Abstract Critical micelle concentration (cmc) values were determined for the mixed zwitterionic/cationic gemini systems of N-dodecyl- N, N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (ZW3-12)/ N, N'-bis(dimethyldodecyl)-α,ω-alkanediammonium dibromide (12-s-12) systems. The cmc values for the mixed systems were determined through conductivity measurements. The degree of nonideality of the interaction in the mixed micelle (β

Abstract Purpose: To document baseline cervical sagittal characteristics in Lenke 1 adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) patients and assess the alteration in these parameters with surgery.
Methods: Pre-operative and 2-year postoperative radiographs of 82 Lenke 1 AIS patients recruited from five hospitals were analysed. Selected radiographic parameters capturing regional and global sagittal alignment were measured. Comparison was made between groups based on baseline thoracic kyphosis (TK: TK < 20°, TK ≥ 20°). Pre-operative and postoperative values were compared-the change in each radiographic parameter was correlated with the degree of sagittal and coronal correction.
Results: At baseline, TK was 29.8° ± 16°, cervical lordosis (CL) was - 1° ± 14°, lumbar lordosis (LL) was - 57.1° ± 21°, C2-C7 sagittal vertical axis (SVA) was 16 ± 14 mm and C7-S1 SVA was - 15 ± 28 mm; 44% of patients had cervical kyphosis. Patients with thoracic hypokyphosis had a significantly lower LL and more kyphotic cervical spine compared to those with thoracic normohyperkyphosis. The effect of surgery on TK depended on pre-operative thoracic sagittal alignment-TK increased in patients with thoracic hypokyphosis, but decreased in patients with thoracic normohyperkyphosis. Neither CL nor C2-C7 SVA changed significantly with surgery; 46% of patients still had cervical kyphosis postoperatively.
Conclusion: There is a high incidence of cervical kyphosis at baseline in AIS patients-more so in those with pre-operative thoracic hypokyphosis. Unlike TK, CL is not significantly altered with surgery-improvement in CL correlates weakly with sagittal correction of the structural curve.

Abstract Analysis of surface energy balance (SEB) at the glacier surface is the most comprehensive way to explain the atmosphere-glacier interactions but that requires extensive data. In this study, we analyse an 11-year (2009–2020) record of the meteorological dataset from an automatic weather station installed at 4863 m a.s.l., on a lateral moraine of the Chhota Shigri Glacier in the western Himalaya. The study was carried out over the winter months (December to April) to understand SEB drivers and snow sublimation. Further, we examine the role of cloud cover on SEB and turbulent heat fluxes. The turbulent heat fluxes were calculated using the bulk-aerodynamic method, including stability corrections. The net short-wave radiation was the primary energy source. However, the turbulent heat fluxes dissipated a significant amount of energy. The cloud cover plays an important role in limiting the incoming short-wave radiation by 70 %. It also restricts the turbulent heat fluxes by around 50 %, consequently less snow sublimation. During the winter period, turbulent latent heat flux contributed the largest (63 %) in the total SEB, followed by net all-wave radiation (29 %) and sensible heat flux (8 %). Sublimation rates were three times higher in clear-sky conditions than overcast, indicating a strong control of cloud cover in turbulent latent heat flux. Dry air, along with the high snow surface temperature and wind speed, favours sublimation. We also observed that strong and cold winds, possibly through mid-latitude western disturbances, impede sublimation by bringing high moisture content in the region and cooling the snow surface. The estimated snow sublimation fraction was 16–42 % of the total winter snowfall at the study site. This indicates snow sublimation is an essential parameter to be considered in the glaciohydrological modelling at the high mountain Himalayan catchments.

Abstract Background: Burn injuries rank among the most severe types of injuries suffered by the human body with an attendant high mortality and morbidity rate. In previous studies, incidence, severity and deaths due to burn were found higher in young married women in India. Study to find out mortality pattern in burn patient was not carried out in this part of country. Objective: To identify demographic and sociocultural factors, type, modes, causes and risk factors for burn injuries and their gender-wise association. Materials and Methods: It was a retrospective study. Data were collected from all burn patients who admitted and died while on the treatment from 2004 to 2009. A total of 586 patients were included in this study. Data were gathered from hospital records and entered in the excel sheet. Analysis of data was done by using SPSS version 17 statistical software. Results: The mean age of patients was 22.66 years (range 1 m to 80 years). Episodes of burn were 4.63 times common in female (82.25%) than in male (17.75%). It was statistically significant in females of age group 21-30 years (93.93% vs. 15.33% P < 0.0001). Married females (86.80%) burned more commonly than married males (13.19%) P < 0.0001. Flame burn was the major cause of death (95.56%). Kerosene was the most common (69%) source of flame burn. Clothes caught fire while working on Chullha were 25% cases ( P < 0.0001). Accidental (86.44%) burn was the most common intention of injury. The majority of burn deaths (68%) occurred within one week of the incident due to septicemia (57%). Conclusion: Factors associated with an increase in mortality were accidental burns, burn size, young age, married women, and flame burns. For planning and implementing prevention programs, the approach has to be multidisciplinary and coordinated.

Abstract OBJECTIVE: To evaluate prevalence of depression in individuals who attempted suicide and attended Regional Institute of Medical Sciences Hospital , Imphal. Method: The study was cross - sectional in which 50 patients who attempted suicide and attend ed RIMS Hospital and fulfilled the inclusion criteria were included in the study which was conducted from November 2005 to October 2006. A semi - structured interview schedule was used to find out the socio - demographic profile. Present State Examination was used for symptom elicitation and ICCD - 10 was used for confirming the diagnosis. RESULTS : Males (64%) outnumbered females. Sixty - four present had psychiatric illness , depressive episode (28%) being the most common diagnosis. CONCLUSION : Depressives episode was found to be commonest psychiatric illness in patients who attempted suicide.

Abstract Background: Pharmacology is the subject which has got scientific obligation and feedback from the students facilitates a change in preconceived notion about teaching. The study was under taken to elicit the perception and feedback regarding the prevailing system of teaching methods in pharmacology and requirement of any consequent changes. Methods: A questionnaire was designed and given to second years medical students on internationally accepted Likert scale which they were supposed to fill after giving due instructions. Analysis was done on percentage wise distribution of various parameters used in the questionnaire. Results: Out of the total of 150 enrolled students, 130 filled and returned questionnaire with students vouching for various changes with 125 (96%) agreeing that black board teaching as best method of teaching in contrast to 31 (23.8%) for PPT and 87 (66.9%) for combination of both. 109 (83.8%) wanted distribution of handouts giving outline of topic before lecture classes. Conclusions: There is a need of various reforms for improvement of prevailing teaching methods in pharmacology like microteaching and group discussions and involving MCQs in pattern of evaluation as opined by the students.
