Abstract Extended reality (XR) devices, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) devices, are immersive technologies that can swap or merge the natural environment with virtual content (e.g., videogames, movies, or other content). Although these devices are widely used for playing videogames and other applications, they have one distinct feature that makes them potentially very useful for the measurement and treatment of binocular vision anomalies-they can deliver different content to the two eyes simultaneously. Indeed, horizontally shifting the images in the two eyes (thereby creating binocular disparity) can provide the user with a compelling percept of depth through stereopsis. Because these devices are stereoscopic, they can also be used as high-tech synoptophores, in which the images to the two eyes differ in contrast, luminance, size, position, and content for measuring and treating binocular anomalies. The inclusion of eye tracking in VR adds an additional dimension to its utility in measuring and treating binocular vision anomalies, as well as other conditions. This paper describes the essential requirements for testing and treating binocular anomalies and reviews current studies in which XR devices have been used to measure and treat binocular vision anomalies.

Abstract This article compares the place of line in the later art teaching of Ruskin with its role in the South Kensington system , the national art training scheme developed from the late 1830s under the auspices of the British Board of Trade. It focuses especially on Ruskin s influence on Ebenezer Cooke, a pupil of his at the Working Men s College in the 1850s and later, like Ruskin, a vigorous opponent of South Kensington. Starting from a heated public exchange of 1875 involving Ruskin, Cooke and an executant of the government system, William Bell Scott, the article examines Ruskin s theoretical and practical revaluation of line between the publication of The Elements of Drawing (1857) and of his second drawing manual, The Laws of Fésole (1877–78). It then shows how Cooke combined Ruskin s earlier analyses of curvature in nature and ornament and his growing sense of outline as a locus of interdisciplinary thought and moral expression with insights into child nature gleaned from the pedagogy of Pestalozzi and Froebel and from contemporary British psychology, thus developing an original understanding of, and method of teaching, elementary drawing founded on the ovate general forms which in Cooke s view formed a link between nature and historically and developmentally primitive design.

Abstract The gut microbiome is a potential non-genetic contributing factor for Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Differences in gut microbial communities have been detected between ALS subjects and healthy controls, including an increase in Escherichia coli in ALS subjects. E. coli and other gram-negative bacteria produce curli proteins, which are functional bacterial amyloids. We examined whether long-term curli overexposure in the gut can exacerbate the development and progression of ALS. We utilized the slow-developing hSOD1-G93A mouse model of ALS with their C57BL/6J WT littermate controls, including males and females, with a total of 91 animals. These mice were on a normal chow diet and fed curli-producing or curli-nonproducing (mutant) E. coli in applesauce (vehicle) 3 times/week, from 1 through 7 months of age. Male hSOD1 mice demonstrated gradual slowing in running speed month 4 onwards, while females exhibited no signs of locomotive impairment even at 7 months of age. Around the same time, male hSOD1 mice showed a gradual increase in frequency of peripheral CD19

Abstract Purpose: Breast cancer in the elderly has become a public health concern; there is a need to re-design its treatment with a view to de-escalation. Our paper sets out the rationale for a phase 3 randomized trial to evaluate less burdensome adjuvant procedures that remain effective and efficient.
Materials and methods: For low-risk breast cancer in the elderly, adjuvant treatment has been adjusted in order to make it more suitable and efficient. Hypofractionated radiation therapy based on accelerated or non-accelerated regimens as well as accelerated and ultra-accelerated partial breast irradiation (APBI) protocols were reviewed. Withdrawal of radiation (RT) or endocrine therapies (ET) from the adjuvant procedure were also investigated. Based on molecular and APBI classifications, inclusion criteria were discussed.
Results: Phase 3 randomized trials which compared standard vs. accelerated/non-accelerated hypofractionated regimens confirmed that the latter were non-inferior in terms of local control. Similarly, except for intraoperative-based techniques, APBI achieved non-inferior local control rates compared to whole breast irradiation for low-risk breast cancer. In phase 2 prospective trials using ultra APBI, encouraging results were observed regarding oncological outcome and toxicity profile. In phase 3 trials, adjuvant ET without RT significantly increased the rate of local relapse with no impact on overall survival while RT alone proved effective. Elderly patients aged 60 or more with low-risk, luminal A breast cancer were chosen as the target population in a phase 3 randomized trial comparing APBI + 5-year ET vs. uAPBI (16 Gy 1f) alone.
Conclusion: To investigate de-escalation adjuvant treatment for elderly breast cancer patients, we have defined a road map for testing more convenient strategies. This EPOPE phase 3 randomized trial is supported by the GEC-ESTRO breast cancer working group.
