Abstract: We study the following problem: Given a set $S$ of $n$ points in the plane, how many edge-disjoint plane straight-line spanning paths of $S$ can one draw? A well known result is that when the $n$ points are in convex position, $\lfloor n/2\rfloor$ such ... ...

Abstract We study the following problem: Given a set $S$ of $n$ points in the plane, how many edge-disjoint plane straight-line spanning paths of $S$ can one draw? A well known result is that when the $n$ points are in convex position, $\lfloor n/2\rfloor$ such paths always exist, but when the points of $S$ are in general position the only known construction gives rise to two edge-disjoint plane straight-line spanning paths. In this paper, we show that for any set $S$ of at least ten points, no three of which are collinear, one can draw at least three edge-disjoint plane straight-line spanning paths of~$S$. Our proof is based on a structural theorem on halving lines of point configurations and a strengthening of the theorem about two spanning paths, which we find interesting in its own right: if $S$ has at least six points, and we prescribe any two points on the boundary of its convex hull, then the set contains two edge-disjoint plane spanning paths starting at the prescribed points.

Abstract In this work, formulations of "environmentally compatible" silicone-based antifouling, synthesized in the laboratory and based on copper and silver on silica/titania oxides, have been characterized. These formulations are capable of replacing the non-ecological antifouling paints currently available on the market. The texture properties and the morphological analysis of these powders with an antifouling action indicate that their activity is linked to the nanometric size of the particles and to the homogeneous dispersion of the metal on the substrate. The presence of two metal species on the same support limits the formation of nanometric species and, therefore, the formation of homogeneous compounds. The presence of the antifouling filler, specifically the one based on titania (TiO

Abstract Hybrid visualizations combine different metaphors into a single network layout, in order to help humans in finding the "right way" of displaying the different portions of the network, especially when it is globally sparse and locally dense. We investigate hybrid visualizations in two complementary directions: (i) On the one hand, we evaluate the effectiveness of different hybrid visualization models through a comparative user study; (ii) On the other hand, we estimate the usefulness of an interactive visualization that integrates all the considered hybrid models together. The results of our study provide some hints about the usefulness of the different hybrid visualizations for specific tasks of analysis and indicates that integrating different hybrid models into a single visualization may offer a valuable tool of analysis.

Abstract The prevalence of non-communicable diseases has risen sharply in recent years, particularly among older individuals who require complex drug regimens. Patients are increasingly required to manage their health through medication adherence and self-care, but about 50% of patients struggle to adhere to prescribed treatments. This study explored the relationship between interest in medication adherence, health literacy, and self-care and how it changed during the COVID-19 pandemic. We used Google Trends to measure relative search volumes (RSVs) for these three topics from 2012 to 2022. We found that interest in self-care increased the most over time, followed by health literacy and medication adherence. Direct correlations emerged between RSVs for medication adherence and health literacy (r = 0.674,

Abstract In social networks, individuals' decisions are strongly influenced by recommendations from their friends, acquaintances, and favorite renowned personalities. The popularity of online social networking platforms makes them the prime venues to advertise products and promote opinions. The Influence Maximization (IM) problem entails selecting a seed set of users that maximizes the influence spread, i.e., the expected number of users positively influenced by a stochastic diffusion process triggered by the seeds. Engineering and analyzing IM algorithms remains a difficult and demanding task due to the NP-hardness of the problem and the stochastic nature of the diffusion processes. Despite several heuristics being introduced, they often fail in providing enough information on how the network topology affects the diffusion process, precious insights that could help researchers improve their seed set selection. In this paper, we present VAIM, a visual analytics system that supports users in analyzing, evaluating, and comparing information diffusion processes determined by different IM algorithms. Furthermore, VAIM provides useful insights that the analyst can use to modify the seed set of an IM algorithm, so to improve its influence spread. We assess our system by: (i) a qualitative evaluation based on a guided experiment with two domain experts on two different data sets; (ii) a quantitative estimation of the value of the proposed visualization through the ICE-T methodology by Wall et al. (IEEE TVCG - 2018). The twofold assessment indicates that VAIM effectively supports our target users in the visual analysis of the performance of IM algorithms.

Abstract The problem of deciding whether a biconnected planar digraph $G=(V,E)$ can be augmented to become an $st$-planar graph by adding a set of oriented edges $E' \subseteq V \times V$ is known to be NP-complete. We show that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable when parameterized by the size of the set $E'$.

Abstract Orienting the edges of an undirected graph such that the resulting digraph satisfies some given constraints is a classical problem in graph theory, with multiple algorithmic applications. In particular, an $st$-orientation orients each edge of the input graph such that the resulting digraph is acyclic, and it contains a single source $s$ and a single sink $t$. Computing an $st$-orientation of a graph can be done efficiently, and it finds notable applications in graph algorithms and in particular in graph drawing. On the other hand, finding an $st$-orientation with at most $k$ transitive edges is more challenging and it was recently proven to be NP-hard already when $k=0$. We strengthen this result by showing that the problem remains NP-hard even for graphs of bounded diameter, and for graphs of bounded vertex degree. These computational lower bounds naturally raise the question about which structural parameters can lead to tractable parameterizations of the problem. Our main result is a fixed-parameter tractable algorithm parameterized by treewidth.

Abstract Primary mucosal melanoma (PMM) and pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) are two aggressive malignancies, characterized by intrinsic radio-chemoresistance and neurotropism, a histological feature resulting in frequent perineural invasion (PNI), supported by neurotrophic factors secreted in the tumour microenvironment (TME), such as neurotrophin-3 (NT-3). Carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT) could represent an effective option in unresectable PMM and PDAC. Only a few data about the effects of CIRT on PNI in relation to NT-3 are available in the literature, despite the numerous pieces of evidence revealing the peculiar effects of this type of radiation on tumour cell migration. This in vitro study investigated for the first time the response of PMM and PDAC cells to NT-3 and evaluated the effects of conventional photon beam radiotherapy (XRT) and CIRT on cell viability, proliferation, and migration. Our results demonstrated the greater capacity of C-ions to generally decrease cell viability, proliferation, and migration, while the addition of NT-3 after both types of irradiation determined an increase in these features, maintaining a dose-dependent trend and acting more effectively as a chemoattractant than inductor in the case of migration.

Abstract In this work, formulations of “environmentally compatible” silicone-based antifouling, synthesized in the laboratory and based on copper and silver on silica/titania oxides, have been characterized. The presence of the antifouling filler, specifically the one based on titania (TiO 2 ) and silver (Ag), facilitates the achievement of a higher degree of cross-linking of the resin, and therefore, a better compactness and completeness of the coating than that attained with the pure resin. Thus, a high degree of adhesion to the tie-coat and, consequently, to the steel support used for the construction of the boats was achieved in the presence of the silver–titania antifouling.
