Abstract Optimizing the initial live feed is critical to success in fish larviculture in terms of both larval health and productivity. It is also vitally important due to the significant cost of provisioning live feeds. Glaxiids are high-value diadromous fish species found in parts of the Southern Hemisphere, which are wild-harvested and sold for human consumption in their larval form. In the emerging aquaculture of galaxiids, the live feed makes up a great proportion of the production cycle and is therefore a significant factor in achieving the economic viability of their production. In New Zealand, the endemic galaxiid species giant kōkopu (Galaxias argenteus) is considered suitable for aquaculture; however, little is known of their larval-feeding requirements. This study compares the growth performance and survival of giant kōkopu larvae over a four-week period when fed different proportions of first-molt Artemia nauplii (instar-I) and enriched, second-molt-onward Artemia (instar-II+) for different durations. The larvae in the treatment group which received the greatest proportion of Instar-I Artemia for the longest duration had the lowest mean wet weight and survival, leading to the production of the lowest total biomass of fish larvae when compared to the other feed treatments. The feed treatment that received only instar-II+ Artemia achieved an equally best total productivity. While the treatment fed a partial initial duration of mixed instar-I and instar-II+ Artemia achieved the same total productivity, the individual larvae were heavier and their body length was longer. The latter feed treatment appears to offer the best balance between the availability of feed particles in the optimum size range and a higher level of digestibility given that instar-I Artemia had higher levels of highly unsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Abstract Toothpicks are commonly used but rarely ingested. Unlike most foreign bodies, if accidentally swallowed these rarely spontaneously pass. The duodenum has been reported as the most common site of toothpick foreign body lodgement in the upper gastrointestinal tract. We report the case of a 57-year-old presenting with recurrent urosepsis after non recognition of a toothpick impaction in the duodenum with fistulisation into the right renal pelvis. Endoscopic removal of the foreign body was successful in management of the urosepsis.

Abstract We report an approach to the diastereoselective synthesis of 1,2-disubstituted heterocyclic aziridines. A Brønsted acid-catalyzed conjugate addition of anilines to trisubstituted heterocyclic chloroalkenes provides an intermediate 1,2-chloroamine. Diastereocontrol was found to vary significantly with solvent selection, with computational modelling confirming selective, spontaneous fragmentation in the presence of trace acids, proceeding through a pseudo-cyclic, protonated intermediate and transition state. These chloroamines can then be converted to the aziridine by treatment with LiHMDS with high stereochemical fidelity. This solvent-induced stereochemical enrichment thereby enables an efficient route to rare cis-aziridines with high dr. The scope, limitations, and mechanistic origins of selectivity are also presented.

Abstract The selection of artificial feed is critical to the success of larviculture of fin fish and requires knowledge of the varied species-specific dietary and nutritional requirements. With the emergence of commercial aquaculture of giant kōkopu, Galaxias argenteus, there is a need to understand the species-specific needs for artificial feeds in larviculture. Consequently, this study compares three commercial artificial dry feeds; Otohime, Artemac and O.range on the growth of recently weaned giant kōkopu. Larvae fed with Otohime outperformed both Artemac and O.range treatments by achieving the highest wet weight after 67 days, greater by at least 47% on average than both Artemac and O.range. These differences in larval performance are likely to be due to the higher protein:energy ratio and EPA content of Otohime. High DHA and ARA in the diets in absolute terms or in relation to EPA did not result in added benefit for growth performance. This study provides an important first step in identifying the nutritional needs of larval giant kōkopu which can assist in improving their commercial aquaculture production.

