Abstract Wandering spiders (genus Phoneutria) hold a prominent position as some of the worlds most medically significant venomous arachnids, especially in Brazil. In this study, we record and illustrate for the first time, the Darwin wasp Camera thoracica (Szpligeti, 1916) as a natural enemy of the ctenid Phoneutria nigriventer (Keyserling, 1891). Furthermore, we provide a description of the previously unknown male wasp, update and standardize the description of the female, and provide biological notes.

Abstract Biological collections are important repositories of biodiversity, as they include various types of data potentially useful to different areas of science and can contribute to the establishment of biodiversity conservation policies. For a long time, scientific collections were considered only as physical databases; in this context Harold G. Fowler (19502018) built an ant collection at the Universidade Estadual Paulista, campus Rio Claro (So Paulo state, Brazil), over the course of a 34-year career, comprising around 20,000 ant specimens. Most specimens came from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, but many others came from distinct locations in Brazil and abroad. After his death, the collection was left without the necessary curatorial care for a period of time, which required a project to be conceived for its recovery and conservation, with the goal of incorporating it to the Zoology Museum of the University of So Paulo (MZSP). In addition to applying modern technical curation protocols, other activities such as checking, material identification and digitization of the information contained on the sample labels were carried out, forming an accurate database. This process enabled the identification of new distribution records and the discovery of possible undescribed species and unpublished natural history data. After validating this information, we counted 524 valid species and 201 morphospecies belonging to 105 genera and 10 subfamilies. In addition, we integrated technical curation activities with scientific outreach to draw the general publics attention to the importance of biological collections, thus fostering interest in science, biodiversity and nature conservation. Our work highlights the importance of preserving the areas sampled by Fowlers research group. The preservation of vouchers using curatorial practices reinforces the role of scientific collections as important tools for the study, understanding and preservation of biodiversity.

Abstract Background: Elderly people have largely been vaccinated against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARSCoV-2) because of their higher risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Little is known about the efficacy of such vaccines in elderly people with cerebrovascular diseases. Method: Here, we present the preliminary results of serology (IgA and IgG) and molecular testing for SARS-CoV-2 in a case series of elderly patients who were admitted with an acute stroke and had received a single dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in a city of northeastern Brazil. Currently, we are enquiring from 11 Brazilian neurology centers for their data and openly inviting groups that are working in this field to collaborate. Results: Between January 28 and March 25, 14 patients with acute stroke and ages within the vaccine age ranges were admitted to our neurology center. Ten patients had received their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. Most patients were women over 80 years of age with vascular risk factors and ischemic stroke. Three patients aged >85 years had no anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies detectable. Three other patients had SARS-CoV-2 infection, among whom a man died a few days later. Conclusion: These cases exemplify how elderly people with cerebrovascular diseases and incomplete vaccination schemes can be susceptible to COVID-19.

Abstract Brazil is considered a middle-income country, where human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission and morbidity/mortality indicators have shown relative stability. The Northeast region of the country has less favorable socioeconomic indicators, with an increase in these statistics. In this context, the diagnosis of acute HIV infection (AHI) can favor the improvement of the control of the disease. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of universal screening for AHI in users of serological screening services, seeking to determine factors associated with the diagnosis of HIV infection. From July 2017 to July 2018, users of the voluntary counseling and testing center (VCT) of Fortaleza, with a minimum age of 18?years and with negative or indeterminate results in the rapid test for HIV, were invited to undergo the nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT). During the study, 7,166 users were enrolled, and 6,943 underwent rapid HIV testing, with 344 reactive results (5.0%). Factors associated with the diagnosis of HIV infection were male (prevalence ratio [PR]=22.3; 95% confidence interval [CI] 14.6?35.1), first visit the VCT (PR = 28.0; 95% CI: 20.4?39.3), recent sexually transmitted infection (STI) (PR = 13.8; 95% CI: 10.5?18.0), more than two recent sexual partners (PR = 14.4; 95% CI: 10.4?20.1), homosexual (PR = 33.4; 95% CI: 24.4?46.2) or bisexual (PR = 22.0; 95% CI: 12.6?36.7) practices, and reactive results for syphilis (PR = 16.4; 95% CI: 11.9?22.7). Among the 6,599 individuals with an indeterminate or nonreactive rapid test for HIV, 334 (5.1%) were selected for NAAT, and no cases of AHI were identified. The universal testing strategy by NAAT was not effective in screening for AHI, suggesting the need for targeted screening. Factors associated with the diagnosis of established HIV infection, such as men who have sex with men, recent STI, first visit to the service, number of partners (>two per year), and reactive test for syphilis, are potential targeting criteria.

Abstract To re-identify and further group 25 isolates of Trichosporon spp. identified morphologically previously, sequences of D1/D2 region of large subunit (LSU) of ribosomal DNA (rDNA) of 25 tested strains for identification and those of ribosomal intergenic space 1 (IGS1) region of 11 strains for subgrouping were detected. The identifications of tested strains were changed except 6 strains. According to the alignment of the IGS1 region, 6 T. asahii isolates tested fell into 4 groups and 5 T. faecale isolates into 3 groups. Polymorphism of 2 T. japonicum isolates was found in 10 positions. With the alignments obtained in this research compared with the relative GenBank entries, it was found that T. asahii, T. faecale and T. japonicum species were divided into 7, 3 and 2 subtypes respectively. Morphological and biophysical methods are not sufficient for Trichosporon spp. identification. Sequencing becomes necessary for Trichosporon diagnosis. There is obvious diversity within a species.
