Abstract Using data samples with an integrated luminosity of 5.85  fb^{-1} collected at center-of-mass energies from 4.61 to 4.95 GeV with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring, we measure the cross section for the process e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}K^{-}J/ψ. A new resonance with a mass of M=4708_{-15}^{+17}±21  MeV/c^{2} and a width of Γ=126_{-23}^{+27}±30  MeV is observed in the energy-dependent line shape of the e^{+}e^{-}→K^{+}K^{-}J/ψ cross section with a significance over 5σ. The K^{+}J/ψ system is also investigated to search for charged charmoniumlike states, but no significant Z_{cs}^{+} states are observed. Upper limits on the Born cross sections for e^{+}e^{-}→K^{-}Z_{cs}(3985)^{+}/K^{-}Z_{cs}(4000)^{+}+c.c. with Z_{cs}(3985)^{±}/Z_{cs}(4000)^{±}→K^{±}J/ψ are reported at 90% confidence levels. The ratio of branching fractions {[B(Z_{cs}(3985)^{+}→K^{+}J/ψ)]/B[Z_{cs}(3985)^{+}→(D[over ¯]^{0}D_{s}^{*+}+D[over ¯]^{*0}D_{s}^{+})]} is measured to be less than 0.03 at 90% confidence level.

Abstract Independent decision making requires forming stable estimates of one's preferences. We assessed whether adolescents learn about their preferences through choice deliberation and whether depressive symptoms disrupt this process. Adolescents aged 11-18 (N = 214; participated 2021-22; Female: 53.9%; White/Black/Asian/Mixed/Arab or Latin American: 26/21/19/9/8%) rated multiple activities, chose between pairs of activities and re-rated those activities. As expected, overall, participants uprated chosen and downrated unchosen activities (dz = .20). This value refinement through choice was not evident in younger participants but emerged across adolescence. Contrary to our predictions, depressive symptoms were associated with greater value refinement. Despite this, more depressed adolescents reported lower value certainty and choice confidence. The cognitive processes through which choice deliberation shapes preference develop over adolescence, and are disrupted in depression.

Abstract Oxytocin (OT) alters social cognition partly through effects on the processing and appraisal of faces. It is debated whether the hormone also impacts the processing of other, non-social, visual stimuli. To this end, we conducted a randomized, counter-balanced, double-blind, placebo (PL)-controlled within-subjects' electro-encephalography (EEG) study with cismale participants (to control for gender dimorphic hormonal effects; n = 37). Participants received intranasal OT (24IU) and completed a one-back task viewing emotional (fearful/ happy) and neutral faces, and threat (snakes/spiders) and non-threat (mushrooms/flowers) non-social stimuli. OT differentially impacted event-related potentials (ERP)s to faces and non-social stimuli. For faces regardless of emotion, OT evoked greater occipital N1 and anterior P1 amplitudes at ∼155 ms than after PL, and lead to sustained differences over anterior, bilateral parietal and occipital sites from 205 ms onwards. For all non-social stimuli, OT evoked greater right parietal N1 amplitudes, and later only impacted threat stimuli over right parietal and occipital sites. None of these OT-induced modulations was related to individual anxiety levels. This pattern of results indicates that OT differentially modulates the processing of faces and non-social stimuli, and that the hormone's effect on visual processing and cognition does not occur as a function of non-clinical levels of anxiety.

Abstract Looming motion interacts with threatening emotional cues in the initial stages of visual processing. However, the underlying neural networks are unclear. The current study investigated if the interactive effect of threat elicited by angry and looming faces is favoured by rapid, magnocellular neural pathways and if exogenous or endogenous attention influences such processing. Here, EEG/ERP techniques were used to explore the early ERP responses to moving emotional faces filtered for high spatial frequencies (HSF) and low spatial frequencies (LSF). Experiment 1 applied a passive-viewing paradigm, presenting filtered angry and neutral faces in static, approaching, or receding motions on a depth-cued background. In the second experiment, broadband faces (BSF) were included, and endogenous attention was directed to the expression of faces. Our main results showed that regardless of attentional control, P1 was enhanced by BSF angry faces, but neither HSF nor LSF faces drove the effect of facial expressions. Such findings indicate that looming motion and threatening expressions are integrated rapidly at the P1 level but that this processing relies neither on LSF nor on HSF information in isolation. The N170 was enhanced for BSF angry faces regardless of attention but was enhanced for LSF angry faces during passive viewing. These results suggest the involvement of a neural pathway reliant on LSF information at the N170 level. Taken together with previous reports from the literature, this may indicate the involvement of multiple parallel neural pathways during early visual processing of approaching emotional faces.

