    Abstract Tree modeling has been extensively studied in computer graphics. Recent advances in the development of high-resolution sensors and data processing techniques are extremely useful for collecting 3D datasets of real-world trees and generating increasingly plausible branching structures. The wide availability of versatile acquisition platforms allows us to capture multi-view images and scanned data that can be used for guided 3D tree modeling. In this paper, we carry out a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art methods for the 3D modeling of botanical tree geometry by taking input data from real scenarios. A wide range of studies has been proposed following different approaches. The most relevant contributions are summarized and classified into three categories: (1) procedural reconstruction, (2) geometry-based extraction, and (3) image-based modeling. In addition, we describe other approaches focused on the reconstruction process by adding additional features to achieve a realistic appearance of the tree models. Thus, we provide an overview of the most effective procedures to assist researchers in the photorealistic modeling of trees in geometry and appearance. The article concludes with remarks and trends for promising research opportunities in 3D tree modeling using real-world data.

    Abstract Purpose: Vitamin D deficiency is related to metabolic disturbances. Indeed, a poor vitamin D status has been usually detected in patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD). However, the relationship between vitamin D and CVD risk factors in young adults remains controversial at present. This study aimed to examine the association between circulating 25-hydroxivitamin D (25(OH)D) and CVD risk factors in young adults.
    Methods: The present cross-sectional study included a cohort of 177 young adults aged 18-25 years old (65% women). 25(OH)D serum concentrations were assessed using a competitive chemiluminescence immunoassay. Fasting CVD risk factors (i.e., body composition, blood pressure, glucose metabolism, lipid profile, liver, and inflammatory markers) were determined by routine methods. A panel of 63 oxylipins and endocannabinoids (eCBs) was also analyzed by targeted metabolomics.
    Results: Circulating 25(OH)D concentrations were inversely associated with a wide range of CVD risk factors including anthropometrical (all P ≤ 0.005), body composition (all P ≤ 0.038), glucose metabolism (all P ≤ 0.029), lipid profile (all P < 0.035), liver (all P ≤ 0.011), and pro-inflammatory biomarkers (all P ≤ 0.030). No associations of serum 25(OH)D concentrations were found with pro-inflammatory markers (all P ≥ 0.104), omega-6 and omega-3 oxylipins, nor eCBs concentrations or their analogs (all P ≥ 0.05).
    Conclusion: The present findings support the idea that 25(OH)D could be a useful predictor of CVD risk in young individuals.

    Abstract Mixed reality (MR) enables a novel way to visualize virtual objects on real scenarios considering physical constraints. This technology arises with other significant advances in the field of sensors fusion for human-centric 3D capturing. Recent advances for scanning the user environment, real-time visualization and 3D vision using ubiquitous systems like smartphones allow us to capture 3D data from the real world. In this paper, a disruptive application for assessing the status of indoor infrastructures is proposed. The installation and maintenance of hidden facilities such as water pipes, electrical lines and air conditioning tubes, which are usually occluded behind the wall, supposes tedious and inefficient tasks. Most of these infrastructures are digitized but they cannot be visualized onsite. In this research, we focused on the development of a new application (GEUINF) to be launched on smartphones that are capable of capturing 3D data of the real world by depth sensing. This information is relevant to determine the user position and orientation. Although previous approaches used fixed markers for this purpose, our application enables the estimation of both parameters with a centimeter accuracy without them. This novelty is possible since our method is based on a matching process between reconstructed walls of the real world and 3D planes of the replicated world in a virtual environment. Our markerless approach is based on scanning planar surfaces of the user environment and then, these are geometrically aligned with their corresponding virtual 3D entities. In a preprocessing phase, the 2D CAD geometry available from an architectural project is used to generate 3D models of an indoor building structure. In real time, these virtual elements are tracked with the real ones modeled by using ARCore library. Once the alignment between virtual and real worlds is done, the application enables the visualization, navigation and interaction with the virtual facility networks in real-time. Thus, our method may be used by private companies and public institutions responsible of the indoor facilities management and also may be integrated with other applications focused on indoor navigation.

