Abstract Leucism is a genetic trait caused by a lack of melanin pigment in an animal’s skin, feathers, or fur. Unlike albinism, which is defined by a total lack of melanin synthesis, leucism is characterised by a partial loss of pigmentation. The definitions of leucism and various aspects of albinism are exceedingly vague. This very first documented report of a leucistic Jungle Babbler (Turdoides striata) in Northern India was made in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. More study is needed to look at the additional places of occurrence of these leucistic individuals, as well as the genetic basis of leucism in Jungle Babblers.

Abstract We study the diffusive behavior of interacting active particles (self-propelled) with mass m in an asymmetric channel. The particles are subjected to an external oscillatory force along the length of the channel. In this setup, particles may exhibit rectification. In the absence of interaction, the mean velocity 〈v〉 of the particles shows a maximum at moderate m values. It means that particles of moderate m have higher velocities than the others. However, by incorporating short-range interaction between the particles, 〈v〉 exhibits an additional peak at lower m values, indicating that particles of lower and moderate m can be separated simultaneously from the rest. Furthermore, by tuning the interaction strength, the self-propelled velocity, and the parameters of the oscillatory force, one can selectively separate the particles of lower m, moderate m, or both. Empirical relations for estimating the optimal mass as a function of these parameters are proposed. These findings are beneficial for separating the particles of selective m from the rest of the particles.

Abstract The well-known Internal Model Principle (IMP) is a cornerstone of modern control theory. It stipulates the necessary conditions for asymptotic robustness of disturbance-prone dynamical systems by asserting that such a system must embed a subsystem in a feedback loop, and this subsystem must be able to reduplicate the dynamic disturbance using only the regulated variable as the input. The insights provided by IMP can help in both designing suitable controllers and also in analysing the regulatory mechanisms in complex systems. So far the application of IMP in biology has been case-specific and ad hoc, primarily due to the lack of generic versions of the IMP for biomolecular reaction networks that model biological processes. In this short article we highlight the need for an IMP in biology and discuss a recently developed version of it for biomolecular networks that exhibit maximal Robust Perfect Adaptation (maxRPA) by being robust to the maximum number of disturbance sources.

Abstract Background: A red rash on the face in an adult patient is a common presentation to general practice in Australia. Rashes on the face significantly affect quality of life because this is a cosmetically sensitive site. Ascertaining the correct diagnosis is therefore of utmost importance so that appropriate treatment can be initiated.
Objective: This article discusses the assessment of red rashes on the face in an adult patient.
Discussion: Diagnosing a red rash on the face requires assessment of symptomology, age of onset, rash morphology and 'clinical clues' that help delineate between differentials. Although the list of differential diagnoses is wide, many of the common diagnoses can be made clinically without the need for investigations. Investigations such as skin biopsy are useful if the diagnosis is unclear, if the rash is not responding to initial treatment and/or a referral to a dermatologist is being considered.

Abstract Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) insertion is a routine procedure in the neonatal intensive care unit required for prolonged intravenous fluid, nutrition and medication support. Neonatal cardiac tamponade is a serious and rare complication of PICC line insertion. Early detection by point of care ultrasound (POCUS) and management by pericardiocentesis improves the chances of survival. Regular simulation-based training sessions on a mannequin, along with knowledge of POCUS, can assist neonatologists and paediatricians for a quick and appropriate response in this emergency condition.

Abstract The invention of the Fourier integral in the 19th century laid the foundation for modern spectral analysis methods. Here the authors develop frequency-based methods for analyzing the reaction mechanisms within living cells from distinctively noisy single-cell output trajectories and present forward engineering of synthetic oscillators and controllers.