Abstract Objectives: To investigate the injury characteristics and insurance cost of anterior cruciate ligament injuries in sub-elite football players in New South Wales, Australia.
    Design: Descriptive epidemiological study.
Methods: Three years of insurance records (2018-2020) was used to describe anterior cruciate ligament injury costs and characteristics. Concomitant injuries and the mechanism of injury were determined by analysing the injury descriptions. Claim characteristics and costs are presented by age group (junior = 7-17 years, senior = 18-34 years, and veteran = 35 + years) and sex. Categorical data (including age-groups and sex) are presented as counts and percentages and analysed using a Chi squared or Fisher's exact test. Cost data are reported as means ± standard deviation with 95 % confidence intervals.
Results: Over the course of three football seasons (2018-2020), 786 anterior cruciate ligament injuries were reported to the injury insurance company. The total insurance cost was AU$3,614,742 with direct injury insurance costs accounting for 36.3 % of the total costs. The mean indirect insurance costs were six-fold higher than direct insurance costs (AU$11,458 vs AU$1914). Isolated injuries had an average cost of $4466 whilst concomitant injuries had an average cost of $4951. Surgical costs are excluded from direct cost calculations. The peak injury count occurred in the first month of all three football seasons, immediately after the pre-season.
Conclusions: Anterior cruciate ligament injuries represent a substantial economic burden to the insurer and individual. The cost data provided can be used for future economic and modelling studies.

Abstract Using live feed in fish larviculture is more expensive and challenging than formulated feeds, incentivizing the early weaning of larvae. In New Zealand, the aquaculture of larval giant kōkopu, Galaxias argenteus, is being commercialized because of its high value and to supplement the wild fishery. As an emerging aquaculture species, inefficiencies remain in the production process, inhibiting financial viability. This study reports on the ability of these larvae to consume formulated larval diets across four ages (18, 21, 25, and 28 days after hatching, DAH) at each of the three daily feeding events (Morning, Midday, and Afternoon) during commercial production. At 18 DAH, little to no formulated feed was consumed at either of the three feeding events throughout the day. At 21 DAH, mean gut fullness increased and the number of fish with empty stomachs reduced by the end of the Morning and Afternoon feeding events. Both variables improved further for larvae at 25 and 28 DAH. Formulated feed consumption did not differ between larvae aged 25 and 28 DAH indicating that 3 days of feeding live feed could be removed from the feed regime. This change would save 13% on the cost of live feed; however, further research is required to determine the potential impacts on growth and survival.

Abstract Despite emerging research questioning the long-term effect of purposeful heading on players' brain health, heading-related perspectives and behaviours of stakeholders in amateur football in Australia (a country without heading guidelines) remain unknown. This study aimed to explore the current heading-related perspectives and behaviours of football stakeholders. In total, 290 players (aged over 11 years), 54 coaches, 34 non-coaching staff and 14 medical staff completed the survey. Of the 290 players, 56.5% reported being formally trained in heading, with female players less likely to be trained than male players (

Abstract The development of methods to allow the selective acylative dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) of tetra-substituted lactols is a recognised synthetic challenge. In this manuscript, a highly enantioselective isothiourea-catalysed acylative DKR of tetra-substituted morpholinone and benzoxazinone-derived lactols is reported. The scope and limitations of this methodology have been developed, with high enantioselectivity and good to excellent yields (up to 89%, 99:1 er) observed across a broad range of substrate derivatives incorporating substitution at N(4) and C(2), di- and spirocyclic substitution at C(5)- and C(6)-position, as well as benzannulation (>35 examples in total). The DKR process is amenable to scale-up on a 1 g laboratory scale. The factors leading to high selectivity in this DKR process have been probed through computation, with an N-C=O•••isothiouronium interaction identified as key to producing ester products in highly enantioenriched form.

Abstract A general and highly enantioselective method for the preparation of tetra-substituted 3-hydroxyphthalide esters via isothiourea-catalysed acylative dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) is reported. Using (2S,3R)-HyperBTM (5 mol%) as the catalyst, the scope and limitations of this methodology have been extensively probed, with high enantioselectivity and good to excellent yields observed (>40 examples, up to 99%, 99:1 er). Substitution of the aromatic core within the 3-hydroxyphthalide skeleton, as well as aliphatic and aromatic substitution at C(3)-, is readily tolerated. A diverse range of anhydrides, including those from bioactive and pharmaceutically relevant acids, can also be used. The high enantioselectivity observed in this DKR process has been probed computation, with a key substrate heteroatom donor O•••acyl-isothiouronium interaction identified through DFT analysis as necessary for enantiodiscrimination.
