Abstract Background: Malaria remains one of the largest public health problems facing the developing world. Insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) are an effective intervention against malaria. ITN delivery through routine health services, such as antenatal care (ANC) and childhood vaccination (EPI), is a promising channel of delivery to reach individuals with the highest risk (pregnant women and children under five years old). Decisions on whether to deliver ITNs through both channels depends upon the reach of each of these systems, whether these are independent and the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of each. Predictors of women attending ANC and EPI separately have been studied, but the predictors of those who attend neither service have not been identified.
Methods: Data from Chad, Mali and Niger demographic and health surveys (DHS) were analyzed to determine risk factors for attending neither service. A conceptual framework for preventative health care-seeking behaviour was created to illustrate the hierarchical relationships between the potential risk factors. The independence of attending both ANC and EPI was investigated. A multivariate model of predictors for non-attendance was developed using logistic regression.
Results: ANC and EPI attendance were found to be strongly associated in all three countries. However, 47% of mothers in Chad, 12% in Mali and 36% in Niger did not attend either ANC or EPI. Region, mother's education and partner's education were predictors of non-attendance in all three countries. Wealth index, ethnicity, and occupation were associated with non-attendance in Mali and Niger. Other predictors included religion, healthcare autonomy, household size and number of children under five.
Conclusions: Attendance of ANC and EPI are not independent and therefore the majority of pregnant women in these countries will have the opportunity to receive ITNs through both services. Although attendance at ANC and EPI are not independent, delivery through both systems may still add incrementally to delivery through one alone. Therefore, there is potential to increase the proportion of women and children receiving ITNs by delivering through both of these channels. However, modelling is required to determine the level of attendance and incremental potential at which it's cost effective to deliver through both services.

Abstract Objectives The COVID-19 pandemic posed a novel challenge for the 2020-2021 Match cycle resulting in a virtual interview season. The advent of virtual interviews raised concerns for both programs and medical students. The possibility of an impact on the application strategies for medical students resulting in students being more likely to remain in the region or state of their medical school was considered. We investigated whether there was a change in the geographic distribution of residency applicants for the class of 2025 (matched in 2021) as compared to the previous three application cycles (classes of 2022-2024) across all 168 neurology residency programs within the United States. Methods Publicly available data from neurology program websites were compiled to record the location of resident medical schools and matched programs for the residency classes of 2022-2025. Missing or ambiguous information was cross-referenced to social media, (e.g. LinkedIn and Twitter). Statistical analyses were conducted utilizing SPSS 26 (IBM SPSS 26 Statistics for Windows, Armonk, NY).  Results Across all four classes, regional retention (students matching in the same region) was 70.2% for the Northeast, 59.6% for the Midwest, 52.9% for the South, and 59.4% for the West. No significant change between the residency class of 2025 and the previous three classes was present. Discussion No significant change to the geographic trends for candidates was seen with the virtual interview process for the 2020-2021 neurology Match. As has been seen in other fields, a strong regional preference, with the majority of residents matching to programs in the same regions as their medical school, was seen for neurology.

Abstract Irritability is a common presenting problem in youth mental health settings that is thought to include two components: tonic (e.g., irritable, touchy mood) and phasic (e.g., temper outbursts), each with unique correlates and outcomes, including later internalizing and externalizing problems, respectively. However, we are unaware of any studies of early predictors of tonic and phasic irritability. We utilized data from a longitudinal study of a community sample of 3-year-old children followed to age 15 (n = 444). We conducted confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) of items from several self-report irritability measures at age 15, including the Affective Reactivity Index, the International Personality Item Pool, the Schedule for Non-Adaptive and Adaptive Personality Youth Version, and the Child Depression Inventory, and examined their early childhood predictors. The CFA identified dimensions consistent with tonic and phasic irritability. Tonic irritability at age 15 was uniquely associated with concurrent internalizing disorders and suicidal behavior while phasic irritability was uniquely associated with concurrent externalizing disorders. When adolescent tonic and phasic irritability were examined together, female sex and parental depressive and substance use disorders at age 3 uniquely predicted adolescent tonic irritability. Additionally, male sex, less parental education, greater laboratory-observed anger and impulsivity, ODD symptoms, higher irritability, and no parental substance use history at age 3 uniquely predicted adolescent phasic irritability. Youth-reported tonic and phasic irritability at age 15 appear to be distinguishable constructs with distinct concurrent correlates and early antecedents. Findings have important implications for research on the etiology of irritability and developing effective treatments.

Abstract Virtual reality and augmented reality have become increasingly prevalent in our lives. They are changing the way we see and interact with the world and have started percolating through medical education. In this article, we reviewed the key applications of virtual and augmented realities in neurology and neuroscience education and discussed barriers and opportunities for implementation in the curriculum. Although the long-term benefits of these approaches over more traditional learning methods and the optimal curricular balance remain mostly unexplored, virtual and augmented reality can change how we teach neurology and neuroscience.
