Abstract Background: Several subtypes of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) have been proposed. Most reports use small samples, and few have included Spanish-speaking participants.
Aim: To analyze the language profile and nonlinguistic deficits in a large sample of PPA Spanish monolingual participants.
Method: 177 individuals were diagnosed with PPA in a sample consisting of 69 men and 108 women (M
Results: 41.8% of the sample met the criteria for the logopenic variant (lvPPA), while 28.2% met the criteria for semantic (svPPA), 15.3% for lexical (lxvPPA), and 14.7% for nonfluent/agrammatic (nfvPPA) variants. Language difficulties were similar in all variants except for lxvPPA. Scores on Spontaneous Language, Auditory Comprehension, Repetition, and Naming were significantly higher for the lxvPPA group. Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices scores were significantly lower in lvPPA. Years of education correlated with all test scores, while age was negatively associated with naming. When the PPA variants were classified according to the traditional aphasia classification, discrepancies were evident. Furthermore, the most frequent type of aphasia was Amnesic, while the least frequent was Wernicke's aphasia.
Conclusion: The SWAB-R is useful in describing the clinical characteristics of aphasia for each variant of PPA, but quantitative scores from this battery are not capable of distinguishing between variants of PPA, with the exception of lxvPPA.

Abstract We report a series of small molecule proteolysis-targeting chimeras (PROTACs) that target the protein kinase p38α for degradation. These PROTACs are based on a ligand of the VHL E3 ubiquitin ligase, which is linked to an ATP competitive inhibitor of p38α. We provide evidence that these compounds can induce the specific degradation of p38α, but not p38β and other related kinases, at nanomolar concentrations in several mammalian cell lines. We also show that the p38α-specific PROTACs are soluble in aqueous solutions and therefore suitable for their administration to mice. Systemic administration of the PROTACs induces p38α degradation only in the liver, probably due to the PROTAC becoming inactivated in that organ, but upon local administration the PROTACs induce p38α degradation in mammary tumors. Our compounds provide an alternative to traditional chemical inhibitors for targeting p38α signaling in cultured cells and in vivo.

Abstract Background and objective: Vestibular disorders are linked to a group of pathologies that can affect the vestibular part, the auditory part, or both parts of the inner ear. The problem in this study is the little information that exists about the audiological profile of people suffering from vestibular disorders in Costa Rica. There are international research studies on this topic, but there are no records of studies conducted in the Costa Rican population. This is why there is interest in developing this research which aims to characterize the audiological profile and the levels of handicap in people with vestibular disorders under Centro Equilibra, Vertigo and Equilibrio consultation during the months of September to November 2019.
Patients and methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative, and observational analytical study with patients over 18 years old who attended Centro Equilibra. The main variables analysed were sex, age, personal pathological history, medical diagnosis, main vestibular symptoms, auditory manifestations, and levels of handicap.
Results: The data was obtained from 177 people; vestibular disorders occurred more in the female sex (ratio 2.6:1). The mean age was 56 years. Fifty-three point seven percent presented slight sensorineural hearing loss, gradually decreasing. Of the population, 33.9% presented tinnitus, mostly at high frequencies. In the adult population, 52% presented some level of hearing handicap, unlike older adults, where the majority (77%) did not present any level of handicap. People with vestibular disorders perceive greater physical handicap (83%).
Conclusions: Hearing loss was the most common hearing manifestation and although statistical analysis shows that it is not directly related to vestibular disorders, it is related to concomitant metabolic diseases. For this reason, it is necessary to promote the prevention of metabolic diseases as one of the measures to improve hearing health, even from an early age.

Abstract Background: Cultural psychiatry evaluates manifestations, symptoms of emotional distress and mental disorders in diverse cultural contexts; it also addresses social problems such as poverty, violence, inequalities between groups or social classes.
Objective: To present a narrative review of the most relevant cultural aspects in the context of clinical practice in psychiatry and to suggest some alternatives to improve the cultural competence of health care professionals.
Method: A narrative review was carried out of the most relevant articles in the area.
Results: Usually, the cultural argument is used to explain differences in observed prevalences in some mental disorders according to gender and geographical location. Cultural differences modify the expression of emotional distress and this can reduce the accuracy and affect the reliability and validity of the current diagnostic classification used in psychiatry. The American Psychiatric Association, in the most recent classification, revised cultural syndromes but only included a limited number of situations. Consequently, medical education and psychiatry must respond to diverse populations and provide quality care through the development of trans-cultural competence in the curriculum.
Conclusions: It should be considered that cultural differences modify the expression of distress and thereby undermine the validity and reliability for diagnoses in distinct cultural contexts. In an increasingly globalised world, future classifications may completely omit 'cultural syndromes'.

