Abstract This article introduces M-GRCT, a circular economy decision support model for the design of recyclable waste management systems in low-income municipalities. The model allows for performing calculations on a set of two scenarios integrating a sociocultural dynamics assessment, this being a characteristic feature of this type of municipalities. The model also integrates the analysis of the remaining variables usually addressed in solid waste management schemes while considering topics such as reduction of the carbon footprint due to activities such as the transport of recyclable waste, the generation of leachates, the generation of greenhouse gases and the promotion of an increase in the number of associated recyclers and selective routes. The economic evaluation of the different implementation scenarios is supported by a dynamic tool called DATA4 (a macro-type array accompanied by two control panels programmed in Visual Basic and dashboards by Power BI). M-GRCT constitutes a tool for the promotion of good environmental practices and the identification of strategies for the promotion of local development mechanisms. Results provided by the model contrast with those obtained by traditional linear economy approaches. An illustrative example of the application of the M-GRCT model is shown. The model was used to simulate the municipal solid waste managing system of the municipality of Guateque (Colombia). The results show the importance of integrating both economic and environmental costs to optimally allocate governmental and private resources when the recycling rate is expected to increase in the next 10 years.

Abstract Motivation: Short-read whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is a vital tool for clinical applications and basic research. Genetic divergence from the reference genome, repetitive sequences and sequencing bias reduces the performance of variant calling using short-read alignment, but the loss in recall and specificity has not been adequately characterized. To benchmark short-read variant calling, we used 36 diverse clinical Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) isolates dually sequenced with Illumina short-reads and PacBio long-reads. We systematically studied the short-read variant calling accuracy and the influence of sequence uniqueness, reference bias and GC content.
Results: Reference-based Illumina variant calling demonstrated a maximum recall of 89.0% and minimum precision of 98.5% across parameters evaluated. The approach that maximized variant recall while still maintaining high precision (<99%) was tuning the mapping quality filtering threshold, i.e. confidence of the read mapping (recall = 85.8%, precision = 99.1%, MQ ≥ 40). Additional masking of repetitive sequence content is an alternative conservative approach to variant calling that increases precision at cost to recall (recall = 70.2%, precision = 99.6%, MQ ≥ 40). Of the genomic positions typically excluded for Mtb, 68% are accurately called using Illumina WGS including 52/168 PE/PPE genes (34.5%). From these results, we present a refined list of low confidence regions across the Mtb genome, which we found to frequently overlap with regions with structural variation, low sequence uniqueness and low sequencing coverage. Our benchmarking results have broad implications for the use of WGS in the study of Mtb biology, inference of transmission in public health surveillance systems and more generally for WGS applications in other organisms.

Abstract Background: The arcuate eminence (AE) is an anatomically consistent bony protrusion located on the upper surface of the petrous bone that has been previously studied as a reference for lateral skull base approaches. There is a paucity of information in the neurosurgical literature seeking to improve the safety of the extended middle cranial fossa (MCF) approach using detailed morphometric analysis of the AE.
Objective: To evaluate the use of the AE as an anatomical landmark to help with early identification of the internal acoustic canal (IAC) in MCF approaches by means of a cadaveric study, using a new morphometric reference termed the "M-point."
Methods: A total of 40 dry temporal bones and 2 formalin-preserved, latex-injected cadaveric heads were used. The M-point was established as a new anatomic reference by identifying the intersection of a line perpendicular to the alignment of the petrous ridge (PR), originating from the midpoint of the AE, with the PR itself. Subsequent anatomical measurements were performed to measure the distance between M-point and IAC. Additional distances, including PR length and the anteroposterior and lateral AE surfaces, were also measured.
Results: The mean distance between the M-point and the center of the IAC was 14.9 mm (SD ± 2.09), offering a safe drilling area during an MCF approach.
Conclusions: This study provides novel information on identification of a new anatomic reference point known as the M-point that that can be used to improve early surgical identification of the IAC.

Abstract Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common etiologic agent in severe infections of the lower respiratory tract in children with a high mortality rate. However, there are still no licensed vaccines for RSV. In this study, we investigated a putative vaccine based on M

Abstract In the field of image processing, noise represents an unwanted component that can occur during signal acquisition, transmission, and storage. In this paper, we introduce an efficient method that incorporates redescending M-estimators within the framework of Wiener estimation. The proposed approach effectively suppresses impulsive, additive, and multiplicative noise across varied densities. Our proposed filter operates on both grayscale and color images; it uses local information obtained from the Wiener filter and robust outlier rejection based on Insha and Hampel's tripartite redescending influence functions. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through qualitative and quantitative results, using metrics such as PSNR, MAE, and SSIM.

Abstract: ... by Jaafar (GCN250), defining CN at 30 m spatial resolution based on a National Land Cover published in 2014 ...

Abstract The Curve Number (CN) method is widely used to estimate runoff volumes, flood hydrographs, maximum flows, as well as an input for hydrological models, representing the interaction between soil and water. We developed a consistent and validated, gridded dataset for Chile, CN30-CL, based on the methodology proposed by Jaafar (GCN250), defining CN at 30 m spatial resolution based on a National Land Cover published in 2014 and the hydrologic soil group global data product (HYSOGs250m) released by 2018. CN30-CL was validated against CN estimates from previous national studies performed at 34 basins, where precipitation and flow records were used to estimate CN for these precipitation events. The validation process shows a good performance for Central and South Chile, presenting some differences for basins located in the Northern part of the country (arid basins). The curve numbers obtained with CN30-CL agree with the estimates of previous studies (based on records), concluding that this product delivers reasonable values. This database allows to study the effect of the heterogeneity of the CN values over a basin, as well as, for example, to explore the dependency between CN and snow line (that defines rainfall contributing area in snow driven basins) or study the impact on runoff linked to a possible change in the type of land cover, which can be related to fires, increasing aridity, anthropic action, climate change, among others. The methodology applied is flexible and easily adaptable, providing a new database that serves as a reference for consultants and researchers.

Abstract Thioredoxins (TRXs) are well-known redox signalling players, which carry out post-translational modifications in target proteins. Chloroplast TRXs are divided into different types and have central roles in light energy uptake and the regulation of primary metabolism. The isoforms TRX m1, m2, and m4 from Arabidopsis thaliana are considered functionally related. Knowing their key position in the hub of plant metabolism, we hypothesized that the impairment of the TRX m signalling would not only have harmful consequences on chloroplast metabolism but also at different levels of plant development. To uncover the physiological and developmental processes that depend on TRX m signalling, we carried out a comprehensive study of Arabidopsis single, double, and triple mutants defective in the TRX m1, m2, and m4 proteins. As light and redox signalling are closely linked, we investigated the response to high light (HL) of the plants that are gradually compromised in TRX m signalling. We provide experimental evidence relating the lack of TRX m and the appearance of novel phenotypic features concerning mesophyll structure, stomata biogenesis, and stomatal conductance. We also report new data indicating that the isoforms of TRX m fine-tune the response to HL, including the accumulation of the protective pigment anthocyanin. These results reveal novel signalling functions for the TRX m and underline their importance for plant growth and fulfilment of the acclimation/response to HL conditions.
