Abstract Background: In recent years, there has been an increase in reports of perioral vascular complications resulting from filler injections, such as necrosis of the lip or alar rim, occlusion, and in severe cases, blindness. Conversely, the use of perioral arterial flaps is becoming more prevalent in the treatment of cleft lips, cancer, and trauma. A thorough understanding of perioral arteries is essential to minimize complications and maximize the success of these flaps. However, the course of the facial artery (FA) in the perioral region remains incompletely understood. The aim of this study was to describe the variations of the FA in the perioral region.
Methods: We dissected 52 embalmed and formaldehyde-fixed Vietnamese cadavers. We then studied the size and distribution of perioral arteries in 102 specimens.
Results: The superior labial artery (SLA) was the most common branch, occurring in 87.25% of cadavers, followed by the inferior labial artery (ILA) at 78.43%. The SLA primarily originated above the mouth corner (cheilion), accounting for 91.01% of cases, and predominantly exhibited a tortuous course within the submucosa (78.65%). The ILA's branching pattern varied, but it was primarily located below the cheilion (91.25%). The ILA also followed a twisted path, generally within the submucosa. The ILA exhibited two patterns: the typical pattern, distributed at the vermilion border of the lower lip (8.82%), and the horizontal labiomental artery pattern, which ran horizontally in the middle of the lower lip area (69.61%). At their origin, the SLA and ILA had average external diameters of 1.29 mm and 1.28 mm, respectively.
Conclusion: Numerous anatomical variations in the FA in the perioral region were found. A detailed anatomic description, suggested landmarks, and angiography before the procedure will be useful to help doctors avoid complications.

Abstract Clarithromycin is an antibiotic commonly used to treat Helicobacter pylori infections. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advises caution before prescribing clarithromycin to patients with cardiac diseases. This study aimed to evaluate cardiac events after anti-H pylori treatment in patients with coronary artery disease. A retrospective 5-year study was conducted on outpatients who received anti-H pylori therapy. Among the 7855 patients receiving therapy, 228 patients (2.9%) underwent angiography with coronary artery disease before therapy, and 193 patients received clarithromycin. Clarithromycin users seemed not to be at risk for cardiac events as compared with non-clarithromycin users at 3 months (4.7% vs 2.9%, P = .63) and 1 year (10.9% vs 5.7%, P = .35). Neither life-threatening dysrhythmia nor cardiac death was noted. The risk factors for cardiac events within 3 months after therapy were smoker (OR:5.38, 95% CI:1.39-20.78), and events within 1 year were smoker (OR:3.8, 95% CI:1.41-10.22), and diabetes mellitus (OR:5.68, 95% CI:1.9-16.98). Among patients with coronary artery disease who received anti-H pylori therapy, short-term cardiac events did not increase in clarithromycin users but should be considered in diabetic and smoking patients.

Abstract In industrial processes, control charts are useful tools to monitor the quality of products and detect possibly out-of-control processes. While many types of control charts have been available for data analysts, they were developed by assuming that the variables are precisely measured. In applications, however, measurement error is ubiquitous when data are falsely recorded by investigators or imprecisely collected by unadjusted machines. Even though the impacts of measurement error for different types of control charts have been explored, error-corrected control charts are still unavailable. In this study, we propose a new dispersion control chart with error correction to fill out this research gap. Our key idea is to convert the observed distribution-free process variables into a flexible sign statistic, and then adopt a function to adjust the measurement error effects on the sign statistic. Finally, we develop an exponentially weight-moving average dispersion control chart with measurement error correction based on the corrected sign statistic. The proposed error-corrected dispersion control chart not only eliminates measurement error effects, but also provides more reliable control limits for monitoring process dispersion. Throughout the numerical examination, we find that the proposed error-corrected dispersion control chart is effective in handling moderate and large levels of measurement error and shows good out-of-control detection performance. Finally, the proposed error-corrected dispersion control chart is implemented in the semiconductor data.

