    Abstract Gun violence in the United States is a serious problem. Addressing the problem will require not only strong leadership but also a unique approach. One such approach was utilized by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln, who assembled a "Team of Rivals" with positions different than his own that provided helpful perspective in finding solutions to the problems of the time. This article applies the team of rivals approach to the problem of gun violence.

    Abstract Maize brace roots develop from aboveground stem nodes in both upright and vertically displaced stalks. The cues that trigger brace root development after displacement are unknown. Possibilities include disturbance of the belowground roots, gravity, moisture, physical interaction, or node anatomical changes. We show that brace root formation occurs at all growth stages, with more nodes producing brace roots when plants are displaced at later growth stages. This occurs with the underground roots intact, without moisture accumulation and without physical interaction. We propose that the formation of brace roots after vertical stalk displacement is most likely due to gravity or anatomical changes at the node.

    Abstract The continuing demand for agrochemical insecticides that can meet increasing grower, environmental, consumer and regulatory requirements creates the need for the development of new solutions for managing crop pest insects. The development of resistance to the currently available insecticidal products adds another critical driver for new insecticidal active ingredients (AIs). One avenue to meeting these challenges is the creation of new classes of insecticidal molecules to act as starting points and prototypes stimulating further spectrum, efficacy and environmental impact refinements. A new class of insecticides is foreshadowed by the first molecule exemplifying that class (first-in-class, FIC) and offers one measure of innovation within the agrochemical industry. Most insecticides owe their discovery to competitor-inspired (i.e. competitor patents/products) or next-generation (follow-on to a company's pre-existing product) strategies. In contrast, FIC insecticides primarily emerge from a bioactive hypothesis approach, with the largest segment resulting from the exploration of new areas of chemistry/heterocycles and underexploited motifs. Natural products also play an important role in the discovery of FIC insecticides. Understanding the origins of these FIC compounds and the approaches used in their discovery can provide insights into successful strategies for future FIC insecticides. This review analyses information on historic and recently introduced FIC insecticides. Its main objective has been to identify the most successful discovery strategies for identifying new agrochemical solutions to meet the challenge of minimizing crop losses resulting from insects. © 2022 Society of Chemical Industry.

    Abstract The association between women's labor force participation, their alcohol consumption patterns, and mortality risk is unclear. This study assessed all-cause mortality risk among women in the United States, considering their labor force status and alcohol drinking. This study used discrete-time hazard models to examine this association using 2001-2015 National Health Interview Survey-Linked Mortality Files (NHIS-LMF) data (n = 147,714) for women aged 25 to 65 with 5725 deaths in this sample. Complex survey-weighted adjustments and E-values calculations were used to limit quantitative and observational biases. Alcohol consumption and labor force status together lead to substantial mortality risks. There is a statistically significant mortality risk among unemployed women (HR 2.15, 95% CI 1.18-3.91) and women not in labor force (HR 2.38, 95% CI 1.87-3.01). In the stratified models, non-Hispanic blacks (HR 1.48, 95% CI 1.30-1.67) and Asians (HR 1.93, 95% CI 1.54-2.44) have heightened mortality risks borne out of employment. Women with higher psychological distress have a 26% higher risk of all-cause mortality when not in labor force. With the help of cross-sectional data, this study demonstrates that women not in labor force and unemployed women are more likely to be affected by their drinking habits, and their employment status is associated with lower mortality risk. Further research should be focused on cause-specific mortality, gender roles and norms, reasons for unemployment, and comorbidities using more recent data, causal modeling techniques, and an extended mortality follow-up period.

    Abstract Sea level rise (SLR) is estimated to impact 25% of the world's population along coastal areas leading to an increase in saltwater intrusion. Consequently, changes in the soil biogeochemistry of currently non-saline and/or well-drained soils due to saltwater intrusion are of major concern. Saltwater intrusion is expected to affect farmland across large broiler producer regions, where large amounts of manure containing organic arsenicals were applied over the past decades. To determine how SLR may impact the speciation and mobility of adsorbed inorganic and organic As, we used in situ real-time attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR) to determine the adsorption and desorption mechanisms of As(V) and 4-aminophenylarsonic (p-ASA, a poultry feed additive) on ferrihydrite (Fh) in the presence of sulfate at varying pH. The adsorption of As(V) and p-ASA increased at lower pH, with As(V) showing IR features consistent with the formation of inner-sphere of As-Fh surface complexes, while p-ASA also formed others structures as H-bonded As-surface complexes, likely mediated by outer-sphere complexes, based on our FTIR and batch experiments data. No observable As(V) or p-ASA desorption from the Fh surface was promoted by sulfate, however sulfate adsorption on the Fh surface was remarkably larger for p-ASA than for As(V). Complimentary, we carried out batch studies of As(V) and p-ASA desorption by Fh, using artificial seawater (ASW) at varying concentrations. The 1% ASW desorbed ∼10% of initially sorbed p-ASA, while at 100% ASW desorbed ∼40%. However, <1% of As(V) was desorbed by 1% ASW solution and only ∼7.9% were desorbed at 100% ASW. The spectroscopic data support the more extensive desorption of p-ASA compared to As(V) observed in batch experiments, suggesting that organoarsenicals may be easily desorbed and, after conversion to inorganic forms, pose a risk to water supplies.

    Abstract We show that supersymmetric supergravity solutions with an R-symmetry Killing vector are equipped with a set of equivariantly closed forms. Various physical observables may be expressed as integrals of these forms, and then evaluated using the Berline-Vergne-Atiyah-Bott fixed point theorem. We illustrate with a variety of holographic examples, including on-shell actions, black hole entropies, central charges, and scaling dimensions of operators. The resulting expressions depend only on topological data and the R-symmetry vector, and hence may be evaluated without solving the supergravity equations.