Abstract Chagas disease, caused by the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, is a zoonosis primarily found in rural areas of Latin America. It is considered a neglected tropical disease, and Triatoma dimidiata is the main vector of the parasite in Central America. Despite efforts, Chagas disease continues to be a public health concern, and vector control remains a primary tool to reduce transmission. In this study, we tested the hypothesis that highly abundant bacteria in the gut of T. dimidiata inhibit the growth of T. cruzi. To achieve this, bacterial diversity in the gut of T. dimidiata specimens from Costa Rica was characterized by metabarcoding of the 16S rRNA, microbial isolation was performed, and the effect of freeze-dried supernatants of the isolates on T. cruzi was investigated. Metabarcoding showed that the most abundant genera in the gut were Corynebacterium, Tsukamurella, Brevibacterium, and Staphylococcus. Barcoding and sequences comparison confirmed that 8 of the 30 most abundant amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) were isolated, and 2 of them showed an inhibitory effect on the growth of T. cruzi epimastigotes. These bacteria correspond to isolates of Tsukamurella and Brevibacterium, which were respectively the second and sixth most abundant ASVs in the gut of T. dimidiata. Notably, only the isolate of Brevibacterium showed a significant difference in growth inhibition against epimastigotes of both T. cruzi strains tested. These findings suggest that the gut microbiota of T. dimidiata may play an active role in modulating parasite development.

Abstract Background: Patients with aphasia can present a type of acalculia referred to as aphasic acalculia.
Aims: To investigate the correlation and to test regression models for one- and two-digit calculation skills using verbal and nonverbal predictors.
Methods and procedures: We selected an aphasia sample of 119 men and 81 women with a mean age of 57.37 years (SD = 15.56) and an average level of education of 13.52 years (SD = 4.08). Spanish versions of the Western Aphasia Battery and Boston Diagnostic Aphasia Examination, plus a Written Calculation test, were individually administered. The calculation section of the Western Aphasia Battery and the Written Calculation tests were used to pinpoint calculation difficulties.
Outcomes and results: Calculation difficulties were more severe in Global and Mixed non-fluent aphasia; they were very similar in Broca, Conduction, and Amnesic Aphasia. All correlations between the two calculation subtests and the other subtests of the Western Aphasia Battery were statistically significant. Calculation subtests correlated negatively with age and positively with schooling. Sex and time post-onset did not show any correlation with the calculation scores. Education, Reading, Block Design, and Raven's Colored Progressive Matrices were significant predictors of Western Aphasia Battery Calculation. Writing was the only significant predictor of the Written Calculation scores.
Conclusions: Nonverbal abilities were predictors of calculation tests, whereas agraphia defects were predictors of the Written Calculation test. Therefore, calculation abilities can be regarded both as written language-dependent and verbal language-independent.

Abstract Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) is a common disease that usually limits the patient's independence by affecting their motor function. SCI patients usually present neuroplasticity, which allows brain signals transmission through spread pathways. Some innovative rehabilitation therapies, such as functional electrical stimulation (FES) or Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) jointly with motor neuroprostheses, provide hope for functional restoration. BCIs require the analysis of event-related EEG potentials (ERPs). Movement-related cortical potentials (MRCPs) and event-related desynchroni-zation and synchronization (ERD/ERS) are the most commonly studied ERPs during motor activity. ERPs of healthy subjects may vary from SCI patients. Thus, this study aimed to compare ERPs between healthy subjects and SCI patients during upper-limb movements (forearm supination and pronation, and hand open). Differences between controls and SCI patients were shown in terms of ERPs' amplitude as well as in topographic maps. Changes in amplitude were more substantial in ERD potentials than in MRCPs, while topographic maps showed better localization of all features in healthy patients. The level of SCI injury determines the patients' mobility. A comparison between complete, partial and no motor function subjects showed lower values of feature's amplitudes in the latter group.Clinical Relevance- This demonstrates the existence of significant statistical differences between healthy and SCI subjects, and might be helpful when performing SCI rehabilitation techniques such as designing BCI and neuroprostheses, or analyzing and understanding the brain plasticity process.