Abstract Exposure to cadmium may increase risk of urolithiasis, but the results remain inconclusive. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to access the association between cadmium exposure and urolithiasis. We searched Medline/PubMed, Embase, Web of Science Core Collection, and Cochrane Central for studies. The primary outcome was the incidence of urolithiasis compared to reference groups. We used relative risk as the summary effect measure. This meta-analysis included eight observational studies and divided into 39 study populations. Among 63,051 subjects, 5018 (7.96%) individuals had urolithiasis. The results indicated that people with an increment of 0.1 μg/g creatinine in urinary cadmium had a 2% increased risk of urolithiasis (pooled relative risk [RR], 1.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01-1.03) and there is no difference in the risk of urolithiasis in high and low cadmium exposure levels. Meanwhile, people with an increment of 0.1 μg/L in urinary cadmium had a 4% increased risk of urolithiasis (pooled RR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.02-1.07). Our findings also showed similar associations in both sex, different region (Sweden, China, and Thailand), general and occupational population. The results indicate that cadmium exposure was significantly associated with an elevated risk of urolithiasis. Therefore, it is imperative to take steps to minimize cadmium exposure.

Abstract In this study, we used a multimaterial three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology and porous composite filaments (Lay-Fomm, Gel-Lay, and Lay-Felt) to fabricate solid phase extraction (SPE) columns for the enhanced extraction of multiple metal ions. When employed as sample pretreatment devices in an automatic flow injection analysis/inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) system, these 3D-printed SPE columns performed the near-complete extractions of Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb ions from natural water samples prior to ICP-MS determination. After optimizing the column fabrication, the extraction conditions, and the automatic analysis system, the column packed with the porous composite Lay-Fomm 40 was found to provide the highest extraction performance-the extraction efficiencies of the listed metal ions were all greater than 99.2%, and the detection limits of the method ranged from 0.3 to 6.7 ng L

Abstract Purpose of review: Occupational asbestos exposure has been extensively linked to various cancers, with ongoing debates regarding its association with kidney cancer. This study aims to investigate the correlation between occupational asbestos exposure and kidney cancer incidence. Additionally, potential influencing factors are analyzed to enhance the comprehension of the relationship between asbestos exposure and kidney cancer.
Recent finding: While asbestos has established strong associations with malignant mesothelioma and lung cancer, its connection to other malignancies such as gastric, colorectal, and kidney cancers remains under scrutiny. The current study presents mixed opinions on the relationship between asbestos exposure and kidney cancer. Our analysis revealed a potential association between asbestos exposure and the incidence of kidney cancer. Notably, among different types of asbestos, exposure to amphibole appeared to be particularly linked to a higher incident risk of kidney cancer.

Abstract Estimation of population attributable fraction (PAF) requires unbiased relative risk (RR) by using either Levin's or Miettinen's formula, on which decision depends on the available exposure information in reference group, not the types of studies. For ecological studies and studies with aggregated outcomes, once having unbiased RRs, Levin's and Miettinen's formulae would provide identical PAF estimates. PAF could also be applied to compare relative burdens of disease between countries across time, which is an additional information in consideration of country-level policies.

Abstract Rationale: Prolonged cholestasis is a rare complication associated with endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP).
Patient concerns: A 68-year-old man who presented with worsening cholestasis after ERCP for the removal of a common bile duct stone.
Diagnosis: Total bilirubin increased up to 35.2 mg/dL after the 21st day post-ERCP. A percutaneous liver biopsy was performed and drug-related cholestasis was suspected as occurring as a result of the contrast agent.
Interventions: Oral ursodeoxycholic acid and cholestyramine were prescribed to the patient.
Outcomes: By the 7th week post-ERCP, the patient's symptoms and markers of physiological health began to resolve. The bilirubin returned to normal levels on the 106th day post-ERCP. We reviewed the literature for studies of 9 patients with jaundice more than 30 days post-ERCP, the peak of total serum bilirubin occurred on 16th ± 7th days and the recovery followed after mean time of 54th ± 22th days.
Lessons: Although the cholestasis was prolonged, the outcome was favorable after medical therapy. There were no long-term consequences for the patient.

Abstract A 9 yr old male miniature poodle presented with acute diarrhea, vomiting, and a distended abdomen. A large and firm mass was palpated in the caudal abdomen. Radiography showed a large soft-tissue mass in the mid ventral abdomen. The mass was mildly contrast-enhancing and in contact with the right cranial aspect of the bladder on computed tomography. The mass was heterogeneous with minimal blood flow on Doppler examination. Surgery confirmed its origin of the urinary bladder, and it was diagnosed leiomyosarcoma on pathology. This is the first report of extraluminal leiomyosarcoma of the bladder wall with imaging characteristics using various modalities.
