    A Precision Measurement of the Reactor Antineutrino Spectrum with Sub-percent Energy Resolution

    Abstract The Taishan Antineutrino Observatory (TAO, also known as JUNO-TAO) is a satellite experiment of the Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO). A ton-level liquid scintillator detector will be placed at about 30 m from a core of the Taishan Nuclear Power Plant. The reactor antineutrino spectrum will be measured with sub-percent energy resolution, to provide a reference spectrum for future reactor neutrino experiments, and to provide a benchmark measurement to test nuclear databases. A spherical acrylic vessel containing 2.8 ton gadolinium-doped liquid scintillator will be viewed by 10 m^2 Silicon Photomultipliers (SiPMs) of >50% photon detection efficiency with almost full coverage. The photoelectron yield is about 4500 per MeV, an order higher than any existing large-scale liquid scintillator detectors. The detector operates at -50 degree C to lower the dark noise of SiPMs to an acceptable level. The detector will measure about 2000 reactor antineutrinos per day, and is designed to be well shielded from cosmogenic backgrounds and ambient radioactivities to have about 10% background-to-signal ratio. The experiment is expected to start operation in 2022.

    Abstract The progress of deep learning technology has made image classification an important application field. Image style classification is a complex task involving the recognition of the whole picture, including the recognition of salient features and detailed features. This study is based on the ResNet algorithm and has improved its Resnet 50 version with excellent performance. In the model architecture, we introduce blur pool operation and replace the traditional Relu function with Celu activation function. In addition, the triplet attention mechanism was integrated to further enhance the model performance. Through a series of experiments, it is found that the improved ResNet50 model has the highest classification accuracy of 80.6% on large-scale image data sets, which is 11.7% higher than the traditional ResNet50 model. In terms of recognition of similar style images, the model incorporating triplet attention demonstrated higher average accuracy (74%) and recall (82%). This improvement has achieved certain results and has certain technical reference value for various styles of image classification fields.

    Abstract To evaluate the diagnostic potential of exosome-based circular RNAs (circRNAs) as biomarkers for wound healing in patients after breast cancer surgery, we conducted a comprehensive meta-analysis of studies that measured exosome-based circRNA levels in breast cancer patients post-surgery. Data sources included several biomedical databases up to April 2023. Two independent reviewers extracted the data and assessed study quality. Sensitivity, specificity and diagnostic odds ratios were synthesized using random-effects model with subgroup analyses performed based on study characteristics. Seventeen studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing a total of 1234 patients. The pooled sensitivity and specificity of exosome-based circRNA for detecting wound healing complications were 0.85 (95% CI: 0.77-0.91) and 0.83 (95% CI: 0.78-0.88), respectively. The area under the summary receiver operating characteristic (SROC) curve was 0.90, indicating high diagnostic accuracy. Subgroup analyses revealed that diagnostic performance was consistent across studies of different geographic regions and sample types but indicated potential variability related to patient age and study design. Exosome-based circRNA profiles exhibited the high diagnostic accuracy for monitoring wound healing in breast cancer post-operative care. These findings supported the potential utility of circRNA as non-invasive biomarkers for post-surgical recovery. However, variability among studies suggested the need for standardized protocols in biomarker measurement. Future research should focus on longitudinal studies to validate the prognostic value of these biomarkers and investigate their role in personalized patient management.

    Abstract Objective: This study aimed to explore the clinical application of aseptic skin repair dressing in facial dermatitis.
    Patients and methods: A total of 80 patients with facial dermatitis admitted to Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital from February 2020 to May 2021 were enrolled. And randomly assigned to the control group and study group, with 40 cases in each group. The control group received nicotinamide and narrow-band red light, while the study group received nicotinamide, narrow-band red light, and sterile skin repair dressing. The clinical efficacy, symptom score, erythema, transepidermal water loss (TEWL), and adverse reactions were compared after treatment.
    Results: After treatment, the study group exhibited significantly lower symptom scores, erythema amount, and TEWL value compared to the control group (P < .05). The clinical efficacy rate in the study group (97.5%) was significantly higher than that in the control group (82.5%) (P < .05). There was no statistically significant difference in the incidence of adverse reactions between the two groups (2.5% vs. 5%) (P > .05).
    Conclusion: Aseptic skin repair dressing, employed as an adjunctive therapy for facial dermatitis, demonstrates a noteworthy capacity to effectively mitigate parameters such as patient symptom scores, facial erythema quantity, and TEWL values. Notably, the application of this dressing does not pose an elevated risk of adverse reactions. These merits substantiate the superior therapeutic efficacy of aseptic skin repair dressing in facilitating the treatment of facial dermatitis.

