The Determinants of a New Television Audience in the Chinese Professional Baseball League during the COVID-19 Pandemic

    2023  Volume 3302

Abstract: ... teams for their marketing target, to identify potential fans, and to direct their marketing resources ...

Abstract The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a dramatic increase in baseball viewership, thereby providing an opportunity to comprehensively explore the determinants of the new audience. To this end, we analyze the preferences of the Taiwanese audience in 2019 and 2020, both before and after the COVID-19 outbreak, through TV ratings based on the effect of outcome uncertainty, tournament factors, consumer availability, and game quality. The empirical findings show that the behavior of the small-scale Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) sports television viewing market differs from that of large-scale markets such as Major League Baseball. Additionally, the effect of the outcome uncertainty of the game is inconsistent before and after the COVID-19 pandemic. New audiences, unlike existing audiences, have been affected by team quality and consumer availability that are statistically significant, but tournament factors are not significant. This study provides the first empirical analysis of the factors driving TV ratings of CPBL games as well as the impact before and after the COVID-19 outbreak as a contribution to filling the gap in sports communication research. The observations can be used by strategic departments of professional teams for their marketing target, to identify potential fans, and to direct their marketing resources towards sustaining or even growing during the pandemic events.

Abstract The microwave interferometric radiometer (MIR) uses aperture synthesis technology to equate multiple small-aperture antennas into a large-aperture antenna to improve spatial resolution. At present, MIR antennas that operate at frequencies above the C-band mostly use horn antennas, waveguide slot antennas, etc., which have the disadvantages of a high profile and large mass. In this paper, a new type of miniaturized, low-profile, and lightweight K-band fan-beam microstrip grid antenna is designed for the airborne campaign of the K-band one-dimensional MIR of a Microwave Imager Combined Active and Passive (MICAP) onboard a Chinese Ocean Salinity Mission (COSM). With a limited size constraint (12.33 mm) on the antenna width, a fan-beam shape antenna pattern was achieved with a 5.34° 3-dB beamwidth in the narrow beam direction and up to a 55° 3-dB beamwidth in the fan-beam direction. A periodic structural unit is proposed in this paper to reduce the design complexity of Taylor weighting, achieving desirable performances on gain (19.1 dB) and sidelobe level (<−20 dB) in the H-plane. Four antenna elements were fabricated and arranged in a non-redundant sparse array. The performance of the four-element sparse array was evaluated with a simulation and real measurement in an anechoic chamber. The coupling between antenna elements was less than −25 dB, and the consistency of phase patterns was better than 3.4°. These results verify the feasibility of the proposed K-band microstrip grid antenna for airborne MIR applications.

Abstract The exploration of deep-water submarine fan reservoirs has become a prominent research area for hydrocarbon discovery and recovery. However, the high operational costs render efficient exploration of this type of reservoir crucial, and the pivotal foundation lies in studying reservoir architectures. A case study of deep-water submarine fans in the Albacora Leste oilfield in Brazil is presented along with a characterization of the underground reservoir architecture based on well-log and seismic model fitting. A sedimentary microfacies distribution model is systematically established for each reservoir based on a detailed stratigraphic framework with a well-seismic joint characterization method and various types of data (e.g., geological, well-log, and seismic data). The results are as follows: the sedimentary microfacies of the deep-water submarine fans in the study area can be subdivided into tongue-shaped-lobe, muddy-channel, sandy-channel, and contourite deposits. Owing to data abundance and quality constraints, the architecture of the target layer in the study area was characterized based on Level 4 architectural elements. The AB120 Reservoir consisted of three complex channels (I, II, and III) and two tongue-shaped complex lobes (I and II). Complex channels I and III were the first and last to be deposited, respectively, and complex lobe I was deposited earlier than complex lobe II. Complex channels II and III supply complex lobes I and II, respectively. Vertically, complex lobe II was composed of three single lobes formed at different stages, the youngest of which was distributed over the largest area. Complex lobe II has already been drilled and is currently under development. However, complex lobe I has not yet been developed. This study has great practical significance for the effective development of deep-water submarine-fan reservoirs in this area and is of considerable theoretical significance for the advancement of deep-water sedimentology.

Abstract: ... preoperative fan-beam (FB) CT versus the classic intraoperative cone-beam (CB) CT in patients undergoing ...

Abstract Objective: This prospective randomized study aimed to investigate the accuracy, radiation exposure, and surgical workflow optimization of a novel intraoperative spinal navigation system using preoperative fan-beam (FB) CT versus the classic intraoperative cone-beam (CB) CT in patients undergoing minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF).
Methods: In this two-arm, single-center, randomized study, the authors evaluated the safety and clinical outcomes of a novel navigation system for pedicle screw placement in spine surgery.
Results: The accuracy of pedicle screw placement in the experimental group (FB group) was 94.38%, while it was 94.55% in the control group (CB group). Notably, the intraoperative radiation exposure to patients in the FB CT group (mean 0.361 ± 0.261 mSv) was significantly lower than that in the CB CT group (mean 6.526 ± 13.591 mSv) (p < 0.0001). Furthermore, the intraoperative preparation time for screw placement in the FB group (mean 10.6 ± 5.62 minutes) was significantly lower than that in the CB group (mean 17.6 ± 5.59 minutes) (p = 0.0004). No significant differences were observed for blood loss during surgery, total radiation exposure to surgeons, mean time for inserting a single pedicle screw, revision surgery rate, patients' reported outcomes, and length of postoperative hospital stay between the two groups. Significant differences were observed for intraoperative radiation exposure to patients and the preparation time for pedicle screw placement.
Conclusions: The preoperative FB CT-based intraoperative spinal navigation system demonstrated comparable accuracy and safety when compared with the intraoperative CB CT-based system. Moreover, the FB CT-based system had a shorter time for screw placement and reduced intraoperative radiation exposure to patients. These findings support the potential benefits of adopting this novel navigation system to enhance surgical precision and reduce radiation-related risks in MIS-TLIF procedures.

