Abstract The elephant apple (Dillenia indica L.) is an underutilized fruit and a potential source of many nutrients. The variations in the mass and volume of fruits are highly dependent on their physical properties. This relation is used to design precise post-harvest machinery and analyze fruit quality. The work aims to study the physicochemical properties and predict the correlation of mass and volume with various physical properties measured by image processing techniques through single and multivariable regression models such as linear, quadratic, rational, and exponential, respectively. The total phenolic content, flavonoid, and antioxidant activity of elephant apple powder are 1.2 mg GAE/g, 353.58 mg QE/g, and 5.74 mg GAEAC/g, respectively. Among single-variable models, the length-based rational model was best suited for predicting the mass and volume of elephant apples with high R² values of 0.930 and 0.924, respectively. For mass and volume of combined physical properties, rational and exponential models showed the best fit with the R² values of 0.935 and 0.950 with RMSE values of 18.196 and 15.638. Thus, the correlation between the mass and volume of elephant apples with their physical characteristics resulted in a quicker, more accurate, and more precise grading system.

Abstract The retrocardiac space is a tricky area in the chest radiograph, where abnormal densities are frequently missed out. Lesions in this area produce late pressure symptoms compared with those in the upper mediastinum. Early detection and proper evaluation of retrocardiac opacities can help the radiologist to establish the diagnosis before clinical signs and symptoms become apparent. We present a case series of 10 patients with incidentally detected retrocardiac opacities in the frontal chest radiograph, which were further evaluated with other imaging modalities such as lateral chest radiograph, computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to establish the diagnosis. The final diagnosis included congenital conditions like esophageal duplication cyst and bronchogenic cyst; inflammatory conditions like spondylodiscitis, lung abscess, and lobar pneumonia; vascular conditions like aortic aneurysm; diaphragmatic pathologies like hiatus hernia; and rare tumors like cardiac papillary fibroelastoma, pulmonary neuroendocrine tumor, and ganglioneuroma. Cardinal signs that aid in the diagnosis of retrocardiac opacities are also discussed.

Abstract Introduction: The incidence of candidiasis can vary across various subsites within the head and neck region and is associated with various co-morbidities and risk factors. The increase in the incidence of resistant Non-albicans Candida (NAC) species among these patients and the limited number of available antifungal agents make treatment difficult. A better understanding of the subsite-specific prevalence of candidiasis and its antifungal susceptibility is crucial in enhancing effective control and treatment. Aim: To determine the subsite-specific prevalence of candidiasis among Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) patients undergoing radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on patients undergoing therapy for head and neck malignancies at the Department of Radiation Oncology, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur, Kerala, India over a four-year period (January 2019 to December 2022). A total of 276 patients aged 18 to 85 years with squamous cell carcinoma were included. Oral samples were collected from patients who developed candidiasis, and co-morbidities and risk factors were documented. Candida species were isolated and identified. Antifungal susceptibility was determined using the VITEK system, and fluconazole susceptibility was compared with the standard disc diffusion method. Data were entered into an Excel sheet and analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software. Results: Pharynx was the most frequent site of head and neck malignancy, accounting for 104 cases (37.7%), followed by the oral cavity with 83 cases (30.1%). Among patients with malignancies in the pharyngeal region, a high rate of Candida infection was observed in 42 (43.3%) out of 97 cases. Candida species isolated included C. albicans (56, 57.7%), C. tropicalis (26, 26.8%), C. krusei (8, 8.3%), C. glabrata (3, 3.1%), and C. parapsilosis (4, 4.1%). Sixty-five patients (23.5%) had diabetes, which was statistically significant (p-value <0.05). All C. albicans strains were sensitive to ...

Abstract Cystic Fibrosis is a chronic disease affecting multiple systems, including the GI tract. Clinical manifestation in patients can start as early as infancy and vary across different age groups. With the advent of new, highly effective modulators, the life expectancy of PwCF has improved significantly. Various GI aspects of CF care, such as nutrition, are linked to an overall improvement in morbidity, lung function and the quality of life of PwCF. The variable clinical presentations and management of GI diseases in pediatrics and adults with CF should be recognized. Therefore, it is necessary to ensure efficient transfer of information between pediatric and adult providers for proper continuity of management and coordination of care at the time of transition. The transition of care is a challenging process for both patients and providers and currently there are no specific tools for GI providers to help ensure a smooth transition. In this review, we aim to highlight the crucial features of GI care at the time of transition and provide a checklist that can assist in ensuring an effective transition and ease the challenges associated with it.