    Abstract Noroviruses are among the major causative agents of human acute gastroenteritis, and the nature of norovirus outbreaks can differ considerably. The number of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between strains is used to assess their relationships. There is currently no universally accepted cutoff value for clustering strains that define an outbreak or linking the individuals involved. This study was conducted to estimate the threshold value of genomic variations among related strains within norovirus outbreaks. We carried out a literature search in the PubMed and Web of Science databases. SNP rates were defined as the number of SNPs/sequence length (bp) × 100%. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used in comparisons of the distribution of SNP rates for different sequence regions, genogroups (GI and GII), transmission routes, and sequencing methods. A total of 25 articles reporting on 108 norovirus outbreaks were included. In 99.1% of the outbreaks, the SNP rates were below 0.50%, and in 89.8%, the SNP rates were under 0.20%. Outbreak strains showed higher SNP rates when the P2 domain was used for sequence analysis (Z = -2.652, p = 0.008) and when an NGS method was used (Z = -3.686, p < 0.001). Outbreaks caused by different norovirus genotypes showed no significant difference in SNP rates. Compared with person-to-person outbreaks, SNP rates were lower in common-source outbreaks, but no significant difference was found when differences in sequencing methods were taken into consideraton. SNP rates under 0.20% and 0.50% could be considered as the rigorous and relaxed threshold, respectively, of strain similarity within a norovirus outbreak. More data are needed to evaluate differences within and between various norovirus outbreaks.

    Abstract Background: Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) may lead to poor asthma control in children.
    Objective: To identify risk factors of SDB in children with asthma and assess its impact on asthma control.
    Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we collected data of outpatients with asthma at the Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University from June 2020 to August 2021. The Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire-Sleep-Related Breathing Disorder and the age-appropriate asthma control tests Childhood Asthma Control Test and Test for Respiratory and Asthma Control in Kids were completed.
    Results: We enrolled 397 children with a male-to-female ratio of 1.7:1 and a mean age of 5.70 ± 2.53 years. The prevalence of SDB was 21.6%. Allergic rhinitis (odds ratio OR = 3.316), chronic tonsillitis (OR = 2.246), gastroesophageal reflux (OR = 7.518), adenoid hypertrophy (OR = 3.479), recurrent respiratory infections (OR = 2.195), and a family history of snoring (OR = 2.048) were risk factors for the development of combined SDB in children with asthma (p < 0.05). Asthma was poorly controlled in 19.6% of the children. SDB (OR = 2.391) and irregular medication use (OR = 2.571) were risk factors for poor asthma control (p < 0.05).
    Conclusions: Allergic rhinitis, chronic tonsillitis, gastroesophageal reflux, adenoid hypertrophy, recurrent respiratory infections, and a family history of snoring were independent risk factors for the development of SDB in children with asthma. SDB and irregular medication use were independent risk factors for poor asthma control.

    Abstract Icariin, a flavonoid glycoside, is extracted from Epimedium. This study aimed to investigate the vascular protective effects of icariin in type 1 diabetic rats by inhibiting high-mobility group box 1 (HMGB1)-related inflammation and exploring its potential mechanisms. The impact of icariin on vascular dysfunction was assessed in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats through vascular reactivity studies. Western blotting and immunofluorescence assays were performed to measure the expressions of target proteins. The release of HMGB1 and pro-inflammation cytokines were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results revealed that icariin administration enhanced acetylcholine-induced vasodilation in the aortas of diabetic rats. It also notably reduced the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin-8 (IL-8), IL-6, IL-1β, and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) in diabetic rats and high glucose (HG)-induced human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). The results also unveiled that the pro-inflammatory cytokines in the culture medium of HUVECs could be increased by rHMGB1. The increased release of HMGB1 and upregulated expressions of HMGB1-related inflammatory factors, including advanced glycation end products (RAGE), Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), and phosphorylated p65 (p-p65) in diabetic rats and HG-induced HUVECs, were remarkably suppressed by icariin. Notably, HMGB1 translocation from the nucleus to the cytoplasm in HUVECs under HG was inhibited by icariin. Meanwhile, icariin could activate G protein-coupled estrogen receptor (GPER) and sirt1. To explore the role of GPER and Sirt1 in the inhibitory effect of icariin on HMGB1 release and HMGB-induced inflammation, GPER inhibitor and Sirt1 inhibitor were used in this study. These inhibitors diminished the effects of icariin on HMGB1 release and HMGB1-induced inflammation. Specifically, the GPER inhibitor also negated the activation of Sirt1 by icariin. These findings suggest that icariin activates GPER and increases the expression of Sirt1, which in turn reduces HMGB1 translocation and release, thereby improving vascular endothelial function in type 1 diabetic rats by inhibiting inflammation.
