Abstract As personalized medicine has gained traction, drug development models in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry (BPI) have increasingly sought to address medical conditions with a genetic component, creating an opportunity for genetic counselors (GCs) to fill new roles and utilize their unique training to contribute to drug development. Despite the potential for GCs in BPI, literature around the role of GCs in this industry has been limited. Our mixed methods study aimed to assess how the roles of GCs in BPI have evolved since 2016, investigate the value of and opportunity for GCs in this industry, and further characterize their motivation and job satisfaction. Participants were recruited via social media advertising, snowball sampling, and email listservs from the National Society of Genetic Counseling (NSGC), the Canadian Association of Genetic Counselors (CAGC), and the American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC). Survey (n = 20) and interview (n = 6) data indicates many aspects of GC roles in BPI are consistent with the 2016 study. However, there is evidence of roles becoming more varied and with increasing recognition of the value of GCs, opportunities for involvement in BPI are growing. Furthermore, combined study data found that GCs are motivated by the flexibility of BPI roles as well as the opportunity to contribute to rare disease treatment development and that they are overall satisfied with most aspects of their jobs. Interview data also found that genetic counseling training has the potential to improve clinical trial design and outcomes by making drug development more patient-centric. Finally, combined study data found that while GCs continue to utilize Accreditation Council of Genetic Counseling (ACGC) practice-based competencies (PBCs), business-related training may benefit GCs seeking to enter BPI. Together, these findings are critical for informing genetic counseling training programs, employers within BPI, and GCs interested in entering these positions.

Abstract Biological indicators are often used to evaluate the effect of management practices on soil health. However, determining which indicators can detect changes in soil health after implementation of conservation practices and how these indicators relate to plant growth in grass seed production systems remains unclear. The goal of this study was to explore the relationships between management practice history, soil health metrics, plant growth, and soil microbial communities in annual ryegrass grown under greenhouse conditions. Soils were collected from 12 annual ryegrass [Lolium multiflorum (L.) Husnot] fields managed under conventional (till/bale) or conservation (no‐till/full straw) management practices, with three silt loams and three silty clay loams collected for each practice. Annual ryegrass was grown for 5 months on each of the 12 soils in a greenhouse. Soils with a history of conservation management improved the majority of the carbon cycling‐related metrics for the silt loam soils. Management practices had no effect on seed yield, however, conservation management significantly improved aboveground biomass in silty clay loam soils. Contrasting management practices resulted in distinct microbial communities, making them sensitive indicators of changes in soil conditions. Soil health and plant metrics were positively associated with the microbial communities in soils under conservation management. Total C and organic matter were positively correlated to plant parameters in silt loams, while few indicators were correlated to plant metrics in silty clay loams. These results highlight the complex interplay between microbial communities, soil health, and plant growth and the importance of considering inherent soil properties like texture.

Abstract Background and objectives: Robotic gynecologic surgery has outpaced data showing risks and benefits related to cost, quality outcomes, and patient safety. We aimed to assess how credentialing standards and perceptions of safe use of robotic gynecologic surgery have changed over time.
Methods: An anonymous, online survey was distributed in 2013 and in 2021 to attending surgeons and trainees in accredited obstetrics and gynecology residency programs.
Results: There were 367 respondents; 265 in 2013 and 102 in 2021. There was a significant increase in robotic platform use from 2013 to 2021. Percentage of respondents who ever having performed a robotic case increased from 48% to 79% and those who performed > 50 cases increased from 25% to 59%. In 2021, a greater percentage of attending physicians reported having formalized protocol for obtaining robotic credentials (93% vs 70%, p = 0.03) and maintaining credentialing (90% vs 27%, p < 0.01). At both time points, most attendings reported requiring proctoring for 1 - 5 cases before independent use. Opinions on the number of cases needed for surgical independence changed from 2013 to 2021. There was an increase in respondents who believed > 20 cases were required (from 58% to 93% of trainees and 29% to 70% of attendings). In 2021, trainees were less likely to report their attendings lacked the skills to safely perform robotic surgery (25% to 6%, p < 0.01).
Discussion: Greater experience with robotic platforms and expansion of credentialing processes over time correlated with improved confidence in surgeon skills. Further work is needed to evaluate if current credentialing procedures are sufficient.

Abstract Evidence has accumulated that confirms the success of a positive youth development (PYD) approach. Importantly, a positive development approach is just that-an approach. It is not a particular program or curriculum but a set of practices designed to achieve one or more positive outcomes. As such, PYD practices can be added onto other programs to make positive outcomes more likely. For example, a tutoring program can work hard to hire and train staff to work with students in a trusting, respectful relationship. Camp counselors can be encouraged to build rapport and positive bonds among the campers.
