas glomerulomegaly is primarily present in type 2 obese DM. An analysis of the different metabolites and hormones in type 1 and type 2 DM and their differential pharmacological treatments might be helpful to advance the hypotheses on the different histopathological patterns of the kidneys and their responses to sodium/glucose transporter type 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i).

    Abstract We have measured the temperature-dependent kinetics for the reactions of OH(+) with H2 and D2 using a selected ion flow tube apparatus. Reaction occurs via atom abstraction to result in H2O(+)/HDO(+) + H/D. Room temperature rate coefficients are in agreement with prior measurements and resulting temperature dependences are T(0.11) for the hydrogen and T(0.25) for the deuterated reactions. This work is prompted in part by recent theoretical work that mapped a full-dimensional global potential energy surface of H3O(+) for the OH(+) + H2 → H + H2O(+) reaction [A. Li and H. Guo, J. Phys. Chem. A 118, 11168 (2014)], and reported results of quasi-classical trajectory calculations, which are extended to a wider temperature range and initial rotational state specification here. Our experimental results are in excellent agreement with these calculations which accurately predict the isotope effect in addition to an enhancement of the reaction rate constant due to the molecular rotation of OH(+). The title reaction is of high importance to astrophysical models, and the temperature dependence of the rate coefficients determined here should now allow for better understanding of this reaction at temperatures more relevant to the interstellar medium.

    Abstract Objectives: Recent studies suggest a link between chronic kidney disease and brain dysfunctions such as depression and cognitive problems. A review of medieval and early-modern historical figures with aspects of both kidney disease (gout and edema [dropsy]) and depression (melancholia) shows that these conditions were observed together in the past.
    Materials and methods: References to the diseases of gout, dropsy, and melancholia were compared in literature on historical subjects. Case studies are reported to detail a previously unremarked com-bination of current kidney disease and depression comorbidity in historical writings.
    Results: The poet Boccaccio had gout and melancholia, and some descendants of the Portuguese Avis and Spanish Trastàmara dynasties, known for melancholia and madness, also had gout and dropsy. Historical case series of causes of death for sultans of the Ottoman Empire suggest an association among dropsy, gout, and melancholia.
    Conclusions: In this article, we reviewed the medical research on the comorbidity of kidney disease and depression and shared case studies of historical figures with these conditions and posit not previously noted data supporting comorbidity observations in historical writings.

    Abstract The progressive formation of single or multiple cysts accompanies several renal diseases. Specifically, (i) genetic forms, such as adult dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), and (ii) acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) are probably the most frequent forms of cystic diseases. Adult dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is a genetic disorder characterized by multiple kidney cysts and systemic alterations. The genes responsible for the condition are known, and a large amount of literature focuses on the molecular description of the mechanism. The present manuscript shows that a multiscale approach that considers supramolecular physical phenomena captures the characteristics of both ADPKD and acquired cystic kidney disease (ACKD) from the pathogenetic and therapeutical point of view, potentially suggesting future treatments. We first review the hypothesis of cystogenesis in ADPKD and then focus on ACKD, showing that they share essential pathogenetic features, which can be explained by a localized obstruction of a tubule and/or an alteration of the tubular wall tension. The consequent tubular aneurysms (cysts) follow Laplace's law. Reviewing the public databases, we show that ADPKD genes are widely expressed in various organs, and these proteins interact with the extracellular matrix, thus potentially modifying wall tension. At the kidney and liver level, the authors suggest that altered cell polarity/secretion/proliferation produce tubular regions of high resistance to the urine/bile flow. The increased intratubular pressure upstream increases the difference between the inside (Pi) and the outside (Pe) of the tubules (∆P) and is counterbalanced by lower wall tension by a factor depending on the radius. The latter is a function of tubule length. In adult dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD), a minimal reduction in the wall tension may lead to a dilatation in the tubular segments along the nephron over the years. The initial increase in the tubule radius would then facilitate the progressive expansion of the cysts. In this regard, tubular cell proliferation may be, at least partially, a consequence of the progressive cysts' expansion. This theory is discussed in view of other diseases with reduced wall tension and with cysts and the therapeutic effects of vaptans, somatostatin, SGLT2 inhibitors, and potentially other therapeutic targets.