    Abstract The pathways and timescales of vibrational energy flow in nitromethane are investigated in both gas and condensed phases using classical molecular mechanics, with a particular focus on relaxation in liquid water. We monitor the flow of excess energy deposited in vibrational modes of nitromethane into the surrounding solvent. A marked energy flux anisotropy is found when nitromethane is immersed in liquid water, with a preferential flow to those water molecules in contact to the nitro group. The factors that permit such anisotropic energy relaxation are discussed, along with the potential implications on the molecule's non-equilibrium dynamics. In addition, the energy flux analysis allows us to identify the solvent motions responsible for the uptake of solute energy, confirming the crucial role of water librations. Finally, we also show that no anisotropic vibrational energy relaxation occurs when nitromethane is surrounded by argon gas.

    Abstract Olive oil production shapes the socio-economic and environmental life of many areas of the Mediterranean basin, especially southern Spain, the highest olive oil-producing region worldwide. Olive grove cultivation is tending to intensify from traditional low-density to intensive and high-density cropping systems, which might result in higher environmental impacts. The aim of this study is to estimate the environmental impacts, carbon (C) footprint and carbon balance of producing virgin origin olive oil in Spain from four traditional rainfed, four irrigated, and three intensive olive farms, including the processing phase. Environmental impacts of producing 1 kg of unpacked virgin olive oil at the farm and industrial phases were quantified with the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) tool and a "cradle-to-gate" approach using data from surveys at these farms and 12 olive oil mills. On average, the farming phase accounted for 76.3% of the EIs. Therefore, to reduce the impact of the virgin olive oils production, most of the efforts should be made especially in the farming phase. Despite the high variability between seasons and between independent replicates of the same farming system, intensive farming had significant higher impacts on most environmental impact categories than traditional rainfed farming, mainly due to the application of nitrogen fertilizer, plant protection products and herbicides. In terms of climate change, the environmental impact of the functional unit is in the ranges of 1.80-2.41, 1.59-2.78 and 2.28-3.26 kg of CO

    Abstract Background: Family history of obesity is known to increase the odds of developing childhood obesity in the offspring, but its influence in underlying molecular complications remains unexplored.
    Subjects/methods: Here, we investigated a population-based cohort comprising children with obesity, with and without parental obesity (PO+, N = 20; PO-, N = 29), and lean healthy children as controls (N = 30), from whom plasma and erythrocyte samples were collected to characterize their multi-elemental profile, inflammatory status, as well as carbohydrate and lipid metabolisms.
    Results: We found parental obesity to be associated with unhealthier outcomes in children, as reflected in increased blood insulin levels and reduced insulin sensitivity, unfavorable lipid profile, and pro-inflammatory milieu. This was accompanied by moderate alterations in the content of trace elements, including increased copper-to-zinc ratios and iron deficiency in circulation, as well as metal accumulation within erythrocytes.
    Conclusions: Therefore, we hypothesize that family history of obesity could be an important risk factor in modulating the characteristic multi-elemental alterations behind childhood obesity, which in turn could predispose to boost related comorbidities and metabolic complications.

    Abstract Mining environmental liabilities generate environmental pollution. The objective of the present study was to determine the yield of white clover (Trifolium repens) and orchard grass (Dactylis glomerata) cultivated in mining environmental passives adding black earth and compost as a substrate in the Buenaventura Julcani Huancavelica Company. The treatments were the combinations: 4: 3.1: 3.1: 3:1.1 kg of RP: RP, TN: RP, C: RP, TN, C respectively. They were distributed in four treatments with twelve experimental units for each species of leguminous and gramineous grass, we worked according to the completely randomized design (DCA) with a 2 x 4 factorial arrangement, the experimental unit being a treatment with twelve repetitions. The variables evaluated were: germination percentage (TG) and stem survival percentage (TST). For the statistical analysis, the SPSS software was used.

    Abstract The aim of this work was to study the effect of the particle size range, the freeze casting temperature and sintering temperature on the capillarity performance and mechanical properties of Ni wicks manufactured by freeze-casting. The use of Ni/camphene-polystyrene suspensions creates wicks with an open porosity above 80% and average pore sizes of 38 μm to 17 μm by tailoring the particle size ranges and freezing temperatures employed. The incorporation of PS and the use of a continuous freeze-casting process reduces the particle sedimentation and generates a highly interconnected pore structure with regular pore sizes across the sample. The capillarity performances exhibit a fast and complete water adsorption, especially in Ni wicks freeze-casted at 10 °C and sintered at 800 °C, but only when the smaller particle size range is used do Ni wicks achieve sufficient mechanical strength.