Abstract Introduction: Medical students value the opportunity to learn from patients as a supplement to traditional faculty-led education; however, long-term follow-up to understand the educational impact of these experiences is lacking. We surveyed medical students who conducted non-medical virtual encounters with transplant recipients or living donors to understand the impact on students' patient care approach after 1-2 y.
Methods: Students who completed their surgery clerkship from July 2020 to September 2021 were surveyed about this nonmedical patient encounter in January 2023. Quantitative and qualitative survey data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inductive thematic analysis, respectively.
Results: Of the 27 respondents (46% response rate), 44.4% completed the experience 1 y ago and 55.6% completed the experience 2 y ago. Nearly all respondents (96.3%) agreed that this experience was an effective way to learn about organ donation and transplantation and that learning from patients was beneficial to their development as a doctor. Over 50% felt this experience changed how they provide care to patients. Qualitatively, students reported that this activity cultivated their empathy for patients, provided unique insight into patients' illness experiences, and enhanced their understanding of the longitudinal patient-surgeon relationship.
Conclusions: Utilizing patients as teachers in transplant surgery not only taught medical students more about organ donation and transplantation but also built empathy and highlighted unique, non-clinical aspects of the patient experience that persisted over time. This is one of the first studies to evaluate patient-led teaching of this type over a year later and assess its unique influence on medical student development.

Abstract We present the synthesis of 1,1-bis(fluorosulfonyl)-2-(pyridin-1-ium-1-yl)ethan-1-ide, a bench-stable precursor to ethene-1,1-disulfonyl difluoride (EDSF). The novel SuFEx reagent, EDSF, is demonstrated in the preparation of 26 unique 1,1-bissulfonylfluoride substituted cyclobutenes via a cycloaddition reaction. The regioselective click cycloaddition reaction is rapid, straightforward, and highly efficient, enabling the generation of highly functionalized 4-membered ring (4MR) carbocycles. These carbocycles are valuable structural motifs found in numerous bioactive natural products and pharmaceutically relevant small molecules. Additionally, we showcase diversification of the novel cyclobutene cores through selective Cs

Abstract Introduction: While most pacemaker implantations occur in older individuals, younger patients also receive pacemakers. In these, degenerative conduction system disease is less likely to be the cause of atrioventricular block (AVB), with other diseases being more common. There is, however, a paucity of data on this group as well as on younger pacemaker recipients that have undergone pacemaker implantation for reasons other than AVB. The aim of this study was to perform an audit of young adult permanent pacemaker recipients.
Method: This was a retrospective record review, conducted in the Division of Cardiology at Tygerberg Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa. We included 169 adult patients between the ages of 18 and 60, who received permanent pacemakers between 2010 and 2020. A subgroup analysis of patients 55 years and younger was also performed.
Results: Third degree AVB was the most common indication for pacemaker implantation (
Conclusion: Given that the mean age of our study population was high, the low number of identified underlying causes in the whole cohort (≤60 years) may reflect some AVB due to age related degeneration of the conductions system in the patients 56 to 60 years age, but also raises the possibility that these patients may be less likely to be extensively investigated for an underlying cause than those ≤55 years, where diseases such as sarcoidosis were more readily confirmed. As access to advanced diagnostic tools improves, the percentage of young pacemaker recipients with an underlying cause identified may increase.

Abstract Adolescence is a period of self-concept development. In the current study, females aged 11-30 years (N = 210) completed two self-referential tasks. In a memory task, participants judged the descriptiveness of words for themselves or a familiar other and their recognition of these words was subsequently measured. In an associative-matching task, participants associated neutral shapes to either themselves or a familiar other and the accuracy of their matching judgements was measured. In the evaluative memory task, participants were more likely to remember self-judged than other-judged words and there was an age-related decrease in the size of this self-reference effect. Negative self-judgements showed a quadratic association with age, peaking around age 19. Participants were more likely to remember positive than negative words and there was an age-related increase in the magnitude of this positivity bias. In the neutral shapes task, there were no age-related changes in the self-reference effect.
