Abstract A safe method to assess the bilaterality of inguinal hernias by herniography in 100 children up to 13 years was successfully adopted for the young patients with already a clinical unilateral hernia or undescended testis. In 40% of the cases was an occult contralateral open processus vaginalis peritonei radiologically discovered and surgically removed during the anesthesia for primary inguinal pathology. This is a safe preventive and curative technique to treat inguinal hernias in infants and children.

Title translation Cefamandole as prophylactic A.B. in abdominal surgery. Comparative study of cefamandole versus clindamycin/tobramycin (author's transl).
Abstract A prospective, randomized and controlled study of prophylactic A.B. was made in 100 patients prior to abdominal surgery. Fifty patients received 3 x 2 g of cefamandole I.V. within 24 hrs, the first dose being given at the time of anesthetic induction. Postoperative infections occurred in 2% of this group. Fifty patients received the association Clindamycin-Tobramycin (clindamycin 600 mg - tobramycin 80 mg/8 hrs) for 24 hrs, the first dose also at the induction of anesthesia. The complication rate in this group was 18%. The difference between those 2 groups is statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Cefamandole used as a prophylactic antibiotic in abdominal surgery reduces the incidence of postoperative wound infections when compared to the association clindamycin-tobramycin.

Abstract A 40-year-old male patient was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit with complicated pulmonary tuberculosis. After 4 days he developed an acute abdomen with free air as demonstrated on plain abdominal films. A laparotomy was performed and an ileal perforation was found, located just before the ileocaecal valve. A right hemicolectomy was carried out and the resected specimen was send for further patho-anatomical examination. Our suspicion of ileocaecal perforation due to tuberculosis was confirmed. Despite further extensive medical treatment, the patient died 15 days after admission to the hospital. At autopsy, the cause of death was confirmed as being due to fulminant pulmonary tuberculosis.

Abstract Presentation of the results of a national, multicentric and retrospective study regarding the surgery of the octogenarian. The series counts 7,407 patients accepted for surgery, and which can be divided into 4,581 women (61.8%) and 2,826 men (38.2%) of an average age of 84.4 years old (extremities 80-101 years old). The global mortality of this population of elderly (whether operated on or not) amounts to 16.7%. The postoperative mortality of the 4,177 operated patients is 18.2% with different rates according to the surgical disciplines: 34.7% for surgery of the colon, 23.2% for bone surgery, 22.4% for vascular surgery, 15.3% for biliary surgery, 8.7% for urologic surgery and 5.6% for cardiac surgery.