    Abstract Thermal rate coefficients for the title reactions computed using a quasi-classical trajectory method on an accurate global potential energy surface fitted to ∼81,000 high-level ab initio points are compared with experimental values measured between 100 and 600 K using a variable temperature selected ion flow tube instrument. Excellent agreement is found across the entire temperature range, showing a subtle, but unusual temperature dependence of the rate coefficients. For both reactions the temperature dependence has a maximum around 350 K, which is a result of H2O(+) rotations increasing the reactivity, while kinetic energy is decreasing the reactivity. A strong isotope effect is found, although the calculations slightly overestimate the kinetic isotope effect. The good experiment-theory agreement not only validates the accuracy of the potential energy surface but also provides more accurate kinetic data over a large temperature range.

    Abstract Vibrational predissociation spectra are reported for two isomeric forms of the gas-phase ions, CO(3)(-) and NO(3)(-). The peroxy forms, (OOCO(-) and OONO(-)) were isolated using an Ar-mediated synthetic scheme involving exchange of CO and NO for the more weakly bound Ar ligands in O(2)(-)Ar(m) clusters, while the forms based on a central heteroatom (CO(3)(-) and NO(3)(-)) were generated by electron impact on CO(2) and HNO(3) vapor. The simple two-band spectrum of OOCO(-) indicates that it is best described as the O(2)(-) x CO ion-molecule complex, whereas the covalently bound CO(3)(-) form yields a much more complicated vibrational spectrum with bands extending out to 4000 cm(-1). In contrast, the NO(3)(-) ion yields a simple spectrum with only one transition as expected for the antisymmetric NO stretching fundamental of a species with D(3h) structure. The spectrum of the peroxynitrite isomer, OONO(-), displays intermediate complexity that can be largely understood in the context of fundamentals associated with its cis and trans structures previously characterized in an Ar matrix.

    Abstract In this study, the functional consequences of the pharmacological modulation of the M-current (I(KM)) on cytoplasmic Ca(2+) intracellular Ca(2+)concentration ([Ca(2+)](i)) changes and excitatory neurotransmitter release triggered by various stimuli from isolated rat cortical synaptosomes have been investigated. K(v)7.2 immunoreactivity was identified in pre-synaptic elements in cortical slices and isolated glutamatergic cortical synaptosomes. In cerebrocortical synaptosomes exposed to 20 mM [K(+)](e), the I(KM) activator retigabine (RT, 10 microM) inhibited [(3)H]D-aspartate ([(3)H]D-Asp) release and caused membrane hyperpolarization; both these effects were prevented by the I(KM) blocker XE-991 (20 microM). The I(KM) activators RT (0.1-30 microM), flupirtine (10 microM) and BMS-204352 (10 microM) inhibited 20 mM [K(+)](e)-induced synaptosomal [Ca(2+)](i) increases; XE-991 (20 microM) abolished RT-induced inhibition of depolarization-triggered [Ca(2+)](i) transients. The P/Q-type voltage-sensitive Ca(2+)channel (VSCC) blocker omega-agatoxin IVA prevented RT-induced inhibition of depolarization-induced [Ca(2+)](i) increase and [(3)H]D-Asp release, whereas the N-type blocker omega-conotoxin GVIA failed to do so. Finally, 10 microM RT did not modify the increase of [Ca(2+)](i) and the resulting enhancement of [(3)H]D-Asp release induced by [Ca(2+)](i) mobilization from intracellular stores, or by store-operated Ca(2+)channel activation. Collectively, the present data reveal that the pharmacological activation of I(KM) regulates depolarization-induced [(3)H]D-Asp release from cerebrocortical synaptosomes by selectively controlling the changes of [Ca(2+)](i) occurring through P/Q-type VSCCs.

    Abstract Background: Standard sleeve lobectomies are recommended over pneumonectomy (PN), but the efficacy and oncological proficiency of complex sleeve lobectomies (CSLs) have not been completely investigated. The aim of this study was to report our experience in CSL in patients affected by a centrally located non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), comparing all the variables and outcomes with PN.
    Methods: From 2014 to 2022, we collected the data of patients who underwent PN and CSL for NSCLC, excluding neuroendocrine tumors, salvage surgery or carinal resection. Regression analysis was used to assess the association between procedures and complications; the Kaplan-Meier method and Cox regression analysis were used to evaluate survival and risk factors of reduced survival.
    Results: We analyzed
    Conclusions: Considering that major complications are often associated with mortality after surgery for centrally located NSCLC, CSLs could be considered an alternative to PN while also ensuring comparable survival.
