Abstract: ... from the San Francisco Valley-SFV wineries, and to compare them with commercial monovarietal wines of the same cultivars ...

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the phenolic composition, sugars, and organic acids by HPLC-DAD/RID, and the antioxidant capacity of 100% commercial 'Syrah' and 'Tempranillo' red wines from the San Francisco Valley-SFV wineries, and to compare them with commercial monovarietal wines of the same cultivars from countries such as South Africa, Spain, Chile, and Australia. In total, 25 phenolic compounds were quantified and classified into chemical groups in all wines (phenolics acids, flavanones, flavan-3-ols, flavonols, anthocyanins, and stilbenes). Among these, catechin, procyanidins B1 and B2, lactic acid, and antioxidant capacity were highlighted as the markers responsible for the typification of SFV wines when compared to wines from temperate regions. The data reported here contribute to the knowledge of the potential for producing quality wines in tropical climate regions. The wines of cultivars 'Syrah' and 'Tempranillo' are consolidated among the wineries in the SFV region, Brazil, due to their excellent adaptation to the semi-arid tropical climate. The SFV recently applied for a wine geographical indication as its wines are young with tropical climate typicity. This study shows that it is possible to differentiate SFV Syrah and Tempranillo wines from other world regions by HPLC molecular profile using chemometric techniques.

Abstract: ... police officers from the State Penitentiary of Francisco Beltrão-PR, Brazil. Their sociodemographic and laboratory ...

Abstract Correctional workers form a high-priority group for tuberculosis control measures because of their high exposure and risk. This cross-sectional study conducted in April and May 2022 included 71 criminal police officers from the State Penitentiary of Francisco Beltrão-PR, Brazil. Their sociodemographic and laboratory data were collected. Latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) was assessed using a QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus in-tube test kit. Binary logistic regression was applied to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) of the LTBI predictors. The prevalence of LTBI was 22.6% (95% CI, 12.8-32.2%). Factors associated with LTBI were age > 43 years (OR, 0.18; 95% CI, 0.04-0.70; p < 0.014) and the use of medications (OR, 5.13; 95% CI, 1.40-18.87; p < 0.014). The prevalence was close to that estimated worldwide for LTBI in correctional workers, reinforcing the need for occupational health control measures consisting of regular screening and treatment of positive cases of latent infection among correctional workers to reduce the risk of illness and spread of infection in the penitentiary system and community.

Abstract: ... Cichla ocellaris) from the Moxotó Reservoir in the São Francisco River, Brazil. The enriched δ13C signatures ... of fish otoliths in freshwater environments in the São Francisco River, and shed light ...

Abstract Fish otoliths store geochemical and isotopic signatures that can be used as proxies for environmental conditions in ecological investigations. We investigated the δ13C and δ18O of otoliths of four freshwater fish species (Astronotus ocellatus, Serrasalmus brandtii, Plagioscion squamosissimus, and Cichla ocellaris) from the Moxotó Reservoir in the São Francisco River, Brazil. The enriched δ13C signatures that distinguish A. ocellatus from other species could be caused by dissolved inorganic carbon (δ13CDIC) in reservoir waters. Macrophytes growing along the reservoir margins would favor photosynthetic uptake of 12C, leading to enriched δ13CDIC incorporated into the otoliths of those fish. Otolith δ18O signatures appear to reflect water column preferences, in which species preferentially inhabiting surface waters (such as S. Brandtii) show more enriched values (due to high surface evaporation ratios), while bottom water species show depleted δ18O values. Our results represent the first investigation of the isotopic compositions of fish otoliths in freshwater environments in the São Francisco River, and shed light on the interpretation of isotopic information stored in otoliths and how they can be used to infer the ecological strategies of freshwater fish.

Abstract The aim of this study was to identify chemical markers of commercial tropical red wines with the potential to apply for the Geographical Indication-GI São Francisco Valley. Volatile organic compounds of nine different commercial red wines from the São Francisco Valley, located in the Caatinga region of Brazil, that meet the classic oenological parameters for commercialization, were extracted and separated by the HS-SPME/GC–MS technique, and identified. A total of 103 volatile compounds were identified and classified into 13 chemical groups, of which the esters and alcohols were the majority groups. Similarities were found in the composition of 27 compounds identified in all wines; however, the cultivars influenced the distinction of volatiles expressed exclusively in only one type of wine. Among these, 22 compounds were highlighted for having been identified for the first time in wines, such as 3-phenyl-undecane and 4-phenyl-decane. These exclusive compounds are possible markers which confirm the typicality of tropical red wines of this region, and can contribute to the qualitative description and enhancement of regional identity for wines from the São Francisco Valley.

Abstract Tannat is a Vitis vinifera cultivar with typically high phenolic compound contents, showing intense coloration, well-bodied, and great aging potential. However, even with this great potential, this variety is still commercially underexplored in the Sub-middle São Francisco Valley (SSFV). This work aimed to characterize the typicity of Tannat red wines from Sub-middle São Francisco Valley (SSFV), Brazil. In addition, the present work represents the first study featuring phenolic compounds quantification and antioxidant activity of Tannat in tropical climate wine-producing regions. Considering the condition of a short-applied maceration time during the winemaking, the tropical Tannat wine showed significant antioxidant activity and high phenolic contents. Trans-caftaric, malvidin-3-O-glucoside, and procyanidin B1 stood out among the phenolic compounds quantified, presenting Tannat with the potential to be an important grape variety to tropical wine-producing regions in Brazil, containing high contents of bioactive compounds. Previously results to compounds (−)-epigallocatechin gallate, procyanidin B2, quercetin-3-β-D-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-O-glucoside, chlorogenic acid, and piceatannol were not found in Tannat wines. Further studies are necessary to make the Tannat grape’s adaptation better in tropical climate conditions, including investigating the phenolic profile and antioxidant activity of Tannat red wines with longer maceration times during the winemaking.

Abstract We established the length–weight relationships (LWR) for 78 fish species from the São Francisco River basin, Brazil. Samples were originated from different scientific projects performed between 1993 and 2019. Fishing gears used were mainly gillnets and cast nets of various mesh sizes. Specimens varied from 0.6 to 128 cm (18.1 ± 11.8 cm) and from 0.01 to 26,900 g (317.9 ± 733.6 g). The allometric coefficient b varied from 2.509 to 3.494. For 66 species, the LWR parameters were completely novel and, for the other 12 species, are present for the first time for the São Francisco River basin.