Abstract The present experiment was performed to analyze genetic diversity among 37 parental lines of pearl millet includes 10 maintainer and 27 restorer lines for grain yield and its attributes through Mahalanobis D² statistics. All the 37 genotypes were assigned into eight different clusters. Cluster II was the largest one composed of 12 genotypes subsequently cluster V with eight genotypes, cluster VII contains seven genotypes and cluster I had fve genotypes. Whereas, clusters III, IV and VIII were solitary. High order of genetic divergence was noticed between cluster VI and VII (109.29), followed by cluster VII and VIII (72.27), cluster III and VII (66.65). Hybridization between genotypes from divergent clusters and with the best mean performance for productivity traits could be benefcial for developing promising hybrids. The trait 1000 grain weight contributed a maximum (25.53%) towards genetic diversity followed by days to 50% fowering (19.22%), panicle girth (13.21%), panicle length (8.71%), panicle weight (7.81%) and plant height (7.36%). Hence, major emphasis could be given to these traits for a better selection of divergent genotypes.

Abstract: ... albicans and NAC species causing infections in men and women (p-value=0.390), as well ... as in those with diabetes (p-value=0.127) and hypertension ... ...

Abstract Introduction: The differences in enzymatic activity expressed by various Candida species determine their virulence and play a pivotal role in understanding the pathogenesis of candidiasis. Additionally, this knowledge aids in the development of new antifungal drugs that target these enzymes, thereby enhancing therapeutic approaches. Understanding the extracellular enzymatic activity of Candida species is crucial for the development of new anticandidial drugs targeting these enzymes. Aim: To determine the differences in enzymatic activity expressed by various Candida species isolated from patients with Head and Neck Cancer (HNC) undergoing Radiation Therapy (RT) and to correlate these differences with the severity of mucositis. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated the enzymatic activity of Candida species, including C. albicans and Non albicans Candida species (NAC), isolated from HNC patients undergoing RT at the radiation oncology department, Amala Institute of Medical Sciences, Thrissur, Kerala, India. A total of 276 patients were enrolled in the study over a four-year period (January 2019 to December 2022). Extracellular enzymatic activities such as proteinase, phospholipase, haemolysin, and esterase were detected using the plate method, as described previously. Mucositis was graded according to the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) criteria. Data were analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23.0 (IBM, Illinois, US). The Chi-square test was used to analyse the variables, and the unpaired t-test was used to compare enzymatic activity. Spearman’s rank correlation was used to identify any correlation between mucositis and extracellular enzymatic activity. Results: A total of 97 Candida strains (56 C. albicans and 41 NAC) were isolated. There was no statistically significant difference between C. albicans and NAC species causing infections in men and women (p-value=0.390), as well as in those with diabetes (p-value=0.127) and hypertension ...

Abstract Introduction: Between 2005 and 2014, the 12-month prevalence of major depressive episodes among adolescents aged 12 to 17 years increased from 8.5% to 11.3%. Adolescent-onset depression is related to increased risk for depression and suicidal attempts in adulthood. It is known that depression is an adverse effect among adults taking OAM; however, the effect of OAM on adolescents is unknown.
Aim: The aim of this study was to describe the relationship between Patient Health Questionnaire 9- Modified (PHQ9-M) scores and OAM use among adolescents.
Methods: This study included data abstracted from charts of adolescents aged 12 to 21 years who completed a Kansas Be Healthy wellness appointment at the KUSM-W Peds Clinic in 2017. Odds ratios were used to calculate the relationship between oral allergy medication and gastrointestinal medication use among adolescents and PHQ9-M scores.
Results: Of the 425 adolescent charts analyzed, 22% (n=96) had positive PHQ9-M screens (a score of 10 or greater), and 13% (n=56) reported current use of allergy medication and/or GI medications. Adolescents taking oral allergy medication were 1.77 times more likely to have a positive PHQ9-M screen than those not taking oral allergy medication. Among adolescents on allergy medication, there was no difference in PHQ9- M scores based on the drug class (1st or 2<up>nd generation antihistamine or Montelukast).
Conclusion: Healthcare providers must diligently explore OAM/GI use with adolescents during clinical encounters and discuss possible adverse effects of OAM on mood.