Abstract Context: The use of a handheld or electric fan has been proposed as one component of the complex clinical interventions used in the relief of dyspnea; however, there is a lack of consensus regarding its efficacy.
Objectives: We performed a systematic review to determine the effectiveness of fan therapy for the treatment of dyspnea.
Methods: We searched the Medline, EMBASE, Web of Science, Scopus, CINAHL, PsycInfo, and Cochrane Library databases to identify all fan therapy studies published from January 1, 1946 to September 31, 2018. The search terms included "dyspnea," "dysponea," "dyspneic," "short of breath," "shortness of breath," "breathless," "breathlessness," "breathing difficulty," "labored breathing," and "fan." Searches were limited to articles in English or Chinese. The bibliographies of identified articles were also manually searched. Three authors independently assessed papers for inclusion.
Results: Ten of the 92 unique records identified met the inclusion criteria (nine randomized controlled trials and one cohort study). Most studies (80%) were conducted in the hospital setting, and none were double blinded. Nearly half (159 [46%]) of the 344 total subjects had cancer. The most common nonmalignant disease was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The most common duration of fan therapy was five minutes. Six studies (60%) reported a significant improvement in dyspnea with fan therapy. There are two ongoing trials being conducted based on a search of trial registries.
Conclusion: Limited direct evidence from randomized controlled trials indicates that fan therapy may effectively alleviate dyspnea. Additional trials are warranted to confirm this finding and explore the use of fan therapy for the treatment of dyspnea in more diverse populations and settings.

Abstract The stall in an axial fan is directly related to detrimental phenomena such as performance degradation, vibration, noise, and flow instability at low flow rates. As a kind of passive control method to handle the stall, two-dimensional plates so-named anti-stall fin (ASF) were suggested by ourselves and were attached inside the casing. In this study, the ASF's effect on the internal flow pattern was visually investigated in the flow passage, and its tendency was discussed with the performance curve. Subsequently, the ASF's functional limitations for various design parameters, which the ASF can derive aerodynamically, were presented as the primary focus of this study. Each one-factor analysis was performed, and the internal flow pattern was observed in parallel at the point where the ASF lost its function. For the radial length, axial length, number of fins, and positive-tangential angle, the ASF almost retained its function up to the limitation to prevent instability but radically lost its function at a certain flow rate. For the axial gap and negative-tangential angle, the ASF gradually lost its function. Mostly, this study was based on numerical analysis, and the performance was validated through experimental tests.

Abstract Little is known about the psychology behind fans joining fan community pages in a blog context; the factors driving them to like, share, and comment on posts on fan community pages; or the manner in which fans experience and interact with such pages. These topics were not given sufficient explanation in past research. This study aimed to explore the special situations and unique online experiences that fans community experience in a blog context. A netnography analysis was conducted through online interviews and field observations. Three phases of contextual experiences were determined, including observing and collecting data online, active participation, and emergent design. The contribution of this study is its establishment of the fan community experience model, which is a substantive theory, and its suggestion of nine propositions that can provide insights into fan community page interaction and experience models.

Abstract A numerical optimization is presented to reduce the vibrational noise of a centrifugal fan volute. Minimal vibrational radiated sound power was considered as the aim of the optimization. Three separate parts of volute panel thickness (ST: the side panel thickness; BT: the back panel thickness; FT: the front panel thickness) were taken as the design variables. Then, a vibrational noise optimization control method for the volute casing was proposed that considered the influence of vibroacoustic coupling. The optimization method was mainly divided into three main parts. The first was based on the simulation of unsteady flow to the fan to obtain the vibrational noise source. The second used the design of experiments (DoE) method and a weighted-average surrogate model (radial basis function, or RBF) with three design variables related to the geometries of the three-part volute panel thickness, which was used to provide the basic mathematical model for the optimization of the next part. The third part, implementing the low vibrational noise optimization for the fan volute, applied single-objective (taking volute radiated acoustical power as the objective function) and multi-objective (taking the volute radiated acoustical power and volute total mass as the objective function) methods. In addition, the fan aerodynamic performance, volute casing surface fluctuations, and vibration response were validated by experiments, showing good agreement. The optimization results showed that the vibrational noise optimization method proposed in this study can effectively reduce the vibration noise of the fan, obtaining a maximum value of noise reduction of 7.3 dB. The optimization in this study provides an important technical reference for the design of low vibroacoustic volute centrifugal compressors and fans whose fluids should be strictly kept in the system without any leakage.
